Nobody will ever make me feel as bad about myself than my parents do.
Resident Evil (1996) vs. Resident Evil Remastered (2015)
Male protagonist to female character: I don't even know why I'm telling you all this personal information, I just met you
Me: You've been socialized to view women as receptacles for your emotions and she can't tell you to fuck off because she's at work and doesn't wanna get fired, next question
I feel like me and my girlfriend are slowly losing each other. It’s like dying inside.
What We Do In The Shadows
What We Do In The Shadows is a mockumentary style comedy in the vain of The Office. It follows a group of vampires as they share a flat together and try to integrate themselves into modern society and culture.
The style of comedy is definitely cringe humor. The cast nails this with many uncomfortable pauses and lines that are so forced and often go nowhere. This works to the films advantage as everybody plays it straight. This style is why I described it as being similar to the office.
I loved the little world building that was in the film. With the masquerade at the end and often a history of the vampires in that universe. There are also plenty of little nods to other vampire lore with Petyr clearly being a nod to Nosferatu and one of the flatmates being Vlad the Impaler.
There are also plenty of gory moments which may leave viewers a bit squirmish but again most of it just played for laughs. Especially when the werewolfs attack.
If the premise alone excites you then I would give this a watch. It’s not too long and it’s available on Netflix so if cringe humor and twilight bashing is your kind of thing then strap yourselves in.

Will be writing my review on Turbo kid when I get back from work. Unfortunately don't have time to write it up beforehand as I have been called in an hour early.
10 Frames
Collateral (2004) Directed by Michael Mann
Maleficent (minor plot spoilers)
So as one of the many people who are sick of Disney remaking their classics I was not really expecting anything good from this movie. Hearing that it was a retelling from Mal’s (yes I will call her that from now on for the sake of not having to type her name out every time) I was intrigued but still thought it would be crudely crammed in with the original story.
So I was shocked to discover that actually there’s a really well written movie on display here. I thought the re framing of the story was fantastic. With a clever way to re - do Mal’s motivations.
I would argue that the film as a whole is rather by the numbers in terms of of a family action adventure in the fantasy genre. With some “epic” battle scenes with no weight to them due to the over reliance on cgi and some frankly painfully bad attempts at comedy.
I would have preffered a lot more practical effects to add a bit more depth to the environments but after a while I did start to get used to as I did find the art design rather brilliant. Especially the night time scenes in the fairyland which were so enchanting that It brought back memories of walking through disneyland as a child in the night with everything lit up with vibrant colours.
One of my biggest gripes with classic Disney is their rather infantile view on love and the female princess as a reward for the prince. I thought the film was going in that direction and it actually looked like it was going to be even worse than the original but thankfully they changed it up and the princess trope is less offensive because of it.
Despite some of the positives iv said about the writing there are a few inconsistencies and conveniences just for the sake of keeping the plot moving which again detract from the film making it an almost paint by numbers adventure film.
Also the film shoots itself in the foot right at the beginning due to an awful performance by the girl playing a young Mal. I always say this but it needs to be said again. Why can’t Hollywood use good child actors? They’re meant to have talent and be characters not props.
However what really makes this film better than the sum of its parts is the performance of Angelina Jolie. My god she just owned this role through and through! I was startled by how witty and creepy she was and she made the film a must watch for any disney fan.
Also the powerful imagery of her wings being clipped after she was drugged by someone she loved didn’t go unnoticed. Disney took a bold step adding these rape metaphors and im so glad that they weren’t removed.
You also can’t ignore the fact that Jolie would have known about her high chance of breast cancer at the time. Which must have made the wing clipping scene that much more personal. This brings a new level of pain and suffering to the character that just completely knocks the original out of the park.
This film brought me back to my childhood in ways I didn’t think it could. It surprised me and shocked me. All of this on top of Jolies performance elevates this movie to new grounds. If you have ignored it like I did for being a remake of classic Disney then give it a go. It may just surprise you too.
