A Meeting in Dunbroch Castle
Through the window, Mufasa could see only white. The snow fell mercilessly. None of the weathermen nor any of the prophets had seen it coming. He had already declared a state of emergency in the capitol city, and Chief Powhatan and King Triton had declared states of emergency in the Hundred Acre Wood and Atlantica. And if the snow continued to fall the way it was here, the Highlands would be in duress soon as well.Â
Queen Elinor had done more than enough to make sure he and his son were comfortable during their extended stay in Dunbroch Castle. They had plenty of rooms, and overnight she had turned a spare room into a fine office for Mufasa. This is where he stood now, watching the storm rage on. Simba was somewhere else in the castle with Merida no doubt; it pleased Mufasa to see his son getting along with the princess so well. The Highlanders were important allies. He made a mental note to send King Fergus a gift when this was all over, for their exceptional hospitality.Â
"No one is to go anywhere while it snows. Itâs too dangerous," he ordered a guard behind him. "Send word to Sergeant Calhoun, Captain Phoebus, the Forest Guard, and Kerchak. The moment the snow stops, they are to carry out the search and rescue plans that I have approved. Women and children first. Hospitals and schools especially."
"Yes Your Majesty," came the reply, and Mufasa turned to look at the guard.Â
"And tell my council that tonight I will call a meeting online. And make sure Powhatan understands that he is not to risk any of his warriorsâ lives by going out into the storm. And I need to talk to Emilia, the Enchantress. Find her."
Mufasa sighed and tightened his jaw.Â
"All right. Bring her in."
The guard bowed and left, and after just a few moments, the doors opened again. This time General Li entered, prisoner in tow. Mufasaâs lips curled into a frown, and he nodded at the general.Â
Queen Valentina, ruler of Wonderland and all her surrounding territories, scowled and twisted in her handcuffs. And then, in one fluid motion, her scowl turned into a sickeningly sweet grin.Â
"Your Highness," she smiled. "I would bow, but Iâm a bit tied up at the moment," she motioned to the cuffs.Â
"Release her," said the King, and moments later she was freed. General Li stepped back, just barely out of earshot. Valentina shrugged off her white fur cloak to reveal a blood red dress underneath. She sat down daintily, grinning at him the whole time.Â
Mufasa took a piece of paper out of his pocket, and began to read aloud.Â
"Oh, uhm Your Majesty," began the Red Queen. "I was thinking that we would have some tea first, or last or in between. Itâs good manners you kn-"
"Valentina," said Mufasa flatly, and the queen trailed off. He continued reading.
"âŠSeventeen accounts of reckless endangerment, a violation of the Treaty of Agrabah, 1958, Page 9, Paragraph 4, Line 13âŠ"
"Ohhhh oh that!" interrupted Valentina. "Terrible business that was, terrible terrible horrendous! I assure you the monsters will never get loose again. Oh, all those poor poor soulsâŠ" she took a red silk handkerchief from her pocket and dabbed at her dry eyes.Â
"Three hundred and forty four people were slaughtered, Valentina," said Mufasa. "Countless injured," he folded up the paper and put it away. "And they all just happened to be your most prominent political enemies."
"Were they?" sniffed Valentina. "Those poor poor flowers."
Mufasa stared at her for a minute, and though she still kept that smile glued to her face, her eyes betrayed her. They looked dangerous, threatening even. Mad.Â
"You have murdered three hundred and forty four innocent people. Iâm sending you away. You will abdicate the throne effective immediately."
"wHAT?" Valentinaâs eyes flashed, and she stood. "You canât do that Mufasa," she took a step toward him, and lowered her tone. "You know that each and every one of those sniveling door mice had it coming to them," she began to circle him slowly, like a bird of prey. "They were scheming, all of them. And plotting and planningâŠDo you really think Wonderland would last if I left? It would crumble and fall, every last looking glass and chess boardâŠAnd do you think all that madness would stay in Wonderland? Oh no, it will spread all throughout Disney until everything was in ruin. I did what was necessary! I did what had to be done and I will not stand here and be disrespected for my actions I am the rightfUL QUEEN AND YOU CANâT MAKE ME D-â
"SILENCE!" roared Mufasa, sudden and loud enough to make his guards jump. Immediately, Valentina backed away, as frightened as a child.Â
"Y-your Majesty, please, there is no need to get angry," she said timidly. "I was only trying to-I mean I only meant-"
"DâArqueham. You will stay there indefinitely." Mufasa said blankly.Â
The Red Queen shook, tears spilling from her eyes. âThe Asylum? N-no, no my lord I beg you please,â she fell at his feet and sobbed. âN-no forgive me please! It-it wasnât my fault at all it was the Clubs! The Clubs it was those wretched Clubs please forgive me I had nothing to do with it!â
With a single gesture, Mufasa had two guards lift Valentina to her feet. He leaned in and whispered in her ear.Â
"The only reason I donât have you banished and left in the Tung Shao Pass, is that I may have use for you someday," he said fiercely. "But the moment I find that I donât need youâŠ" he trailed off and stood back.Â
"Take her to the dungeons. Sheâll stay there until the storm stops. Then General Li will escort her to the asylum," he ordered, and turned back to the window.Â
"MufasaâŠMUFASA NO WAIT DONâT! PLEASEâŠ.DAMN YOU! IâM NEVER GOING TO THAT WRETCHED ASYLUM YOU NEED ME IN WONDERLAND! MUFASA! MUFASA I HOPE EVERY WILD MONSTER IN MY REALM COMES AND DESTROYS YOU! AND YOUR STUPID, STUPID SON! IâLL GET YOU BACK JUST WAIT! OFF WITH HIS HEAD! OFF. WITH. HIS HEAAAD!â
Valentinaâs screams echoed all throughout the Dunbrochâs castle as they dragged her away. The snow fell menacingly, and Mufasa sighed. He reminded himself to send King Fergus two gifts when this all was over, for their exceptional hospitality.Â
