A wonderful but very sad film about the Xenophobia in 70s Germany. An old German woman falls in love with a much younger Arabic man, and the two struggle against prejudice and hatred to have a tender relationship in a cold and lonely environment.
Conrad L. Hall's cinematography in American Beauty is incredible. The characters are often cast under dark shadows with bright highlights around their silhouettes or eyes, which not only makes them look intriguing and mysterious but could perhaps represent the dark places that many of their minds are at. I particularly love the look of the scene in the garage when it's raining - this screenshot shows the beautiful depth of field with the interior clutter of the garage and Kevin Spacey in the foreground, Chris Cooper in the center of the image and stood where the rain stops, and finally that gorgeous red car with the cinematic rain hitting the hood in the back of the shot.
So much detail in one frame!
