"Ah…I guess I did misunderstand. My mistake." That was…still very strange, but Naoki decided that pointing it out wouldn’t do that much good.
This was the most excited Naoki had seen Higashikata yet, and it was over a sandwich. Then again, these sandwiches were absolutely fantastic. “Mhm!” she replied, chewing and swallowing a bite. “I’m definitely going to come back here.”
Naoki listened intently to Higashikata’s story, becoming more and more confused with each word. So this guy had no memory? How sad. But what was all this about sharing his body with two people? It was true that his eye was two different colors, but that didn’t prove anything. Even though she was skeptical, Naoki decided not to press further on that.
"Honestly, I was never meant to exist."
That statement made Naoki’s chest feel heavy for a second. What a horrible thing to think about oneself. Naoki wanted to believe that everyone was put on this earth for one reason or another. She swallowed another delicious bite of her sandwich, then spoke.
"I don’t know if it means anything," she began, nervously digging her fingernails into her skirt, "but you were the first one to approach me since I came to Bunkyo. To be honest, this is the first time I’ve been able to hang out with someone other than a family member in a long time. So…if only for that, I’m glad you’re here."
She wasn’t able to look at him until she was done speaking. It was embarrassing to say something like that, but this conversation really had been important to her. Even with the awkward bits, Naoki was glad she had been able to hang out with someone without any guilt or fear of any consequences coming from it. She’d really needed something like this.
But now she didn’t really know what to say. Maybe she’d gotten a bit too serious there. She sipped her water and wondered if she should change the subject.
Hearing Naoki say that, he went quiet for a minute. He tilted his head down, mulling over what she had said.
"...Thank you," he finally said. "You have no idea how much that means to me." He turned back up towards her, what appeared to be a slight smile on his face. "However, I wish to continue pursuing. No matter what it takes, one day I'll discover who I truly am." The man with the split irises leaned back, his eyes focused on something else off in the distance.
"I... might be overstepping here, but I consider you a great friend in return. Even if just the fact that you were willing to give a complete stranger the time of day." Finishing his sandwich, he crumpled up the wrapping paper in his hands, before aiming at a trash bin to the left of his seat. Distance three meters... height is sixty centimeters... With that, he threw the balled up paper, it landed perfectly through the opening.
"I'll wait until you're finished, so until then... Anything about you you'd like to share?"
I’m me…! I’m definitely here right now! The me that’s thinking right now… is definitely me!

This song basically screams Gappy. From his despair at not actually being a ‘true human’, his fear of never knowing who he is, his feelings of hopelessness when he’s alone, to his hope to one day finally be able to learn his name. It’s all kinda there in this song.
This is for when he’s having his bouts of introspection, questioning his existence and his motives. It’s also used whenever he’s feeling frightened, desperate, or any other such emotion.

Heavens Divide by Donna Burke
Originally, this was inspiration for Gappy’s first backstory, which has become AU at this point. In it, there was one person who decided to give himself up to the fusion which created Gappy in order to protect someone, but also leave a clue that would lead Gappy to that person. This was kinda represented in the lyrics:
“I will see the choices within my hands How can we ever protect and fight with our tiny souls Let me shine like the sun through the doubts and fear Do you feel the storm approach as the end draws near?
When heavens divide
Time will come to softly lay me down Then I can see a face that I long to see And for you, only you, I would give anything Leaving a trace for love to find a way
When heavens divide"
Now, however, I use it for inspiration in scenes where he shows any form of… compassion? Or really, any kind of emotion for others that he begins to care for. It doesn’t really represent that, but I guess it’s become habit.
There is a similarity, though. He is willing to do whatever, even give up his life, for any one person he becomes attached to. Since he thinks anyone that would give him the time of day must be someone irreplaceable to him.

