Much to your dismay, tonight was another one of Stark's Avengers parties. You hated these things, but Bruce asked you to come- and how could you say no to him? He was so sweet about it. Most of the Avengers were nice, at least—most of them. Stark always annoyed you, even before you'd met him. He'd always come off as a cocky, childish, know-it-all. And meeting him in person only solidified that for you.
There were plenty of reasons to be nervous at these parties, but you were especially on edge now after the whole Ultron thing that had happened last time. Bruce, though...he was intuitive to your feelings. He stayed near you as much as possible, always had a palm against the small of your back, and let you lean into him when you sat on the couch together - truly a gentleman, despite the green guy. Truth was, though, you were there for him as much as he was there for you. He never said it, but you could tell.
The Avengers were best friends, they were family, but they were also bullies. Well...some more than others. He never said it...but you could tell. It upset Bruce a lot that no one checked up on him after Ultron.
You were standing in a small group- Bruce, Stark, Natasha, and yourself. You just listened to them talk for the most part, elbows to your chest as you nursed the drink in a glass you were gripping just a little too tightly. Your shoulder was pressed to Bruce's chest as he stood beside you, and your eyes were on Nat. This world was so different from what you were used to. Your coworkers went to mixers sometimes and dragged you along, but they were never like this.
It was hard not to notice how often Tony was bringing up Nat & Bruce's little fling they'd had, and each time, the pads of your fingers would dig into the cold glass you were holding. You were a good person. Nice, patient, caring- but something about Stark really just irked you. Bruce excused himself, and you couldn't help but look up to him as if you were a puppy he'd just kicked. He laughed softly, grabbing your shoulders and leaning down to press a kiss to your temple before walking off before you could protest.
"You always this lively, Princess? I don't know how Banner puts up with it. Too much energy over here, right, Nat?" Tony gestured vaguely at you with the hand that he wasn't drinking with. You tried to hide your deep sigh, gritting your teeth and forcing as pleasant a smile as you could towards him. Your eyes flicked back over towards Natasha, and you could see the sly smirk tugging at the corner of her lip. She was always so observant. "Hey." He waved his hand in front of your face, trying to take back your attention. "I know you talk, I've heard you before." He laughed a little. "I bet you don't have trouble talking to the big green rage machine." He rolled his eyes. Your grip on the glass tightened. It was a good thing you weren't like them; you might've shattered the glass if you were.
"Tony..." Natasha warned him, voice low but with a hint of amusement in her tone.
“In fact…” He started, not taking any care to notice how you hadn’t said a single word to him yet, as he turned back towards you, nearly spilling his drink as he tipped the glass. “How do you put up with him? You’re not afraid he’s just gonna snap one day and go green? You don’t feel like you have to walk on eggshells in your own apartment?” He laughed a little.
You didn’t.
“Mr. Stark-“ Your voice was quiet, a little mousy or so it’s been described. He seemed to not even hear you interject, considering how he kept talking.
“What kind of backup plan do you have if that happens? You know he’s not really killable, right? He’s tri-“
You didn’t even feel your hand move- you weren’t even positive what had happened until you saw everyone staring at you. Did you really just…slap Tony Stark? Well…now that you had his attention…you might as well speak your mind.
"Bruce isn't like that. Not that you would know, you never care to call him or ask how he's doing. You don't care about anything other than yourself, Mr. Stark." You hoped he'd catch the sarcasm that dripped over his name as you spat it at him.
Tony, for once in his life, was speechless. His eyes flicked between yours, the now shattered glass of alcohol at his feet, and Bruce- who was finally coming back from wherever he'd excused himself to.
"Hey...Hey...What's going on..?" His voice wasn't raised as he approached you, but there was a quiver of worry in his words. Your hands moved down to your hips, your eyes locked on Tony's face. "Yeah, Mr. Stark. What is going on?" Your brow quirked as you baited him. It was only fair for you to do it since he'd been doing it to you all night, you thought.
"Uhm..." Tony took a breath, looking towards you, eyes gazing up and down your body, before his attention went back to Bruce. "Ya know, I think I might've had too much to drink. I'm gonna...I'm gonna go." He spoke quickly, turning on his heel to leave before Bruce could ask any more questions.
Bruce looked puzzled, letting out a soft laugh of disbelief.
"Honey..." He started, looking down towards you as his hand found the small of your back again. "What the hell did you do to make Tony Stark react like that? He's never once in his life thought he'd had too much to drink."
"I'll tell you when we leave." You mused, looking around the room. "Which...should be now."
He laughed a little again, not needing another reason to leave the party early.
