My film of the year: CLIMAX
There’s been some real gems this year, I’m very pleased with the general direction and quality of the horror genre recently.
I do regard this as a horror, not in a classic sense but it was one of the most heart pounding trips to the cinema I have had in a LONG time!! I felt dread and concern not only for the charecters, but myself, for the first time in a long time I was genuinely wary of what depths the film could reach and wether I was prepared.
Being caught off guard was part of why I had such a visceral reaction to the film so I really recommend going in as blind as possible.
The dread was palpable, I was literally exhausted by the end but in the best possible way. From the soundtrack to the pacing I was totally sucked in from start to finish.
It contrasts really nicely with my other top pick for the year Midsommar. I think I’ve been almost conditioned to expect a slow, more meditative build of dread when I approach more serious presentations of “horror”. Which is why, by the time I reached the “climax” my eyeballs had essentially rolled out of my head.
Between this and Suspiria I’m starting to think there’s a magic sub genre forming. And come to think of it....there’s atcually quite a few examples of the mash up (wicker man, night of the demons, black swan) hmmmm......this is a post for another time.