Everything this Higashikata was saying was just…creepy. Naoki was beginning to wonder if accepting his offer had been such a good idea. He had to know that a man offering to lie on top of a girl was inappropriate, right?
"I…I think I’d be crushed," she replied with a nervous laugh.
What was throwing her off was that he said these things without an ounce of irony in his voice, as though he truly was serious about what he was saying. Could it really be that he simply didn’t know any better? What a strange person.
Naoki thanked Higashikata for the sandwich and the two sat down to eat. He hadn’t been lying about how fresh it was. It and smelled absolutely delicious. Naoki eagerly took a bite.
"Ah, it’s delicious!" Quite the understatement. It was possibly the best sandwich she’d ever had. Naoki already knew she’d be a regular here.
What was that? A smile? That was the first time Naoki had seen Higashitaka smile during this whole outing. He didn’t seem like an unhappy person at all, though. He was just not very expressive. They had that in common.
"So uh…tell me about yourself." Wow, that sounded like a line one would use on a first date or for a job interview. Naoki knew, however, that Higashikata wouldn’t pick up on that. She was incredibly curious about the guy. Exactly what kind of person was he anyway? What was his story? He clearly wasn’t what one would call ‘normal.’
"You'd be crushed?"
He looked at Naoki with a puzzled look. Was there maybe a miscommunication at some point? Perhaps it'd be better to explain himself. "I'm afraid there might be a misunderstanding, Naoki. I've always wanted to have a sleepover, and I want someone to sleep on top of the mattress of a bed while I sleep under it. The added pressure might be comfortable for me... I can't sleep unless I'm under the mattress."
Biting once again into his sandwich, he gave another soft smile. It wasn't simply the flavor he enjoyed that caused his outburst; he enjoyed the very feeling itself. He felt... alive. "It tastes amazing, right? It's great, right?" He asked her with childlike enthusiasm.
"So uh…tell me about yourself."
Settling down, he continued chewing as he pondered her question. Swallowing quietly, he answered, "Isn't that something you ask in a mixer or a blind date? Anyway, I'm currently working part time in a convenience store next to the apartment complex I live in. The lady who owns the store also owns the complex, and she kindly let me stay there if I work in her store." Pulling out a bottle of citrus tea, he drank from it to clear his throat. "Apart from that... I have no recollection of who I even am. No memories at all... That's why I want to make them."
He leaned his face in closer to Naoki, willing her to stare him in the eye. "You've probably already guessed, but I'm not quite... normal." He pointed towards one of his eyes as he admitted this.
"You see my irises? There's a joining." He touched his cheek, slightly pushing down to emphasize his eyes. "One side is colored light blue. The other is colored hazel. All of my body belonged to two people."
"About three months ago I was found like this... I have no memories, I have no past. Even the body I possess is borrowed." His voice became softer as he explained, almost melancholic, regretful. "Honestly, I was never meant to exist."
the mysterious case of gappy, the quadruple sphered wonder
❀ ———————— Alisa listened closely, her head nodding from time to time to illustrate such. When he finished speaking, her eyes widened a bit, as if she was thinking of what to say. However, she did manage to inquire something, ❝So, your memories…have possibly vanished, maybe it was there at a point?❞ If only she could access such information, maybe it would help the male alot. Unfortunately, she couldn’t serve that purpose.
Though, upon shaking the male’s hand, she smiled, drawing it back and placing her arms against her side, ❝Same to you, Mr. Higashikata, I…believe you said you were lost, yes?❞ She asked, turning her back to him to lead the way, ❝The navigational structure around here can make one rendered lost at a point, but, I have studied the direction to and from the Spica Dorms from this location…if that is where you are heading.❞ She responded, her voice light and still of a soft nature.
Still, there was something he had said that made her stare back at him once again, ❝Nothing more than a placeholder? It…may not be of much help, but I believe the name is fitting on you.❞ Alisa’s words were sincere, she felt sorry that the male’s memories (if once there) were no longer retained, but she would indeed try to be of assistance to him if he needed it.
❝I shall lead us back now.” With those words, she began to walk out of the garden, looking back occasionally to see if he was behind her.❞
"All my memories prior to a single event are nonexistent. I'm afraid they might not have been there before that," He explained all that he knew of the memories he had. Any attempt to trace back something that could bring back his memories had been fruitless.
He listened to her intently as she explained what she knew of the area they were in. So then she was headed to the Spica Dorms. If he followed, then he'd be able to easily find the high school from there. Would be pointless to place dorms far away from the school, he thought. He was about to walk up beside her before she suddenly turned back towards him.
❝Nothing more than a placeholder? It…may not be of much help, but I believe the name is fitting on you.❞
"I... thank you..." Jousuke scratched the back of his head at that. He didn't know why but... having a name fit him made him feel happy. Like he was that much closer to having an actual identity. In fact, he felt elated. It was then he decided that this Alisa was genuine in her motives.
"You're a good person," he said, before falling back in line. He decided to pick up his pace, walking up beside her after she had looked back in what seemed as assurance that he was still following.

