James? Sirius?
Me. That’s what’s wrong.
What are you talking about Pete?
I can't talk to girls, mate! You should've seen me with Carmella. I'm such a bleeding idiot! -kicks a pair of pants far across the floor-
James? Sirius?
Merlin’s beard, I’m such a bloody idiot.
Pete?
What’s wrong buddy?
Me. That's what's wrong.
James? Sirius?
Merlin's beard, I'm such a bloody idiot.
Buddy Holly - That’ll Be The Day
Oh Captain! My Captain! | Elias, James, Peter, Sirius
Sirius grinned wider, watching Peter doing this with them meant more to him than anything else. He could tell the rest of the class were surprised, even Hawkstern himself couldn’t believe the daring nerve, his blonde friend possessed.
He nodded and smiled proudly at Peter, acknowledging his bravery and realizing that they were both going to be in trouble, but it was worth it. You mess with one Marauder and you mess with all of them, it was just the way it was meant to be.
“Oh Captain my captain!” Caradoc Dearborn stood up from his desk as well, and Sirius grinned watching the Hufflepuff standing up against his fellow Hufflepuff as well.
Slowly, without realizing it…desks were pushed and some chairs were moved, while others sat down, others slowly rise from their seats and took part in cheering James on.
Just as Elias was about to scold Mr. Black to sit down again, came another surprise from his left.
He watched Mr. Pettigrew stand up as well, acknowledging Mr. Potter as the captain of the team. The respect and the loyalty for his friends shone in his eyes and Elias couldn’t believe it.
“Sit down Mr. Pettigrew!” he scolded.
And then another surprise came in the form of Caradoc Dearborn. The dueling captain, the man Elias almost expelled but never pursued to do so have defied him again and stood up on his desk.
“You don’t want to be expelled do you Mr. Dearborn?!” he asked but knew it was too late.
Slowly, dozens of students, mostly from the Gryffindor house all stood up from their desks, ignoring the test papers he handed out and slowly climbing up on their tables.
“Oh Captain my Captain!”
“Potter is our king!”
“James we’re here for you!”
“You go James!”
Elias’ could feel his face flush.
“STOP. STOP. STOP.” he scolded but it was getting way out of hand and he reluctantly conceded to their loyalty.
“Mr. Potter.” he turned his attention to the boy waiting by the door frame and waited for his response.
James stood frozen on his spot. He couldn’t believe what he just saw. His eyes turned from Sirius to Peter, and he grinned wider, he knew Peter had a hard time getting over his nerves but seeing him standing up for him meant the world to him. He was surprised, awestruck and touched by this gesture. They could have been in trouble! They could have been goners but they didn’t seem to mind it at all, even choosing to ignore Hawkstern’s consistent protests and scoldings.
“Oh Captain my captain!” Caradoc Dearborn shouted and stood up on the desk as well. James blinked, after Doc stood up, slowly and surely almost half the class were getting up, discarding their test papers and standing on their tables, cheering him on, letting him know that they believed in him.
James’ vision was blurry and he could feel the stinging sensation of tears but he fought the urge for the need of release.
“Mr. Potter…” Professor Hawkstern croaked out, as if desperate for him to change this situation.
James didn’t know what to do…after all, after a scene like this, how was one supposed to react?
He grinned and croaked out the words.
“Thank you guys…” he smiled at his true friends, touched by their gesture.
“Thank you.”
And without knowing whether or not he was still supposed to be in Hogwarts, James Potter left the classroom and closed the door behind him.
The moment seemed legendary. It was as if they were a actors in a scene of a movie. Surely, Peter gained the courage to stand up for his friend regardless of the sure thought that he'd be expelled along side of Sirius and James. But what would Peter be without his friends anyways?
It was a thrilling sensation to see more students rise from their seats along with them and fight on James behalf. They all believed in his friend.
Before James exited, Peter smiled reassuringly at him and watched him exit. He then turned his head to Sirius and nodded.
"Wicked." he mouthed.
"but he fought the urge for the need of release."
Oh Captain! My Captain! | Elias, James, Peter, Sirius
Elias nodded and watched James Potter gather up his things and leave the classroom. He didn’t meant what he said about the expulsion and for a moment there, he wanted to take back the words but his word was final and he was tired of being constantly reminded of his youthful past. His past that was once robbed, when there was a time where he was happy and brave and carefree like him.
He nodded and was about to resume his place behind the desk. Mr. Potter will be gone now…
He heard a creaking of the chairs and turned around.
“Sit down Mr. Pettigrew.” Elias scolded, without the venomous tone. He was too surprised that Peter would dare defy the rules.
“Oh captain my captain!” Sirius Black shouted and Elias’ jaw dropped, watching the boy stand up on his desk.
“SIT BACK DOWN MR. BLACK!…SIT DOWN!”
James slung his bag over his shoulder and walked out of the classroom, ignoring the stares from his classmates as he tried to shrug it off like it was no big deal.
