One thing that I get asked about often (as do many other YouTubers) is my filming setup. “What camera do you film with?” or “What type of lighting do use?” and “How do you edit your videos?” etc… These are questions that I also had when I first started, so I figured it would be beneficial to answer all of those questions for you. There are tons and TONS of information out there regarding this topic, but I’ll let you know what works best for me and you can take it from there. I’ll provide you with links, prices, and photos just to make it a little easier! This segment will be split into three different posts: Lighting, Camera, and Software. If you want to start a channel, improve the channel you already have, or even if you’re just interested in how all of this works…then continue reading below!

LIGHTING
So let’s start off with the most important thing, in my opinion, and that is lighting! We’re not trying to create a multi-million dollar production, so we’ll just start off with some budget friendly options. And, I know you’re not going to believe me, but the easiest option is actually free…yes, FREE! Filming using natural lighting. This is the best option because it is readily available and doesn’t require any skill set to setup. If you can find a window that produces enough light, then you can easily set up your filming area there (if space permits). You want to make sure that you are facing the window but leave enough space to put your camera, desk, etc., in between you and the window. Pretty self-explanatory, right? However, there is one con when dealing with natural lighting. Your filming will be based on the time of the day (morning vs. evening) and the weather (i.e. gloomy, cloudy days are not ideal). My filming area has no windows, so I use studio lights, which we will discuss next.
When I film my videos, I use four lights. I am no lighting expert by any means, but I found that these options work for me, while also being budget friendly, which is a major plus! All links, pricing, and information are below.
Utilitech 4-pack 75W Equivalent Daylight CFL Bulb ($12.98)
Neewer 5500K 10-Inch Ring Light ($86.26)
ePhoto Premium Softbox Lighting Kit with Stand and Muslin ($179.99)
The first is the ceiling light. I replaced the original yellow bulbs and added daylight bulbs for extra brightness. This serves as my overhead lighting. I use the Neewer ring light in front of me (approximately two or three feet away). This light focuses on my face and is great for makeup tutorials and close ups. There are larger sizes of the ring light available as well. If you’ll be filming with another person, then the 18-inch ring light may work better (linked here). I then position my camera directly behind the ring light, as shown in the photos. The last two lights I use are part of a kit. They are softbox lights with the shades removed, bulbs exposed. I position one on the right wall, one on the left wall, with one slightly higher than the other one.
Lighting is extremely important because without it, the quality of your videos can look very low. You don’t even have to spend tons of money on a camera. With a cheaper camera and great lighting, you can make better quality videos versus having a top-of-the-line camera with bad lighting. Which moves us into our next topic…cameras. You can continue with part 2 by clicking here.
HOW I FILM YOUTUBE VIDEOSPART 1-LIGHTING One thing that I get asked about often (as do many other YouTubers) is my filming setup.
This post is a continuation of a 3-part segment where I discuss how I film my YouTube videos. It will focus on lighting, camera, and software. Click the links below to be redirected to the other 2 parts of this segment.
Click here for Part 1 – Lighting
Click here for Part 3 – Software
This post will focus on cameras and accessories. Although quality is important when choosing a camera, you do not need to break the bank to record a great video! To continue reading more on this topic, click below.
CAMERAS
I film all of my videos with a DSLR camera. The Canon Rebel T3i. This model is currently discontinued. You can check out camera specs and pricing for the updated Canon T6i here. It has treated me great for the past 3-4 years! Although the quality is not the most up-to-date (compared to the popular Canon 70D/80D), my lighting helps to increase the quality of my videos. I shoot with two lenses…the standard 18-55mm kit lens for standard shooting and the 50mm for beauty videos (ie. makeup tutorials).
Now I won’t get into the ins and outs of how the camera operates, but one thing that I have learned is that it’s better to have a camera with manual controls/options versus having one that is automatic. With manual controls, you can adjust the darkness/brightness of your video along with other things. Automatic settings sometimes will not allow you to get the proper shot that you need simply because you cannot control the levels of certain settings.
