Dampness. Each pawstep squelches against ancient moss as shadows gather around a pool. The cats come from separate tunnels, and each tunnel flanks at least two others. In this infinite maze- this is the center. A peek into something beyond them.
Or, perhaps, closer than most realize.
“One of us must go,” the first voice whispers. A shadowy paw touches the water, just barely skidding the surface. All of them shudder at once. “And soon. The rain is getting stronger.”
The second snorts, sitting on back paws. They hold themselves at an odd angle. “Can’t be me. It’ll be obvious.”
"Some of us are buried deeper than others,” the third hisses, hollow eyes flashing.
“So what? It’s not like we can suffocate.”
“Fighting against the flow is just so… you.”
“Shaddup.”
“My bones are quite a state,” a fourth interjects. “Arthritis and all. I’m not sure I could get very far.”
“We don’t have to go far,” insists the first. “We just need to get the message across.”
“Then why not you?”
They hesitated. “We all know they’ll be able to tell. They won’t listen to me.”
“Stars on a stick, you’re a bunch of cowards,” the fifth sighed. “Talk big game for cats who refuse to get the job done.”
“So you’ll go?”
“As if anyone else would?”
The first reached out to groom between the fifth’s ears. “Be careful. Please.”
They inched away. “Oh, please. Like I’ll be in danger. This’ll be….” They paused, ears pricking. Their voice pitched into a whisper. “They’ve found us.”
The shadows dispersed almost immediately, diving into different tunnels than the ones they first appeared from. Tiny pitter-pattering steps followed them into the gloom.
