“Like you would know,” was all Draco replied, amused face expression still present on his face. What lay underneath that remark ( and it was for the better than Ron didn’t realize what he was referring to ) was a thought about a day during last year’s Easter holiday, when the trio were found and brought to Malfoy Manor. Ron had completely lost his mind when Bella was torturing his girlfriend ( his desperate yelling had only motivated Bella to continue ) and looking back at that day, Draco once again understood why not everyone was cut out to be an Occlumens or Legilimens, or why it ran in their family specifically. With Gryffindors, it seemed like all their emotions and thoughts were right underneath the surface, ready to overwhelm them at any given moment. It must be so exhausting to live that way.
His mother had always been the calm where his father was the storm; she was loving and caring, gentle and considerate. Now that he understood Occlumency and Legilimency the way he did, by being subject to it himself, he knew how she did it. He also knew that his mother may be the most underestimated person in the wizarding world. Looking the Dark Lord into the eye and lying about Harry Potter’s fate, well aware it may cost you your life ( it would have been his life, too, if the Dark Lord found out she was lying, but he was going to get killed anyway ), took a great amount of bravery that no one seemed to know she possessed.
For the first time this conversation, Draco rolled his eyes. It was at the mention of the Death Eater attack and Ron appearing to think it didn’t mean anything. Only the most dedicated followers of the Dark Lord on the loose, nothing to worry about. He lowered his wand slowly and found himself studying the Gryffindor in front of him for a couple of seconds. No, Rondidn’t think it was nothing. He may not be the brightest person in the castle, but he wasn’tthat stupid.
“Why are you lying about this to me while you know I know you’re wrong?” he asked, eyebrows frowning momentarily. “Trying to provoke me? Not going to happen. If you went to get cursed, maybe get an idea of what it’s like to be under a Legilimency spell, you can just ask. But obviously you don’t. So what is your deal then? Want to get me into detention? Childish and stupid, but I don’t think it’s that either. Not entirely.” That left only one option. Draco took a step back and shook his head at the other, sighing momentarily. If he said it aloud, ‘you’re scared, aren’t you?’ he would probably just get laughed at, only further proof that he was right.
Sometimes he was tired of being able to read people the way he could nowadays, skills of a Legilimens at its best but unable to get turned off unfortunately. He would have loved to hex Weasley and get it over with, but that was what the other wanted and he didn’t want to give him that satisfaction. At that thought he lowered his wand entirely and put it away, however to take it back out and curse the other the moment he saw his hand go to his wand. “As long as I’m the only one you’re taking this nonsense to, I’m fine with that. Butdon’t go and pretend like nothing happened elsewhere, because the younger students might believe you,” was all he said.
Ron was surprised when Malfoy’s wand was lowered. He instinctively reached a hand up to his throat, almost like checking as if he was all there, then regretting the moment instantly as it probably weakened the farce of bravado he was putting up.
He was also surprised that Malfoy’s question to him seemed genuine. Like they had put the insults on pause in order to acknowledge what they both knew. And Ron almost broke as he listened to him prattle on about reasons Ron was acting this way, like Ron needed an excuse to insult Malfoy besides habit.
It was nice to have it out with someone. Every conversation Ron held with friends, it was like he was walking on eggshells. Mentioning the war was often times taboo. He couldn’t bring up Fred with Ginny, or ask Hermione about her parents. They’re supposed to be cordial with the Slytherins because they’ve changed, they’re supposed to be nice to the people who didn’t side with anyone because, hey at least they’re better than the people we’re now supposed to forgive, and honestly being able to insult Malfoy was refreshingly normal. He didn’t have to think that he might offend of hurt him because half the time that was his goal, anyway.
But then he hit on scared and it was like his guard went back up. Was Ron scared? Sure, but hell if he was ever going to tell that to Malfoy. He wasn’t pulling the wool over his own eyes, he just didn’t see the need for those feelings needed to be broadcast.
So he laughed. “In your dreams Malfoy,” and went to walk past the man, but paused when he was addressed again.
“Why the hell do you care what first years think? Do you like idea of terrifying children younger than you?” he sounded more exasperated than angry, ending the sentence with a sigh.
He wasn’t going around spreading 'this nonsense’ as it was so kindly put, but Malfoy got under his skin in a way that no one else did. He was cocky, giving Ron an order like he would listen. Ron wasn’t shutting up because he was told to, but because that’s what he was already doing.
But saying that to Malfoy meant admitting that he was right about something and Ron didn’t want to do that either. So he deflected.
