((It has kinda been in hiatus for a few reasons.  One is that shortly after starting it my life got crazy fucking busy, and it’s STILL ridiculously busy! |D Additionally, I’ve gotten distracted by other projects (namely fanfiction) that’ve kept me occupied.  But I still think about King Toriel constantly, and the next update’s been a WIP for like months, so once I get back on a normal schedule I’ll be able to devote more time to this!))

omigosh your King Toriel is amazing and heartbreaking. I'd also love to see more of swaPyrus and Asgore, because them keeping their personalities in this new dimension is a*dor*able (and also help I think I ship them a little at least platonically, poor swap!Paps needs some support here). Either way your art is amazing, thank you so much for working so hard on it for us to enjoy! <3

I'm curious why Toriel would kill humans who came to the underground instead of absorbing the first soul and using it to pass the barrier and contact the humans. I have some theories, but do you already have an answer why she would "meekly" wait, "hoping another human never comes down," as she accused Asgore of doing in canon?

Toriel was convinced that even if she were to collect the remaining souls after that first fallen soul, the humans would just declare war again as soon as the barrier came down, having witnessed how they reacted to her children.  The risk of them seeing her harvesting the souls would have made matters even worse.  She was just as furious and vengeful at the time as Asgore!classic, but much more rational.  She couldn’t risk the extinction of her citizens for the sake of exacting revenge on the humans.

Her waiting for humans to fall was initially strategic.  If they were to keep the reason for the barrier breaking--literal dead children--a secret from humanity, there would be a better chance for diplomacy.  But as time wore on and the blood of these children who reminded her so, so much of Chara kept soaking her hands, she lost her resolve.  That’s when she became similar to Asgore!classic, tired of killing and upholding her duty to her people and constantly on the verge of giving up.

On that note, B is opposed to the human soul collecting, just like Gerson.  She was a member of Toriel’s court prior to the decision, until...

...Actually I kinda wanna draw that interaction.  Hm.  I’m getting so many asks about her past that I should really draw some flashbacks.

Ok so ye I’ll explain further in an upcoming comic.

This is probably already asked... but... Why is it 'king'? Not queen? No?

Yassss, at last, the question has been asked! >:D

There’s a couple different reasons, but the root of it all is actually kind of boring.  When I was little, one of my favorite book series was the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, which were about dragons and unconventional princess and all that good shit.  They were also hilarious.  Right up my alley.

So in the first book, the main character (the “unconventional princess”) befriends a lady dragon.  Over the course of the book, the Dragon King is killed, and a competition is to be held among the dragons to determine the new king.  Princess is surprised to find that her dragon pal is going to compete, asking, “Wouldn’t that just make you the ‘queen?’“  To which lady dragon awesomely replies, “Oh god no, that office is HELLA boring.  Too much paperwork.”  And wham bam, Ms. Dope Dragon wins and is crowned king.

For some reason that’s just always stuck with me.  The idea of “king” and “queen” and “princess” being, like, electable offices that don’t subscribe to gender specifics.  I think it’s a cool fantasy trope to explore.

tl;dr, it’s an homage to a really cool book that you should totally read!

how is asgore doing, toriel? have you ever seen him in a while?

((Just like in canon, the Queen left on preeeetty bad terms.  The difference is that Toriel’s had a somewhat easier time getting over him.  She doesn’t hold out hope that they’ll ever get back together again romantically, but man is she lonely and guilty and just generally regretful about how shit went down.))

Sorry if this is blunt or insensitive...but what do you DO? Give speeches? What your average day like?

((In this AU Alphys definitely sees Toriel as a mother figure, and their training sessions often end with them goofing off and sparring.  And idk if I’ve mentioned this, but yes.  Asgore was the Queen.))

Oh I want to ask! Your majesty, do you enjoy baking? Do you have the time to? (Yeah simple question but I want to get to know the King and what she can do or not in her position, she's just so interesting)

((In this version of the au, Gorey is the baker of the royal family and Tori is the gardener.  She manages to find scattered pockets of time to tend to her flowers, and she has small gardens throughout the underground to grow plants in every climate.  Thanks for the ask! :D))

I just love the who King Toriel thing and the story you're making. What more, Underswapped Soriel is more if not just as cute as they are in the canon version. Ahh! I can't want to see more :DD

How are your interactions with Sans? ((My gosh, this is so adorable! I can't wait to see more!))

((As Toriel’s story progresses, her feelings toward Sans will change and develop, but for now she honestly doesn’t know him too well!  So enjoy this carefree adorkable king from before all the nasty time anomalies, cuz she ain’t gonna be like this forever.  She gun get saaad.))

Part two of the King Toriel junk I’m working on!!  If it isn’t obvious, I’ve swapped Gerson with the Snowdin shopkeeper.  I’m not sure what her name should be, but for now Tori just refers to her as “B.”  Ignore the ridiculous inconsistency with her design plz

Fun fact about Tori in this AU:  She likes to put her hood up in public, thinking that it sufficiently disguises her from her citizens, but everybody totally knows it’s her.  They just humor her cuz they don’t want Mama King to feel embarrassed!

Also, I’ve gone ahead and made a separate blog to keep this series of comics organized.  It’s @kingtoriel, and I’m thinking it’ll also serve as an ask blog (depending on interest).