He smiled gratefully at Peter for standing as he passed by the desk. He couldn’t believe how amazing his friends were, their loyalty and their reckless minds was just something that he could never get over with.
“Thanks Wormtail” he said and placed a hand on Peter’s shoulder.
He really had the best friends anyone could ever had.
James frowned and walked in the direction of the doorway, maybe when all this is over he could-
“OH Captain my captain!” Sirius’ voiced boomed out and James turned around, his eyes widened as he watched his best friend stood on the desk in protest.
Peter grinned excitedly at Sirius' act of protest. His friend's courage and loyalty was incredibly admirable. All Peter ever wanted to do was to be able to mirror Sirius Black. To show his friends that he too was a courageous Gryffindor. He hated being the one to slither back into the shadows when things got rough. Sirius and James were always the ones to handle the bad times. But this time, there was a wounded soldier and it was time for Peter to take his place and fight.
Peter nodded at Sirius and turned around to face James who was solemnly walking towards the exit. He ignored the stares from the rest of the students who's jaws were dropped in disbelief. Peter stepped a foot onto his chair and stumbled slightly as he was stepping onto the desk but quickly regained his balance and resumed his smile.
Echoing Sirius, he shouted towards James, "Oh, Captain! My Captain!"
Oh Captain! My Captain! | Elias, James, Peter, Sirius
Elias couldn’t believe it. He growled and interrupted James as he continued accusing him of being unfair.
“Sit down! Sit down I say!” he demanded, his voice growing louder with each passing second but Mr. Potter wouldn’t back down.
Suddenly, another figure stood up and retaliated. Elias’ face flushed as he listened to Sirius Black standing by his best friends.
“Ah of course…Black and Potter…practically brothers in crime.” he scowled. “I want you two to sit down…on second thought…” he paused.
“Leave this classroom Mr. Potter. Mr. Black is only standing up for you. Gather up your things and leave. I rather not see you today…or ever…”
“Goodbye.” he said coldly.
James smiled at his best friend but immediately froze when Hawkstern told him to leave and never come back. He knew it was over. He never expected to win this argument. He just wanted to be fair. To let out the things that has been bothering him for quite some time now. He hoped that Hawkstern would see reason, to perhaps help repair this student/teacher relationship and start anew.
But it was over.
He was possibly expelled.
He couldn’t stand not being able to fight if he could help it.
He blinked and looked around. He noticed his classmates all looking shocked. James Potter, marauder, prankster, quidditch captain, or former if you will…has been expelled?
He looked down at his empty test paper and nodded.
Maybe it was time to go.
Peter furrowed his brow at Hawkstern's response. It wasn't fair of a Professor to tell one of his students that he wished to never see him ever again. James was struggling here and if it weren't for Sirius, James may have considered backing down. Peter could see James' eyes flicker back and forth from the front of the room to his desk where his things lay.
No. He can't give up. He's never given up.
Peter mentally cursed himself and with a clenched stomach, he pushed himself up from the desk and stood. He let out a soft sigh as he conquered the initial step to courage. Peter's eyes widened slightly as some spiritual and mental force sent him forward to stand beside his two friends. When he caught their glances, he gave a reassuring nod. It was going to be ok.
Oh Captain! My Captain! | Elias, James, Peter, Sirius
Sirius snapped out of his present daydream, and his eyes quickly darted over to the person who interrupted.
It was James.
James? he thought, wondering what was going on. It took a while for Sirius to register when finally. Finally, he grinned an all too knowing grin and looked over to Peter, noticing the nervous expression he was giving.
His grin faded away instantly. Of course, Peter’s face says it all. What if James gets expelled? Merlin knows he was in way to deep to escape this one.
And Hawkstern…what about him?
Sirius’ eyes quickly glanced over to Hawkstern, realizing that everyone was staring at the teacher now.
Elias was about to sit down when he heard someone calling out his name. He wheeled around and his eyes widened. James Potter was standing up, calling him out on the spot.
Elias didn’t react verbally yet. He was still surprised the boy had this daring nerve to speak out during a test! He scowled and took a deep breath, trying to remain calm.
“Sit down Mr. Potter.” he said coolly, ignoring the surprised faces of his other students.
“Sir, with all due respect. You had no right to punish without listening to my side of the story and you have no right to expel me, not so long as Albus Dumbledore remains as headmaster!” he retorted, not even listening. He clenched his fists, “Sir you have to understand. You have to see reason. You don’t have to like me but you can’t do that! That’s not the Hufflepuff thing to do!” he frowned and turned around, as if addressing to the whole class, “A hufflepuff values just and fairness right?” he asked, not expecting an answer among his peers.
“But what is justice without hearing two part of the story?!” he demanded.
The Marauders were nearly always out of line when it came to pranks, mishaps in the Great Hall, the way they addressed the attractive interns studying beneath McGonagall, and the way they often stole certain plants from the Herbology greenhouse but this almost seemed too much for them. Too much for just James! Friends were supposed to believe in each other, but to Peter, this seemed all too much for James to handle by himself. James was clearly ready to make valid points in his argument, but with a stubborn Professor and about thirty tests out in front of the students, the timing just wasn't right.
