In Shinki’s defense they don’t have to rake leaves in Suna
Little Shinki's sleeping on the sofa in the Kazekage's office while Gaara works through a busy afternoon. A calm silence fills the room, right up until the office door bursts open as someone enters and exclaims, "Gaara!"— it's Baki, who looks in a hurry. But before anyone can even react, waves of iron sand are swirling furiously through the room ready to attack.
Gaara sighs, dissapointed that his son's nap has been interrupted. He gets up to calm Shinki, whose little heart is racing with alarm. Meanwhile, Baki explains that the council has called a last-minute meeting about an urgent matter.
"I should go, then" Gaara says. He turns to his now-settled son. "Baki-sensei will stay with you for a while, alright?"
Baki stiffens. "Gaara, I'm on the council too. I need to be there."
Gaara looks at him with steady eyes. "Well," he begins, "it wouldn't be an issue if Shinki were still sleeping. But now that you startled him awake, someone has to stay with him while I'm gone."
He pauses to put in his Kazekage cloak.
"Fortunately for us, you volunteered your presence."
Baki starts to sweat, he's never been good with kids. Gaara gives him a half-smile. "It won't be long," he adds gently, "I'll let the council know you were held up by something important."
As he closes the door, Baki looks down at Shinki, who's staring back with big, unamused eyes. He kind of reminds him of Gaara as a kid, just less terrifying. Baki figures he should be thankful he won't have to deal with him the same way he did with Gaara.
new son
After adopting Shinki, Gaara starts visiting the orphanage more often because he does not want those kids to ever feel lonely. Not like Shinki did, not like he once did.
He brings them sweets, he reads them stories, sometimes the kids like to play with him and his sand (he feels a lump forming in his throat, the sand kids once used to fear, is now bringing them joy) He tries not to indulge them too much, after all, he doesn’t want to spoil them and make things hard for their future parents.
One day, Shinki decides to go with him. The kids ask him a bunch of questions, "what does it feel like to be the Kazekage’s son?", "how did you get adopted?", "how should I act if someone's interested in adopting me?". Shinki struggles to respond, had he never been to an orphanage before, he's unaware of the formal adoption process. Benefits of getting adopted by the Kazekage. Still, he tries to encourage them. He's not good with words like his father, but he talks from his heart, telling his own story, how his father changed his life for the better and that he’s grateful for his love and support. The kids seems happy with it. Gaara's crying in a corner.
With each passing day, Kankuro grows more and more worried. He realizes Gaara is getting a little too attached to these kids, just like it happened with Shinki. He fears one day he'll come back home to a house full of kids.
Kankuro: Gaara you know you can't adopt all of them, right, you know, right
Gaara: why not
Kankuro: Gaara you can't
Gaara: imagine how happy the council would be with so many heirs for the position of Kazekage
Kankuro: Gaara we both know it doesn't work like that
Gaara: Shinki would love to have siblings
Shinki: ??? not really
Ryū's character was actually very entertaining, I liked his personality and ofc I'm fond of him because he's Shinki's clone. But it's a shame they used him (and Yodo) only to awake Sarada's sharingan instead of using him to deepen on Shinki's character and his relationship with his friends and family. Like, yay for Sarada but boo for Suna characters y'know, bc apparently other villages are not important anymore.
I still have hope we'll see more of them in the future because I'm in denial, I mean we had a whole flashback with Shinki and Araya talking about Yodo and Gaara, and while that flashback was mostly to show that Shinki gave Araya a sword to counter his Iron Sand, I still think it was deeper than that. Idk I just think that introducing a new love triangle, having one of the characters die by the hands of the one she loves, and then not acknowledge the reaction of any of them feels odd.
Also, I never cared too much for Yodo but I feel so sad for her. The fact that Shinjus react to very strong feelings (like Matsuri with Konohamaru) yet Ryū didn't even hesitate to kill her... like my girl had no chances... no chance of wining the battle nor in love. She did not deserve that at all

thinking ab Shinki in his academy days making those classic butter & sugar cookies for Father's Day. He gives them to Gaara, and Gaara tears up, not just bc it's his first Father's Day but also bc he hates sugar but ends up eating the whole bag anyway bc he doesn't want to hurt Shinki's little heart. Shinki, thinking his dad loves the cookies, starts making them regularly and now Gaara's stuck dealing with the consequences of not knowing how to say no to his kid
Sasuke and Gaara being love with Naruto but instead of fighting for him they make out in front of him to lure him in
