I have no idea how visuals slipped my mind so much seeing as Studio Moross do so many and I’m so influenced by them. The Disclosure stage is overwhelmingly huge and acts as a good backdrop that allows their shadows/set up to be seen by the audience. I think it’s so cool how simple and random visuals can be. Movement and energy definitely seem to be important regardless of what type of music is being played.Â

I was looking for more live visuals and found this article on the increasing importance of visuals at live shows. The article connects the visuals to making the event a show. I don’t know why it hasn’t dawned on me earlier to think about visuals. Visuals help create a show especially for DJs as they are often fairly stationary at their gigs as opposed to bands and musicians who have more flexibility to move around. So for DJs especially, visuals can be a perfect way to instil more movement and energy in their performance.Â

NOT MINE. I’m a big fan of Annie Mac’s branding so when I was looking through some of the visuals for it I found these visuals for one of her shows. (Annie Mac is a DJ) it just sort of dawned on me that visuals for bands and DJs have an incredible amount of freedom. They just have to be something to capture the mood. Some parts of this look like really short moving image experiments and then they have been applied to have a purpose. The cool thing about visuals for music is that they are the backdrop so not everyone’s focus is on them. So there’s less pressure but they are still incredibly powerful. Especially on massive stages that Annie Mac plays on, the screens behind her are phenomenally huge. So those images are setting the tone of the event. They may not be the focus but they do have a lot of influence in the overall feel of the event.Â
This is the box I sent to D&AD. I couldn’t make the real packaging I wanted in time so instead transformed the inside of the parcel I sent to the judges with the prototype in it. Hopefully this will stand out from some other entrants who perhaps just packaged their work in a more traditional way. I wanted another chance to show the judges how the game could look and give them in idea what it would be like to open the game. It’s still obviously just a prototype but I thought of the box as an opportunity to show the judges more about the game and try to sell it a little. If the judges get to this stage of assessing then they are interested in my game so decorating the inside of the box is an extra chance to show off the visuals.Â

THE FINISHED VIDEO. I’ve added in the hand clip and tweaked the end section a little. I’m pretty pleased with this video considering the whole thing has start to finish taken 3 days with 2 shifts at work in between. I so almost gave up with this project because basically all I had was an idea and 3 days left. No solid visuals for a logo or packaging and no idea how to do the presentation video or R&D images. I did know that if I gave up I’d kick myself so much on Monday so I was just winging it the whole time making the video. I’ve learnt a lot about animating though and completing such a huge task in such a short time and to an okay standard has given me some much needed confidence. I still have to do the R&D images and finish the packaging. I think the style of the video has definitely set the style for the packaging naturally which I’m happy about.

A screenshot showing how much I’ve edited and clipped the audio to fit. There were a lot of pauses I cut out. I would have preferred to have a touch more time between clips but the 90 second time limit is really not long to explain the game. I wanted to show the expansions in the video as well but there literally is only time to explain the rules of the game so I’ll have to put that and the packaging in the R&D supporting material later on.

I think this works nicely and will separate up the text heavy end section.

The visuals for the ‘how to win’ section is definitely weaker than the rest of the video. The rest of the video has visuals matching the audio and they change regularly. I feel currently the end kind of loses the attention of the viewer because the visuals are a bit static, boring and it looks a little rushed. So I’m going to have a tiny clip for when the voiceover says ‘once the first player has played all their tiles...’ and have a bird’s eye view of a hand with tiles one by one disappearing until they have none left. It’s easy to do and I feel like the end section is missing some illustration rather than just traced type. So this is Becky’s hand holding some tiles. I’ll just draw the tiles and then delete one at a time for each frame.Â

Again, there was a clunky part in the voiceover. At the end when talking about players being able to steal the trophy it just felt a bit broken so Steven and I re-recorded that section.

There was a little awkward part in the voiceover that felt too clunky so I asked Steven to record it again and we smoothed over the sentence. This sounds much clearer.

Added some background music to liven up the video a little. I found some royalty free music from a website Ellie showed me. I just wanted something light and not too intrusive because I don’t want there to be too much going on. I think this song is pretty upbeat and not too cheesy considering it’s royalty free.

I found a horrible buzzer noise which is perfect for when the timer goes off. It tok a while to find a royalty free one but I found a Stove Buzzer noise and just cut the audio to last a few seconds.

First try at matching audio to the animation. Had to cut a lot of audio and alter speed of the animation clips but this is the first version. Some of the audio such as the ‘with trophies!’ bit at the start I’ll maybe switch to a happier version because it sounds a bit dull.
I had to improvise a little at the end because there was much more audio than visuals for the ‘how to win’ section. Still quite glitchy though.

I asked Steven to slow down the voiceover and pause between clips to make it easier to cut when editing. I also asked him to ever so slightly tone it down because some of the previous clips were a little parody game show host and we agreed that was a tiny bit too much.Â

Some of the clips are a bit fast but I’m expecting to have to cut the audio in Premiere to slot it into the audio anyway.Â