Dainty little hands placed themselves on her knees as she bent down, her long hair pulled to one side down her left, hanging out in front of her as the water from the ocean dripped down her skin and her dress. She giggled and her eyes lit up at the rhetorical question of calling her an angel. Oh, if only he knew that she was indeed one and she was sure to see a very fun and great reaction. But she had learned that simply saying that she was an angel just for the sake of it, even if it was true, made many people seem reluctant to believe her. To many and most, her words were like child’s wish, a mere child’s imagination of her game. Nope, but rather than bring that up on their first meeting, Raine decided to simply smile.
Her eyes twinkled as the corners of her lips lifted, watching as he only continued to speak without giving her time to speak in turn. Question after question followed and her eyes gleamed bright light before it faded back to the ethereal glow that she normally had. While his heart bore no memories, she could see everything that his physical form of his soul had went through. His heart and soul is often what most people consider one and the same but Raine saw them as two different things that are connected. Heart represents the emotions one can feel to people and the environment around them while the soul is the encompassing being that allows them to bear that heart. He passed out before she could even answer his question and the many others that came after.
“What a funny man!” she exclaimed after he passed out. “What should I do now?” Raine hefted him onto her shoulders and began the climb and walk back to her little home, feigning ignorance for his rather stark naked state. Once there, she dropped him onto her bed with a blanket on top before venturing out to find something for him to wear. She eventually found a pair of worn jeans and a black graphic tee. For some reason, she saw him wearing a sailor uniform would be more fitting but she didn’t want to venture into town yet for one. So these clothes would have to do. She supposed that the people who left them there was some beach-goers who forgot them. Luckily, they were the funny man’s size!
She folded the clothes neatly with a pair of boxers she managed to buy from the local shop. Now, all she had to do was wait for him to wake up but in the mean time, she was going to have some fun while she recovered! But first things first! Food!
And then she was gone again.
With food in hand that she managed to scrounge up to cook, the sun had just begun to set. That was when she heard the beginnings of someone waking… oh! He’s awake!
”Are you finally awake, nii-san?” she chirped cheerfully, coming over toward him as she crouched beside him.

Darkness. It was nothing but an empty void. Nothing but his thoughts; his consciousness. Within himself, he searched for anything. Anything at all, yet found nothing. It was strange. He was aware this was a dream, a vivid dream. Yet it was a dream about nothing. Who am I? The question was the only thing that echoed inside the hollow. Despite there not being any reason to, he was frightened. Afraid.
His first dream was a nightmare.
What felt like hours passed before he began to feel himself being pulled back to the outer world. He lifted a hand to rub his eyes, noticing the sound of sheets ruffling from the movement. Opening his eyes, he looked up towards a roof. Looking down, he saw he was on a bed, tucked into a quilt. Out a window in the room, the sun was setting down. How did he get here? Did someone help me?
Finally, it clicked. Everything that happened just before he passed out. That girl... Had she really taken the time to find him proper bedding? "....." Pensive for a bit, he wondered what this feeling welling up inside him was. "Ah..." It was gratitude. He felt deep gratitude for everything she had done.
”Are you finally awake, nii-san?”
He looked back towards her familiar voice. Familiar... She was knelt beside the bed, bright eyes observing him. Slowly, he lifted his upper torso up to rest on his right arm in the bed. Once again inadvertently answering her question with another. "...You helped me?" More of a statement of disbelief than a question, really.
"...Thank you." You didn't leave. You didn't leave me alone, and not even that. You were willing to help me, without even knowing who I am... That's all I can think how to express this... "Thank you, Miss..." He didn't know her name. He didn't know his own name, but learning hers felt more important at the moment. "I'm sorry, I never did catch your name."
Trying to get up out of bed, he finally realized he was completely naked. So that's what the clothes beside the bed were for. "Ah. I'm afraid I'm not in a proper state of dress... Or any state of dress, for that matter."
Thinking for a minute, he wrapped the quilt around his waist, before finally sitting up on the bed. He was about to speak once more--
GRRRUMBLE

