But it had grown in him, like a seed in the darkness, quietly sending out roots, until now, just now, one pale tendril cracked the surface and came into the light.

“I want to bring you back,” Vash said. “I want to try, and if I can’t do it… I’ll let you go.”

Silence, at the edge of the orchard. Even the bees seemed to pause in their labors.

“Vash.” Wolfwood’s voice was thick with some uncertain emotion.
