“You’d think, after all the time I’ve spent here I’d have figured my way around finally. But alas.” Olive frowned. “I’m lost…Can you perhaps point me in the direction of the beach?”

“You’d think, after all the time I’ve spent here I’d have figured my way around finally. But alas.” Olive frowned. “I’m lost…Can you perhaps point me in the direction of the beach?”

Elias looked up from his building plan, “Oh... Well I’ve only visited it once myself but as far as I know it is south of the main square Olive, keep following that road at it should take you right up to the tide.”

“And since when does keeping me safe involve me having to tell you everything that may be bothering me?  You kept me out of your life for years, and I keep one secret and you shut down entirely on me?

Elias flinched slightly before speaking, “I am the elder Anders, it is my prerogative to know what is going on in your life. I am supposed to worry for you. You and Olive are not to worry about me.” he explained, “And you have seemed most... different of late. So this matter strikes me as important.”

[kingelias]

“Trust me. It’s mostly fake. Which is the best kind of confidence if you ask me. Although sometimes it’s real.” Noelani laughed. “I’m not actually sure how to describe what I mean by that wither.” Another laugh. “Of course I am! It’s ice cream…and I’m not going to be the lame friend who watches you eat.”

“Why would fake confidence be the best?” he asked, “Surely it’s one of the latter varieties.” After a moment he shrugged, maybe he’d understand one day, “Well in that case drive on.” he said, settling himself into the car, waiting for the other to get in, “I would not mind. People always watched eat as a child, incase something was wrong with the food or if I started choking. I may not enjoy it but I am very used to being observed.”

At his confession, Navi could have just about died from laughter. She did her best to hold it in, only because she knew her friend was just about mortified at the thought, but had she been able to do so, she would have rolled on the floor laughing. As it was, she was snorting in a most unladylike fashion, trying her best not to actually laugh. “Well, nonetheless. She has a handsome husband. That is enough, no?” she asked, trying to warm him up a little–and trying not to giggle at the number of warm- and cold-related jokes she’d come up with in that conversation alone.

Elias glanced away slightly, not entirely sure how one could even begin discussing such things, despite his suspicious that Navi was something of an expert within the subject. “I would like to think she saw more in me than that, though truth be told I cannot say what she see’s.” he added quietly, “She is such a kind woman, and so strong. She burns like fire.” he said, turning back and offering Navi a small smile. He had often noticed that on the rare occasions the two touched she felt warm against him. Elias did not feel cold, but he understood warm.

Noelani wasn’t the least bit satisfied. But the flash of annoyance was evident and he decided to back off. Baby steps. That’s all this was going to take, right? Shaking his shoulders out he smiled. “Maybe I should ask him to rub that confidence off on me.” He laughed loudly. “Now. How about that ice cream?”

Elias was almost surprised that the other chose not to pursue his line of thought. Perhaps Elias could be more intimidating than he thought? “I daresay he has some to spare. Though from what I can tell you hardly seem in need of it.”  he nodded slightly, “Very well. We’d best be off. I do hope you’ll be partaking in this as well?”

“Well, if you’ve had this curse for so long, then you likely have more control of it than you give yourself credit for.  And honestly, if you don’t then I’m sure you could learn to control it without isolating yourself from everyone you care about.  It probably hurts them a lot more to see you troubled in such a way.  I know I’d be far more saddened by the idea of someone I care about avoiding me, than I would of any curse they have that may bring me harm.”

“I wouldn’t think so.” he said, shaking his head slightly, “My parents chosen method was avoidance. I cannot say I have used it enough to truly wield it correctly.” he sighed, “It just appears when I lose control of my feelings.” he explained, “I know they are not exactly pleased with me. But I would rather them angry or sad with me and alive and well then not and end up being hurt by me.”

“The buildings?”  she asked, surprised that that was what he had an interest in.  It certainly wasn’t the first thing that people asked when they talked about Atlantis,”  Most people are more curious in the history or magic of the supposed city.”

“Yes.” he confirmed with a small nod, “Architecture is something of a hobby of mine. Different societies have perfected different styles of building. I wonder what such a place would look like.” He sighed slightly as she continued, “The history would be of great importance I am sure. But I have had quite enough of magic for my lifetime.”