Peter winced slightly and he set his quill down, ready to listen to what James had to say. Or maybe he set his quill down because he was ready to get up and run at any moment with the other two of his mates. He sucked in both of his lips and bit down on them giving the appearance he had no lips now, and nothing to say unless James directly addressed him. Which in this case, didn't seem very likely. This was between Potter and Hawkstern.
Peter looked over at Sirius again as James addressed the rest of the class in hopes that Sirius would instruct him on what to do...or when to start running.
Oh Captain! My Captain! | Elias, James, Peter, Sirius
Sirius, who was seated two seats away from Peter and was on James’ left side merely looked bored. Truth be told, he knew James was fidgeting because he wanted to do something that Sirius told him to. Whether it was a good idea or not, still remains to be seen.
He frowned and rested his chin on his palm, staring outside the window. The golden hoops of the Quidditch pitch glistened and Sirius could see why James was nervous.
“Yes you can…” he drawled. “You can do it James.”
Elias narrowed his eyes and glared at the three students. No less it was James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew, chatting among themselves like it was nothing.
Elias scowled. “No talking!” he barked and turned around to his seat.
James couldn’t take it anymore. He couldn’t concentrate. He couldn’t even answer the test. He was mad, mad at Hawkstern for scolding them when he knew they haven’t done anything wrong. He was mad at the injustice, the unfairness and the fact that he was coldly addressing him like he was nothing.
James could have ignored it. He had that reaction plenty of times from the slytherins but what really bothered him was the fact that the man avoided practical reason.
“You can do it James…” Sirius’ words echoed throughout his mind.
“No.” he stood up. “Professor, please see reason!” he pleaded, ignoring the surprised stares from his classmates. “You hate me don’t you? Admit it! You know I didn’t punch you on purpose! Just please let me back on the team,”
He closed his eyes and sucked in his breath. His arrogance coming back, he still find it hard to apologize.
“Don’t be unreasonable!” he said.
Instinctively, Peter ducked his head as the Professor scolded the three of them for talking. He knew it'd happen sooner or later during the exam. Whenever there was an outburst, Peter always took one step back as a precaution to getting something thrown at him. He'd seen his grandmum throw her cooking books at a group of menacing teenage boys in the neighborhood when Peter was a child. Merlin forbid that ever happened to Peter, he'd probably cry.
But this outburst grabbed Peter's attention and forced him to look up at the source. James!? No! During a test?
"Bloody hell, what's he doing? He's going to get himself expelled for sure this time. That can't happen. James just can't be expelled!" he thought to himself.
Peter worriedly glanced over at Sirius quickly then back up to James.
Oh Captain! My Captain! | Elias, James, Peter, Sirius
“Now I want all of you to sit down and take the exam quietly!” Elias Hawkstern’s voice boomed throughout the classroom. It had been days since he was punched and physically attacked by James Potter and Sirius Black and he had no intention of letting it go anytime soon. In fact, just seeing the two troublemakers makes his blood boil. The worst part? His job was on the line. Never mind the fact that he was treated as a joke lately, it was a miracle he hadn’t expelled the two.
“You may now begin.” he said, not letting his eyes leave James Potter for a second.
James could practically feel the fire emanating from Hawkstern’s intense glare. He frowned and avoided eye contact, ducking his head lower as he stared down at the examination sheet in front of him.
It was another test that required an essay. James was never one to beat around the bush, which is why he detested writing them so. Nevertheless, he picked up his quill and dipped it into his inkpot, watching the single drop fall unto the parchment.
What does it matter? Day in and day out it was tests, homework, class, test, test and a bunch of other tests. Quidditch was the one thing James wanted to do all his life and now that he was banned from the team, he wondered what was going to happen.
It was as if he let the whole team down.
He let the whole house down.
“I can’t do this.” he whispered to Peter.
Peter’s nose was pressed against the parchment. It was just the way he worked on assighnments. Quill firmly gripped in his left hand and his face pressed against the test booklet. James looked uneasy out of the corner of his eye and he couldn’t help but notice. James fiddled with his pen too often and his eyes were scanning the room frequently. Peter cleared his throat, frowning slightly then returned to the booklet.
When James spoke, Peter’s stomach clenched. This was a test and the Professor who nearly expelled his two best mates was less than 5 feet away from their desks. Peter unobtrusively dead panned until his eyes met James.
“The test?” he frowned at his friend, shrugging his shoulders. “Mate, I can’t do it for you. Just make something up.” Peter shut his mouth and remained silent, but his eyes offered an apology. He returned to the test and dipped his quill into the inkpot.

Thanks, Josie. -continues to wipe the dirt off of his cloak as a gradual smile pulls across his face- You really think so? I'll have to show Sirius then. Maybe I really am good!
