It very much ruined him, it became his entire identity to the rest of the world. He was absolutely hated. He even ended up starring in a Pizza Hut advert that had him wearing a paper bag over his head while people mocked him.

So i honestly cannot accurately describe to you how we all felt for Gareth and his team, when they broke the curse and won that penalty shootout against Colombia.

Not only a massive victory for the team, but also a personal victory for Gareth, who in the eyes of the nation is not only redeemed and forgiven, but now loved and admired.

for his choices as a manager, for his calm demeanour, for his passion, for his humble tone, and not least of all for his kindness and empathy.

Whatever happens now, him and his team has done more than break the penalty shootout curse, they’ve ignited a fire in the hearts of the nation, that won’t burn out any time soon.
