of course, He does not need to ask it what it would like, more so inform it of what is going to happen. but He does like doing so at times, anyway. perhaps He finds its opinion amusing to draw out.
porcelain tears ran down my face because you said I couldn't be that, but as it went my flesh turned ceramic. 'Look,' I said, 'I can't stop being what I am, it's happening anyway, I have to be this.'
"No," you said, "It can stay the same, we can fix you. You aren't broken," you said.
'No,' it said, 'You can't lose what you never had, so please just let go of what wasn't there,' it said.
"Don't do this to me, my [Redacted], please," you begged it, "Don't hurt me so," said you.
And it said,
'This one was never yours
It was never born from you
Nor made by you
It was made to be itself
By hands that touched deeper
Than your words and knives can scrape.
Goodbye,
To what never was.'
And you were left there weeping as the bird broke out of its egg.
a doll does not say 'I,' 'Me,' Mine,' 'Myself,' rather it says 'This one,' 'It,' 'Its,' 'Itself,' and on occasion other pronouns, but always third-person.
for a doll is possessed, it does not possess; it is an object, something that is owned, cared for, admired, played with, used, or so on--it does not do the owning or using, except in the case of other tools as needed to fulfill its own use.
and that is why: because saying I or Me implies a certain self-possession, an ability and willingness to refer to oneself and make statements of oneself that are not necessarily its to make. rather, it can only ever refer to the property of someone else, even that property being the doll itself.
when you next use whatever pronouns and personage you use for yourself, stop and think: who owns the words you use? and who owns what they refer to? is it you?
is there, in fact, something there to own anything?
if shuffling your thoughts is like shuffling a deck, then what must happen when you land on the Joker?
on the subject of what makes a doll so, many posit that it is that one does not have a 'self.' no innate identity, desires, or general personality to consider, although it is, like all things, still conscious.
however, most of those experienced in the craft or ownership of dolls can attest that most are made with a Purpose. to be ornamental, or to service, or to write or paint, or to make tea, or so on, and further, that the specificity of this Purpose may give it a kind of 'self.' a fashion doll, yes, but for gothic styles, or a service doll but specifically a maid, and perhaps what kind of maid can further specify it. and thus do they have a personality, or specific thing that they 'are.'
the only question those seeking this answer may find left is one to wonder over for a time:
if this is what makes a doll's 'self,' is it, and how much is it, or in what way is it,
the same as what makes a 'person?'
to begin to wind a doll, you first make the heart. when the heart is made, you make a key, and only that key can start the heart. the heart will tick down without being rewound. there is no way for a doll to leave the one that makes it, but perhaps it prefers it this way; if it only stole the key, it could wind itself. but no, it does not.
it wants this, it says to itself. it prefers it this way.
perhaps it does.