So, are you required to own a DSLR in order to film videos? Definitely not! With the advancement of technology, many people are now recording their videos through their mobile devices. The quality is so amazing that you can barely notice the difference. If you don’t have the money to shell out for a DSLR or other type of camera, then don’t worry! These devices have amazing built-in cameras. For the sake of this post, I’ll mention the iPhone 6S Plus (because that’s the one that I own). The rear camera records at 720p, 1080p, and 4K! I mentioned the rear camera only because that’s the lens you should use when recording. Although it’s tempting to use the front camera (due to the fact that you can view yourself), the quality that the front camera records in is just not that great. Some options to work around that may be to position a mirror behind your phone so that you can see if you’re in frame or not. This leads me to my next topic…an LCD swivel/tilt screen.
If you are financially able to purchase a DSLR or any other type of camera for filming, then I recommend purchasing one with an LCD screen that can swivel/tilt. It’s the small screen that swings out from the camera. It can be positioned to be facing you while you are filming so that you can check the frame and focus. A super convenient option that makes a world of difference! If you want to be fancy, you can also hook up your camera to an external screen/monitor which works in the same way as a viewfinder, but allows you to see yourself in a larger screen.
There are some camera accessories that will also add to the “watchability” of your video. Some accessories that may be beneficial (but not necessary) to add with your camera are a tripod and microphone. The tripod not only holds the camera steadily, but it allows you to angle the camera in a position that is best suitable for the shots that you need. You can raise or lower the tripod according to the height of the subject you’re recording. Next is the microphone. This has to be one of my most favorite purchases out of all the accessories I own. You wouldn’t think that this little item would have such a dramatic effect on the overall quality of a video, but it does. It limits the amount of echo and background noises, and it also allows the speaker to be heard clearer. If I were to recommend anything, I would definitely say to get one of these!
Here are the links to the tripod and mic that I use, but you can search Amazon, along with other sites, to find one that better suits your needs.
Dynex 58″ Tripod ($19.99)
Movo LV10 Clip On Microphone ($29.95)
There are affordable options when choosing to film. You just have to look at your situation and adjust accordingly. So now that you have your lighting and your camera, you’re ready to start filming! But once your video filmed, how will you edit it? What software will you use? We’ll answer these questions in part three.
HOW I FILM YOUTUBE VIDEOSPART 2-CAMERA This post is a continuation of a 3-part segment where I discuss how I film my YouTube videos.
HOW I FILM YOUTUBE VIDEOSPART 3-EDITING
HOW I FILM YOUTUBE VIDEOSPART 3-EDITING
Pick filming location ✔︎ Setup lighting ✔︎ Film video ✔︎ Edit video ??? Now we get to the part that many dread…editing your video. After all, you can’t keep the clips of you sneezing, dropping the product, and stuttering over your words, right? This is where editing comes in. You’re going to cut all of the bloopers and extras to make a well put together video. You may even add in some extra…

With 2017 rapidly knocking at our door, it’s time to list my all-time favorite beauty products of 2016! These products stayed in heavy rotation throughout the year and maintained their status as holy grail (HG). Find out what products made the cut and why by clicking the link below…
FACE PRIMER
Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector ($40.00) THIS primer is everything and more! My skin has changed ALOT over this past year. It started off as being really dry and dehydrated. I started massaging coconut oil on my face nightly for a few months which helped restore moisture and return my face back to normal. With that “normal-ness” came a little oiliness on my nose and chin area. I noticed that it would interfere with my foundation so I was on the hunt to find something to combat that. I came across this after reading countless blog posts and watching many rave about it on YouTube. I gave it a shot, and I’m so glad I did! After a whole day of wear, my foundation looks like I just put it on! I use this primer in conjunction with the primer below for awesome results!
Too Faced Primed & Poreless Skin Smoothing Face Primer ($30.00) I used this primer for a totally different reason than the one above, but when they’re used together, it’s MAGIC for my face. This primer smooths my face by filling in the small pores that I have on my cheeks and around the edges of my nose. I also add a tiny bit on my forehead and temples. It makes my foundation look so smooth and flawless. I’ve seen such better results with my foundation by making sure the skin underneath my foundation is taken care of before the foundation application. It also saves on the amount of foundation I use. The great thing about this primer is that I can wear it alone. It has a slight tint to it that doesn’t allow it to look ashy on the skin, which I love! Most days, I’ll do my eyebrows, throw on some mascara, and even distribute this primer on my face for a quick natural look!