Sleep together!? “W-wait a minute! How did you get to that!?” Seriously, this guy’s mind was a mystery. What kind of person would just say something like that out of the blue?
Although the comment had been beyond strange, Naoki decided not to let it bother her too much. It seemed either this guy spoke before thinking, or he simply didn’t understand what sorts of things were inappropriate to say at what moments. The ‘sleeping together’ thing aside, though, he did have a point.
"I guess you’re right though," Naoki (said), "but I think if someone’s really your friend, they’ll forgive that stuff. After you’ve gotten to know someone really well, you can do whatever you want and know you don’t have to be embarrassed around you. They’ll accept you no matter what."
What was Naoki even talking about? Sure it worked that way in manga, but she didn’t know a thing about friendship in real life. “Sorry, never mind. I guess that’s more what I hope it’s like.”
They entered the bakery, and were greeted by the incredible smell of freshly baked bread. Naoki listened as Higashikata explained how the bakery operated. “I see,” she muttered as she looked over the menu. He’d said he would pay, right? Naoki looked for something fairly cheap.
"Ham sounds good," she said.
Listening to her outburst towards the sleepover idea, he realized maybe his friend had been right about how others would react.
With a tilt of his head, he listened intently to what she explained 'genuine' friends would behave like. So if someone trusted another enough, they could forgive the other's faults within reason? Perhaps maybe there would be a chance to experience the added pressure of another!
"I see." He scratched his cheek. "So that would mean that if we trusted each other enough, you could try laying on top of me? I've tried chairs and books, but they don't give the best amount of pressure I'd like. I'd do you a favor in return, since that's what friends do, right?" His strange and confusing thought process aside, he genuinely hoped to make a good friend through this.
"Alright, I'll get a roast beef one," Gappy said before he ordered them, paying the cashier and handing Naoki her sandwich. Unwrapping it, he immediately took notice of how delicious it looked. The bread was still warm and soft, the meat sliced thin and fresh from the deli down the road. Quickly biting into it, he shouted out.
"Amazing!" The most emotion he had shown to Naoki.
"It tastes just as great as last time!" Last time having been yesterday's lunch.

❀ ———————— Lexicons caused Alisa to avert her eyes to the male, a smile still fixed upon her features. Hands placed in front of her in a gracious, polite manner, aura of harmless radiating off of her. ❝It is alright,❞ she started, ❝I was just studying the area of my surroundings. I am not angry.❞ Her tone was soft and light, as always, even to the most intimidating of people—fortunately, the other didn’t reek of intimidation, so she may have not had anything to worry about.
❝Learn about yourself? Are you…missing information?❞ The maiden inquired, countenance switching to one of concern and confusion. Maybe it was because she knows all too much about that.
❝Ah, that may have been a bit too personal of a question, please, forgive me.❞ She placed her arm out, tilting her head, extending a greeting.

"Don't worry, it's not too personal of a question," he tried to reassure her. "I'm not sure if missing information is a proper description. It might not have existed in the first place." Learning of his origins, the result of a strange fusion, he began to fear he never had memories to begin with. "Things like tying my shoes, the date of the Meiji Restoration, who Nikola Tesla is, they all come naturally to me, yet..." A slight pause. "Of myself, I know nothing. My name, my favorite flower, if I am a sailor or not, I can't even begin to guess..."
He carefully eyed Alisa's outstretched arm after her introduction. Tentatively, he reached out, softly shaking her hand before letting go again. That was the first time he ever shook someone's hand. He wondered if he did good and if he should reward himself with some macaroons later.
"Pleased to meet you, Miss Bosconovitch. My name is Jousuke Higashikata. Well, technically it's nothing more than a placeholder." He added with a soft, slightly amused smile.
"I see..." His thoughts drifted as she mentioned being new to the place. Mainly, he wondered just how far away she was from, and if the strange way she worded things had anything to do with it.

The vibe here was overbearing with new hopes, promises, beginnings, deteriorating her loneliness that she once let inhabit in her heart. With such grace, tulip-toned locks fluttered in the wind as she walked along the plethora of colors that sweetly bombarded the area. She stared up at the sign, which read “Koshikawa Botanical Gardens” then smiled, speaking to herself, ❝Directional senses indicate that this location is an extension to Spica Academy.❞Which, brought her to the realization that this place was attached to her new residence, this brought more joy to her; she knew it, she would like it here. I want to attend school. This thought hadn't come out suddenly. Through weeks of trying to piece together his past; to find his own identity, he finally realized one of the quickest ways to accomplish learning more about himself was going to school. There he could learn exactly what skills he possessed academically, and maybe even find a vocation for himself. Might even discover more about his personality, aside from his blatant love of mitsudango and teddy bears.
He'd heard they gave exams to determine what grade level a person was, and had decided that today he'd pay Spica High a visit in order to take it. He had come prepared, already picking out a placeholder name, Jousuke Higashikata, and age, 19, to register under. Of course, being himself, he'd forgotten a minor detail.
Namely, directions on how to get to Spica. He had no troubles with navigating himself around, he just had the ditzy habit of not remembering to ask for directions. Standing around wouldn't really help much, he already knew the general area of the high school, might as well wander about until he stumbled upon it, as he was habitually to do.
