Chapter XX — The Story They Sold
I closed the dressing room door and set my phone on the table.
Sam looked up from the script.
I showed him the screen. An obscure post buried in a corner of the internet. A rumor blog. An alleged certificate. A wedding. A husband who had never existed in my life.
Sam read in silence. Then he let out a bitter laugh.
"So, they chose England."
"Of course they did. If they were going to fabricate a marriage, it had to be there. Far enough away that no one could easily check the facts, yet familiar enough for everyone to say, 'Oh, right... anyone can get a copy over there.'"
Silence fell between us.
"They didn't need an actual marriage," Sam said at last. "They just needed people to believe it existed."
I sat in front of the mirror.
"People think lies come out of thin air. They don't. They're built. First, a document with no clear source appears. Then a blog publishes it. Another quotes it. Next, a magazine says, 'according to reports.' After a few months, nobody remembers what the original source was. All that remains is the repetition."
He set the script down on the table.
"A lie repeated a thousand times begins to look like official record."
I looked at the screen once more. It didn't hurt that strangers believed it. It hurt knowing someone had engineered that story with the precision of a marketing campaign. Not to convince me. To convince the world.
"And what about us?" Sam asked.
I looked at him. We had learned years ago that some truths survive only because those who share them choose to protect them. I took his hand.
"We stay us. That's the one thing they'll never be able to write."
"Then let them publish all the papers they want."
I turned off the phone. The sound of rain beating against the window felt infinitely more real than any document anyone could ever manufacture.
Anything can fit a narrative when there is INTENTION behind.