FOUNDATION
NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer ($44.00) I have always been into tinted moisturizers, but have never found any that have given me the coverage I want along with the weightless feel…until I discovered this! For one, the color match is spot on. No mixing or altering with a powder is needed for this to match my skin tone. It has a weightless feel, which also giving you a great amount of coverage (while still looking skin-like). It applies and blends beautifully and only a tiny amount of product is needed for a full face application. This foundation stays with me…either on my vanity or I throw it in my bag when I’m traveling. It’s THAT good! With this, I honestly feel like I’ll never need nor want another foundation. Everything else I have tried thus-far doesn’t compare.
CONCEALER
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($29.00) To be honest, NARS is hands down my favorite makeup brand. Everything I have tried from them has been a hit, included the Radiant Creamy Concealer. It lives up to it’s name. It gives your skin a radiant look, it’s creamy, and blends amazing. I’ve set it with numerous powders and I’ve had no issues with creasing. Not much to say about this one except that YOU NEED TO TRY IT!
MASCARA
Covergirl Queen False Lash Drama ($4.39) Mascara is one product that I don’t splurge on due to it’s shelf life. Some mascaras dry out after 3 months or so (once you open the packaging) so it doesn’t make much sense to spend $20-30 on a mascara when you’ll end up throwing it away. I received this mascara as a freebie when I worked with Covergirl during Essence Fest this year and it has become my favorite. I picked it up more than my L’Oreal Telescopic and those that know me know how much I loved that one! The False Lash Drama does a great job at lengthening AND volumizing. My Telescopic only worked well for lengthening. I would then have to top it with another mascara to get the fullness in my lashes. However, False Lash Drama does both and is almost $5.00 cheaper! Who wouldn’t love that!
LIP PRODUCTS
Buxom True Nude Lip Foundation (Revealed) ($19.00) I’ve raved about this lippie previously, but to recap…it’s the perfect warm reddish-brown color. It literally lasts over 8 hours with minimal touchups, even while I was eating. Now, of course the greasier foods will remove any lip product, but this lipstick still gave the grease a run for its money! I will continue to purchase as long as they continue to make it. The only downside is that the tip is very fragile so I only twist it out slightly above the base and then apply.
Jordana Easyliner Retractable Pencil (Coco Loco) ($2.99) I use this lipliner with a multitude of lip colors. From browns to nudes to burgundy to reds! It blends amazing and is super affordable. I keep one on my vanity, one in my purse, and a few in my kit. It looks amazing on women of color and is so pigmented that it’ll show up on the darkest of skin tones, which is why it’s great to add to your kit!
BROW PRODUCTS
NYX Eyebrow Gel ($6.99) Let me start by saying that I consider myself an eyebrow connoisseur. I have tried sooooo many pencils, gels, waxes, powders, pomades, etc! This eyebrow gel has to be the BEST brow product EVER! Especially at this price point. Now you may argue with me that there are better products, but ask yourself this…is that product $6.99 or under? Exactly! I can literally go through my whole day of work, come home, workout, cook dinner, clean up, and jump in the shower with my brows still in tact! I don’t think I’ll ever give my heart to another brow product like I did this one. Thank you NYX, thank you.
L’Oreal Brow Stylist Definer ($7.99) Yes, I love MAC’s Spiked brow pencil as well as Anastasia’s Brow Wiz, but those pencils range from $17-23. To get straight to the point, this Brow Stylish Pencil does the same exact thing and has extremely similar packaging all for $7.99. And in all honestly, it seems to last a little bit longer than the others. The only downside? There are only three colors available in this product range so if you can find your color, then awesome! You’re a part of the lucky few…lol.
