“No! Then I would drown.”
“No you wouldn’t. We’re designed to float! Let me teach you!”
“No. Not recently, at least. Are they all shirtless and handsome as you?”
“I...uhm. Probably more-so.”
Navi stared silently for several moments, not reacting. Then, “Huh?”
“Have you. Been to. The beach?”
“No. Never. Don’t you drown?”
“You can’t be serious with me right now. You’ve never swum before?”
“Oh! The waves! I saw a couple of people riding them earlier, they didn’t seem too dangerous, but then again… I suck at reading the sea”.
“...Want to learn?”
“But will your chest not get cold?” she asked, horribly confused.
“Have you...never swum before?”
“I have not,” she replied coolly. “Do you need a shirt? And how come you want to know what the ocean looks like?”
“No. I don’t need a shirt. I’m going surfing.”
“Blue, wet, full of fishes and other things? it looks the same as always, unless I’m missing something…”
“No, no, no. I meant the waves. Are they big? Small? Wild? These are the things I’m looking for!”
“Hey. You over there. Been to the beach today? I need to know what the ocean looks like before I finalize any plans to go out today.”
Elias was almost surprised that the other chose not to pursue his line of thought. Perhaps Elias could be more intimidating than he thought? “I daresay he has some to spare. Though from what I can tell you hardly seem in need of it.” he nodded slightly, “Very well. We’d best be off. I do hope you’ll be partaking in this as well?”
“Trust me. It’s mostly fake. Which is the best kind of confidence if you ask me. Although sometimes it’s real.” Noelani laughed. “I’m not actually sure how to describe what I mean by that wither.” Another laugh. “Of course I am! It’s ice cream...and I’m not going to be the lame friend who watches you eat.”
“And I’m sure you’ve tried talking to him?”, Priscilla bit her lip, trying to think about something to help. “What about an activity? Like joining a sport or… Something to keep him busy so he doesn’t hex people”
“Every day, but sometimes I worry I’m just pushing him away. I’m not sure he’s interested in that sort of thing...but it’s not a bad idea. At least when he’s doing that he can’t get in trouble...right?”
Elias glanced away, it was odd. Most people chose not to comment on his quips towards himself, Noelani seemed determined to address them, it was both kind and almost irritating in a way. “I do not see how repeating the words will help…” then he muttered, “I am hardly the superior sibling and you are hardly inadequacy. Satisfied?” he asked, though he did smile slightly as the other continued, “I daresay he was the talk of the town fro quite some time. I don’t think it really bothered him though, he’s always been so confident.”
Noelani wasn’t the least bit satisfied. But the flash of annoyance was evident and he decided to back off. Baby steps. That’s all this was going to take, right? Shaking his shoulders out he smiled. “Maybe I should ask him to rub that confidence off on me.” He laughed loudly. “Now. How about that ice cream?”
“I have no idea what Leolani thinks”, the blonde scratched her head. “I meant… sometimes we take for granted what our family does for us, even our friends. Does he give you a lot of trouble on a regular basis?”
“An understatement.” Noelani said with a heavy sigh. “It’s not a normal day without someone telling me that Leolani tried to hex them or stole something or got into a fight. It’s...highly annoying.”
“I-” he paused and simply nodded, “Very well. Let us be away before I find even more cause to change my mind.” He rubbed his hands over each other slightly, “Of course it does. Sometimes it’s very difficult to let younger siblings come to their own conclusions.” At the others question he looked up and shook his head, eyes wide, “Of course, I will not say a word. It’s hardly my place after all. You’re his sibling, and a far superior one than I.”
“Almost ironically, he frightened the pig back into the arms of his owner.” he said with a small smile, “So, despite his roundabout methods, he did what he said he would do.”
“Knock it off, Elias.” Noelani said shaking his head with a heavy sigh. “I am hardly the superior sibling and you are hardly inadequacy. Got it? Now repeat that...for, uhm, my benefit. I think it sounded pretty witty.” He laughed, hoping it covered up the fact he was essentially bossing his boss around. “In deed he did...and he gave the whole kingdom a hilarious story to tell over dinner. I’m sure all the children love to tell it.”
“Well, if you insist.” he said quietly, guessing there was no way he could dissuade the other, save from ordering him, and he suspected even that would fail. “I wouldn’t be surprised, people can get vert attached to pets, or so I’ve been told. And I have no doubt you shall indulge him as soon as you’re able.” he added with a smile, Noelani was the kind of elder sibling he wished he could be.
“Anders decided to help a young boy recover his runaway pig. In the process he overturned half of the market stalls within the square, snap several bunting decorations and finally, sink a small ship.” he shook his head, “Falling in the ocean in the process.” His look of disappointment couldn’t hold out and he found himself chuckling once more, “He came to my room, soaking wet from top to bottom, a piece of seaweed still on his shoulder.” he laughed outright, “Oh I imagine Olive enjoyed that as much as I. But it did require some cleaning up.” he paused, smiling once more, “He never did catch the pig though.”
“I do insist.” Noelani said, crossing his arms. “And we’re not going to stand here a moment longer talking about it. I’m going to call the car and we’re going. Got it?” His voice was hard but his smile was warm. It felt good to be getting Elias to open up like this. To smile like that, even if it was a small one. “Correct you are. But he needs to come to that conclusion first. I won’t be bringing it up with him...and niether will you, right?”
“That is...That is quiet a story. And a shame he didn’t catch the wayward pig. Probably scared the poor thing for life though.”
“Good gracious, you really needn’t go to so much trouble,” Elias wasn’t used to putting people out, he usually tried his hardest to avoid such situations. He was pleased that the other laughed with him though, that story was one of his few happy memories growing up. At the others story he found himself chortling and again covering his mouth with his fist, “Gracious, the poor boy. I can imagine it changed his perspective about Pudgie.” he shook his head a little, “I suppose my favourite story involves, Anders, a runway pig and the destruction of much of the city.” he said, he’d have loved to tease the other about it more but worried it may upset him.
“Yes. Yes I do.” Noelani said, the tone of his voice final. Noelani laughed and shook his head. “I think, secretly, Leolani was upset we had to move because he couldn’t feed Pudgie anymore. Although I’ll bet you half of my house the minute he finds out how much money we have he’ll ask to road trip back at least once.” He laughed again, feeling good about himself. “A run away pig? Now that sounds like a story I need to hear.”
“It happens sometimes”, Priscilla smiled and nodded. “Sometimes I take what my Mother does for granted”
“If Leolani thinks I his father I think I’ve got bigger problems than I originally thought.” Noelani laughed. “I think me being his brother is part of the reason he acts thee way he acts with me.”