“You are,” Anders insisted,” You’re doing that thing again where you hold me at an arm’s length.  I don’t get it Elias.  I’m your brother, but there are times you don’t act like it and I don’t see why you feel the need to shut me out sometimes…”

Elias opened his mouth to argue but sighed and paused to collect himself, “Well Anders you made it clear you do not wish to share your issues with me. I believe it best I not step on any other toes by being overly familiar.” he said quietly, “Besides, I do so for your own good. Yours and Olives. I only wish you to be safe.”

It was no surprise to Navi that Elias was shy–he was so handsome but so insecure about it. Not to mention, Navi did not totally understand how his views of his own magic had gotten so mixed up, but she knew they were certainly not good, and he had some reason, odd as the reason was. Perhaps that was why she pushed him a little. That, or maybe because she has little patience for insecurity. “You have a gift for the clothes too. And, besides, it is not just the clothes. You are so handsome, too. Your face and body and all this. The Princess is a lucky woman.”

Elias really wasn’t used to people telling him outright that he was handsome. His siblings and himself never really broached the subject, they were too busy trying not to step on one another’s toes. His parents may have told him, but then that was what every parent told their child. “I merely imitated what I have seen others wearing.” he shrugged, Elias rarely commented on things, but he did see a lot. “Please don't.” he said quietly, looking to the ground and feeling his face heat slightly, “Francesca and I.... Very little has been attempted in such things.” he mumbled.

Navi shook her head. She would never understand Elias. It was as clear to her as that. She would never understand Elias, and he surely did not understand her. And yet, it did not bother her. Since she had no real interest in him as a companion for anything other than friendship, if he was to be incomprehensible to her forever, that was simply the way it was going to be.

Navi was fairly certain the wonder of watching Elias–watching anyone, really–perform magic would never wear off. It amazed her to no end. Of all the things Maldonia lacked, she had grown certain that magic was by far the most riveting. “Yes,” she said, after having stared for far longer that would be appropriate in any other situation. “Yes, that is less stuffy. Your fashion sense–it is not half bad. You could be a designer, if you weren’t busy being king.”

Elias was all to aware some people could never see eye to eye on some matters. It was always a worry to him that he and Anders were so different, if they were similar... It wasn’t really worth thinking about. Still, it didn’t mean they couldn’t get on, after all, he and Navi seemed to be managing okay, and he was certain they were as different as could be.

Elias glanced away a little at her expression, he just wasn’t really used to seeing such a positive reaction when it came to his magic. He would always expect people to run or scream. He glanced up but couldn’t hold eye contact with her stare, though he told himself it was for his new attire and nothing more. “Good. I am pleased you find it less... stuffy.” he nodded slightly before chuckling, “I think not. I have always preferred designing buildings over designing clothes.”

“Knock it off, Elias.” Noelani said shaking his head with a heavy sigh. “I am hardly the superior sibling and you are hardly inadequacy. Got it? Now repeat that…for, uhm, my benefit. I think it sounded pretty witty.” He laughed, hoping it covered up the fact he was essentially bossing his boss around. “In deed he did…and he gave the whole kingdom a hilarious story to tell over dinner. I’m sure all the children love to tell it.” 

Elias glanced away, it was odd. Most people chose not to comment on his quips towards himself, Noelani seemed determined to address them, it was both kind and almost irritating in a way. “I do not see how repeating the words will help...” then he muttered, “I am hardly the superior sibling and you are hardly inadequacy. Satisfied?” he asked, though he did smile slightly as the other continued, “I daresay he was the talk of the town fro quite some time. I don’t think it really bothered him though, he’s always been so confident.”

“It is wonderful,” Navi agreed, a grin and a glint in her eye. “You should try it some time. Loving yourself, I mean. It is good for the soul.” To her, such things were simple. It was easier for her to love herself and live that way than not, and Navi always took the easiest path she could. There was nothing more to it.

His words spoke of rejection, but all Navi focused on was the little smile. The tiniest smirk. If it had been anyone else, he would’ve laughed aloud. Navi was sure of it. It was only Elias’s serious, stone-like demeanor that kept him from giggle-fits. “Change?” she repeated, surprised by his statement. “Here? Show me.” She folded her hands on her chest and watched, wondering whether the stuffy king was going to do something very unexpected.