BLUSH
MAC Melba ($23.00) A gorgeous matte, peachy-coral blush that is perfect for everyday wear, as many would agree. I heard many people rave about it but once I went in the store I was in shock at how light it looked in the pan. I swatched it and took a chance and purchased it (knowing that I would probably be returning it). However, it’s something about adding this blush to the cheek that changes the color of it. I still haven’t quite figured it out. It looks totally different on the cheeks than it does when you look at it or swatch it! I just don’t get it. But it is one of my all time favorites and I find myself reaching for it whenever I want to wear blush.
APPLICATOR
Beauty Blender Sponge ($20.00) Not much to say about this one that hasn’t already been said. It’s the OG of blending applicators. Many have tried to dupe it but have failed…miserably (lol). It’s still #1 in my book! They come in various colors and sizes now, but I’ve been riding with these pink ones for a while now. I think this product deserves the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT OF MAKEUP AWARD in my book!
BEST OF BEAUTY 2016 With 2017 rapidly knocking at our door, it's time to list my all-time favorite beauty products of 2016!
I am still waiting on ipsy to blow me away with a bag like they did in October! If you need a refresher on what was in my bag that month, then click HERE. That was, in my opinion, the BEST one that I have received as of yet. The December bag didn’t wow me as much, but is still okay. I expected more glitz and glam for the New Year, but was very underwhelmed. As always, if you’re interested in getting more information or signing up for ipsy, then click on the following referral link: http://bit.ly/2cVbToP . Continue reading below to see what I received this month!
Marc Anthony Strictly Curls Curl Envy Perfect Curl Cream ($5.99)
Smashbox Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer ($24.00)
City Color Be Matte Blush Palette (not available)
NYX Prismatic Shadow in Jaded ($6.00) *
REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask ($55.00)
Prices shown are for full sized products. Items marked with an (*) are full-sized.
Now, don’t get me wrong. The products included in this month’s bag were not bad at all! I just had high expectations for the bag because of the holidays. I expected more festive items, such as a glitter, lipstick, and maybe even a bold liner that would be great for using for New Year’s Eve festivities. So with my expectations set that high, I was disappointed when I opened up the bag. But overall, there were items included for hair, face, cheeks, eyes, and lips, so there were a vast array of items to try out! So I guess I won’t be too hard on ipsy this month, haha! Don’t forget to head over to this link http://bit.ly/2cVbTo to sign up and get your own ipsy bag delivered directly to you monthly!

IPSY NOVEMBER 2016
It’s an ipsy unbagging again! I know, I know…this post is late, BUT I decided to go ahead and show you all what I received in the month of October. Why? Because this has to be my most favorite bag out of them all, by far! The theme for the October bag is black magic. The bag (a custom design by Valfré) is pink and black with halloween artwork and the zipper is a cute little black ghost. As always, if you’re interested in getting more information or signing up for ipsy, then click on the following referral link: http://bit.ly/2cVbToP . Continue reading below to see the goodies I received!
Below I’ve listed the products I’ve received along with prices and links of the full-sized products FYI! In the gallery, you can find photos of the products, along with swatches of a few of the items.
MeMeMe Blush Brush (link not available)
indi Beauty Buttercream Antioxidant Lip Scrub ($21.99)
NYX Vivid Brights Liquid Liner in Vivid Gunmetal ($7.00)
Teeez Cosmetics Eve’s Ready to Wear Lipstick in Romantic Red ($22.00)
Makeup Forever Ultra HD Foundation in 173=Y445 ($43.00)
Overall, I felt like this was the most cohesive bag that ipsy has ever put out. I am in love with the fact that they included a foundation sample (which was color matched perfectly, by the way). In all honesty, some of the products that I get are just thrown in a drawer with the hopes that they’ll be sampled one day. But not these! I can actually see these items being thrown into my beauty rotation.
The staff at ipsy have a lot to live up to now. Hopefully my November bag is just as great because I’m super excited to see what they have in store! Unfortunately, it’s too late to get your hands on the October bag, but if you head over to this link http://bit.ly/2cVbTo and sign up, you can be in the running to get your November bag delivered to your doorstep!
