“I don’t mind mine charred, but it needs to be from sustained production, not ray gun zap. Think warm heat, not broiling.” It’s hard to imagine being a fire lady and not always think about it. But Kimi seems to spend more time thinking about rocks and car crashes that turn you gay. (They'd just finished watching the latter video, or trying to; it didn't live up to the thumbnail.)

"Cracker's still good, though. Lemme..." With a bit of the wrapper, Riley scrapes off the carbonized remains of a loyal soldier marshmallow. It's still way too hot through the thin film of protection, but it would be embarrassing to stop halfway through. Unlike what she does, which is put her thumb in her mouth to soothe the heat. "...Ow. Okay. Round two."

Did she burn herself? Riley didn't have to trouble herself like that. She could have taken care of it. Eyes shift as she thinks about offering to at least soothe the burning pain of her thumb, but perhaps Riley would reject that offer., seeing as she had already found comfort in her own method. Did sticking your finger in your mouth really help at all?

"I wasn't sure about how flammable these were. Let's try like this instead." She sticks another marshmallow on the skewer---which she's handed back to Riley---and cups her hands around it. When she removes her hands, nicely toasted marshmallow is revealed.

did she know ? did she understand him ? in moments like these , where he felt the overwhelming urge to regret and run away , flailing his arms and letting his sleeves fly in hysterics --- he simultaneously wanted to reach out the most . he can't readily tell whether or not this too was another one of kimi's gracious courtesies . she wasn't a fool , and so it was never so simple to fool her . but guilt still writhed out thick and unpleasant from the thought that he was the one responsible for flinging her into cautious word games ; intrepid echoes .

the foot of his cave . her figure ; her warmth . starlight , firelight , gently set down without the accusing point or brutal intention of exposing a coward-liar . yan qing swallows and frowns , but his brows twist and set in a way that could only confess their speechless understandings . looking at kimi , and only kimi , still steadily ignoring every faceless inch of his reflection , he slowly nods . at least before her , there was such a thing as confession .

' do ... you want to ? ' his skill with such things like makeup , though antiquated and nigh entirely shed from disuse , surely still retained some miraculous ember of capability . ' i mean , do you really want to ? if it's me --- i don't mind having anything done to me . but i don't think i could do anything to you . ' he couldn't . bearing the thought and potential to witness himself and another , as well as the influence of himself upon her and her form ... the ends of his lips lift again . so do his brows in a gentle , albeit contradictory expression of sorts . watching her , he can only let out one small , tender laugh , his eyes lonely and wanting . ' --- yeah , i see . you've always been amazing , but it's different for me . '

from his hands to his face to his everything . ' when you wear makeup , you just get even prettier . but i need to cover everything up . ' every inch of skin , every square centimeter of sincerity . ' if ... you think you can do that . ' accepting the challenge of making a hideous ghost ( feel ) less repulsive . ' --- sorry . maybe it's better if we just ... do it instead of talking . '

Teeth click together. Irises touch the corners of her eyes. There is a tick of annoyance, but she's unclear towards what. She whips around, abruptly facing her back to him.

"I'm offering to share my lip gloss with you, and you're still asking if I want to?" Hands pick at things on her vanity, some set back into place and others placed on a tray. "Oh, but I suppose you're someone I should be straightforward with, so there's no room for doubt---reasonable or unreasonable."

She looks over her shoulder; back at him, silver-like eyes clear and sharp. "I do want to. I really, really want to. And I want you to want to, too."

She turns attention back to her hands, moving one to open a drawer and pick out a couple more things to place on her tray. There's a pause in her movement. Then, she finally stands from her cushioned seat and makes her way over to him. Without a word. Without a sound---until items on the tray shift and clink against one another when set down beside him. She stands before him; right in front of him, head tilting this way and that way, as if making her assessment of him. A single blink. Her hands start lightly brushing at the hair framing his face, gathering it together in parts before clipping it back and out of the way. And then, ever more gently, fingers tilt his head back. Another blink.

"Oh. Your eyes really are pretty." As if it had only just been confirmed to her. They really were. Had she ever told him so? She imagines it's what birds see when they fly over dense forests and lush fields on a fine, spring day. "They're very...," eyes roll up momentarily before meeting his again, "green." (As if it were profound observation and not stated fact.) Tip of her finger hovers near the tip of his eye lashes. "Your lashes, too. They're pretty."

And with need to state those surely obvious things out of the way, her attention shifts. Not away from him, but to a stronger focus on her task. She picks up one of the larger bottles and dabs a cotton pad against its opening. "I'm going to start by cleaning your face."

She starts at his forehead, lightly dabbing cool liquid against his skin.

"In the literary world, so as in the real world." Then, as if an afterthought, "your highness."

And then staring at her---quite intensely, one might note--- she adds, "It doesn't only apply to heroes, either. It applies to anyone seeking to improve upon themselves. Even princesses."

     ⌜ 风. ⌟ ▌ ── AT FIRST, SHI Qingxuan thinks the last dregs of a hangover ( not the worst one she's had by a longshot, but a hangover nonetheless ) have caused her to mishear Kimi. Kimi doesn't mean that, right? It's a metaphor. Right?

      Propping herself up on her elbows with a grunt, Shi Qingxuan levels Kimi with her best 'I-am-both-concerned-and-aghast-and-curious-but-mostly-concerned' look. "That sounds like you're saying you think you're only good dead, you know!? Which isn't true. You make for a lot of good things. Why choose fertilizer?" A pause. "Does that taste any good?" Another pause. "This is seriously morbid." Another another pause. "What kind of flowers would you want planted in you?"

Her head tilts, eyes fixed on the face of dear friend. Eyes fall to the side in pensive attempt. She fails to understand how her words could incite concern.

"Should I have phrased it differently?" She plucks petals from her flower and offers them up; brushes them against Shi Qingxuan's lips. An invitation to brave forming her own opinion over Kimiko's habitual snack. "I think my corpse would make for lovely blooms. Does that sound better?" A pause. Head tilts again. "Is it really a morbid thing?"

She lays in the grass. "But isn't that how it goes? From dead things, living things; from ends, beginnings. It is something to look forward to. That my end give birth to something as pretty as summer hydrangea, or sweet as oranges. Maybe even dandelions for wanderers to cast their wishes with."

I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like there’s this amazing creature that we’ve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we could’ve coexisted with it, but it’s trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and that’s sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.

It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because it’s scary. I don’t have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.
