Regardless of how Aerys acted around both Elia and Rhaenys, and no doubt little Aegon in the future, Rhaella didn’t care. They were her family, and she never shared her brother’s racist views. Perhaps, it was her very own act of defiance and rebellion to come see them. If she only knew where her eldest son were after all the rumours she heard following the latest tourney, one she had to miss for she wasn’t allowed to attend.
“ Rhaegar shall be home soon, of that I have no doubt. ” She smiled kindly at Elia, as she believed the words she spoke. “ Aegon may resemble his father, and I pray inside he is like his mother. ” By the Gods let the child grow and not become obsessed with prophecies like his father.
Elia was glad that her mother-in-law was there to support her. She and Elia were different as night and day, but she knew that she could trust the older woman with her secrets and anxieties. She had lived with the king for many years. She knew how he was better than anyone else at court and Elia knew that she didn’t support her brother’s treatment of herself and Rhaenys. At the end of the day, one’s blood didn’t matter so much as one’s character.
“If the gods will, I hope he will be a good and just king,” Elia said as she looked down at her violet eyed son. The hopes of so many were tied up in that small body. He was his father’s heir and would become king someday. An awesome destiny, but one which Elia also dreaded.
“But I’m no seer,” she said pushing the thought away. “My only wish for him and his sister is that they have the happiness I lack.”
