Thinking about John and Gale as climbers who meet in Kathmandu where they're stocking up for their respective climbs

John is there with a bunch of friends and Gale is there alone, maybe they meet in a restaurant where John's group are ordering shots and beer towers and Gale is in the corner hunched over a bowl of momos with a book in his hand. John never could stand to see a pretty thing looking lonely so he goes over and during the course of the night Gale tells him he's planning on soloing some remote, rarely climbed peak and something about the hardness in his eyes and the Mallory biography in his hand tells John that he isn't gonna make it back. So he tries to talk him out of it but realises real fast that it's no good so he does what any decent guy would do and decides to go with him, whether Gale likes it or not

Anyway they almost die for each other like 5 times just after meeting, make it to the summit and back (just about) then fuck about it in a tiny tent despite the fact that neither of them have showered or changed clothes in a week, hooray :)
