https://ift.tt/PrWYGEA A client changed scope 12 times. Our margin disappeared. This was supposed to be a $10k IoT-based smart aquaculture platform. The idea was for farmers to monitor water quality, track fish growth, and control aeration pumps from a single dashboard. It was challenging, but exciting ... Then the scope changes began: - “Can we add a real-time weather integration?” - “Oh wait, investors want blockchain-based traceability for the supply chain.” - “Actually, let’s redo the calculations from scratch.” Twelve changes later... The $10k project had grown to $20k in development work. Deadlines slipped by months & Our Dev team was exhausted. And don't get me started on the margin. Here’s what we learned the hard way: 1. Scope Change Clause → Every new feature means a new timeline and new cost. 2. Roadmap = Contract → No feature, no matter how appealing, gets added without re-negotiation. 3. Educate clients early → Flexibility might feel good in the moment, but it hurts products long-term. Now, every engagement at Kinetik Dynamics starts with our Scope Shield Agreement. It protects clients from endless delays. It protects us from losing margins. I’ve turned this into a straightforward Scope Shield Template you can use in your next contract. Comment “scope” and I’ll send it to you. Uploaded by Kinetik Dynamics September 27, 2025 at 08:30PM