Elias only chuckled slightly at her words, “I think that loving myself is my own form for never-coming change.” he said quietly, good for the soul or no it just went against every instinct which had been engraved on him since childhood. He didn’t know how.

He really shouldn’t have spoken, damn him and his big mouth. Now he’d gotten himself into a situation. Still, there were being afforded privacy at the moment, and he’d already used his powers once today, and this time they would only affect himself. “Very well.” he said quietly. Gently removing a glove Elias gestured at himself. His clothes began to glow, then a substance like powdered snow covered him for a moment, as it vanished, it formed into a new set of clothing. He stood before the Princess in boots, jeans, and a long-sleeved light blue t-shirt. “Is this perhaps, less stuffy?” he questioned, pulling the glove back on.

The switch in his brother was pained Anders.  It wasn’t like he could explain to him what was happening, he couldn’t even hint at it.

“Don’t do that please,” Anders said of his brother’s sudden coldness,” It’s just not anything you should worry about.  No reason to turn….. cold.”  He grinned a little at the joke, hoping his brother would lighten up again.

Elias had a bad habit of falling back on what felt ‘safety’ for him. Trouble was, that usually involved placing as much distance between himself and others as he could. 

“I am not doing anything Anders.” he said impassively, “I am simply pleased that you are not dealing with anything too difficult to manage.” He sent the other a deadpan stare, “The cold never really bothered me.” he replied, the barest hint of a smile on his face.

“I see,” she said lightly,” But you can’t let a curse dictate your life or stop you from getting what you want?  The people that care about you are going to stand by you no matter what, and anyone else can just…. welll they can just keep their distance on their own.”

“Why not?” Elias asked, genuinely confused. After all, his curse had dictated his childhood, his lifestyle, his loneliness, it had ruled him more than any other trait had. “Sometimes, this curse can be dangerous Madame, I would rather not risk harming those I care for. They would all be safer keeping their distance.”

[kingelias]

“You’re rather taken by the thought of Atlantis, huh?”   Perhaps some of her team had already leaked their goal.  She wasn’t quite sure, since she hadn’t seen them in awhile.  They didn’t come across as the type to go around just telling everyone and anyone about their trip, but it also wouldn’t be the first time she was surprised by them,”  What do you know of the city?”

“I suppose I am more taken with the idea of a truly hidden city more than anything. I find myself wondering what their buildings would look like.” Elias said, it would be full of new things, new people, maybe have magic of its own that could help him with his. But those were silly dreams, even if the place were found, “Next to nothing, save that it has supposedly sunk beneath the ocean.”

“And this unfamiliar situation would be…….?” she asked, still not buying into this entire way of thinking.

“Myself, or rather, my curse.” he amended, most in the kingdom knew of his powers, it was foolish to try and keep it a secret by this point. “It was the best way to keep people safe from me.”

[kingelias]

A new partner? Navi stifled a laugh. There were times when she had a new partner every week, and none of them had ever really inspired much change in her personality, for better or for worse. Well, for better, really, since Navi believed herself fairly close to flawless. “I like the way I am,” she explained in response, unbothered by his words. “Why would I change.”

Immediately, Navi held her hands up. “No, no, you look quite handsome,” she clarified, not wanting to lay a blow to his already too-low-in-her-opinion self esteem. “You look handsome, but in a…you know. A stiff sort of way.” Her eyes glinted, and she found she couldn’t help herself from adding. “A cold way, perhaps?” before bursting into a tiny fit of giggles. “Get it? Because you have the powers. You know.”

Elias supposed most, if not all, of what he was saying was lost on the other. After all, they were simply too very different people, he still believed the other could, and would, change. Though he doubted it would be by his hand. “That must be nice, liking yourself I mean.” he said, he couldn’t recall a time he’d truly liked who he was. “Only you can answer that I believe. You will change when you see fit.” 

He glanced down and shook his head slightly, “I would hardly say so.” he said quietly, it was just a difficult thing for him to conceive. He glanced at her and frowned slightly, “Forgive my saying so, but that joke was rather abysmal.” he said, though the tiniest of smirks was visible on his face. “I can easily change should you wish?” he asked, there was no one around at the moment, and oddly enough he felt more comfortable conjuring clothes for himself than conjuring any snow or ice. If this went awry, he could only harm himself.
