Design Proposal
The visit of HUB Studio was my first time experience the real VR headset. The world that I experienced was real and vivid, then I come up with the idea that making the use of this sense of reality to design a virtual accompanist system. I will describe the design proposal as follow.
Design Concept
It is common that many children are scared or feel lonely when stay alone. The reasons for this situation are various, for example, most children do not have siblings but their parents are too busy to accompany with their kids, these children are my targeted customers for this product. My concept is essentially design for solving these problems, such as that child cannot sleep alone or they are afraid of staying alone, because these are main concerns for busy family and child psychologist. There is no doubt that this is also suit for the lonely elderly.
In brief, the concept can be described as a VR application which help users to see the virtual companions in order to relieve loneliness and fear. Firstly, this product will create a virtual situation for users. Parents can record their video via this application, for example, they can transcribe their actions when they are sitting with their children. Then, when they cannot accompany with their children, kids also could enjoy their time although they are alone. For example, they just need to put on the device, like an application of glasses, which could display their parents’ virtual figures for them. Hence, they can see that their parents are accompanying with them. I hope this function could help children to overcome their feeling of anxiety. Secondly, besides recording the real people, parents also can put some virtual characters into the videos which are recorded in these applications. For example, many kids believe that the superheroes are existing and adored them as the goddess. Therefore, making use of their idols may easier to help them to fight with scare. Thirdly, this product also allows running the applications from third platform. There are many bedtime story applications in the app stores. In future, children will not only listen the stories from the app, but also can experience that heroes are the story tellers.
The ideas above are my main ways of using VR technique to educate or treat some children mental problems. In addition, there are several similar applications which are adopted by psychologists like a therapy for curing psychology problems. Psious Toolsuite is a mobile platform application that using goggles and immersed 3D world experience. For example, putting the patients in the virtual environment that they scared, when they are suffering that feeling, doctor can guide them how to deal with the anxiety. However, this application is based on the Goggles. For virtual reality system, one of the key elements for better user immersion is the fidelity of computer generate images. I think that we can combine virtual world with the real world together. Therefore, the device which I need is a VR headset, but like a glasses, because the headset cannot impact users to look at the real world.

Lab visit 4
The HUB Studio is the final lab we visited. Deb brought several Global goggles last class, although the goggles were not as cool as the VR headset, we were quite enjoy for the VR game on the mobile phone.
Eventually, this Monday afternoon, we could experienced the VR set – Oculus Rift and Unreal Engine interface. The Oculus Rift is a “virtual reality head-mounted display”, which will be relesed in 2016, and created by the conpany Oculus VR. The idea of the VR headset has been imagined for neally 20 years, and the prototypes of it almost updated every year. By now, it is a demo tool for the people that use to develop more VR games and experienced test. Oculus Rift is just a virtual reality peripherals to the PC, meaning it would work with well designed VR games to plug in. The gaming system is working with the Unreal Engine. This is a free virtual reality game development tools made by game developers.
Firstly, the VR artist, Wesley Heard shown us how he used 3D Max building 3D medeling which is a real house model. Everthing in the software seems vividly and can be used in interactively. Maybe that house will show up in some game scenes in the future. Good 3D assets alone are not enough, working with appropriate dimensional sound effects and music can enhance the 3D experience.
After that, Nathan Corporal introduced us some knowledge of recording and editing sound. Some audios will be zoom recorded by recorder, then REAPER is used for editing sound, finally the FMOD can help developer manage and integrate the sound logically. Then some students have put on the head phone experienced the sound effect that made by surround sound from random direction. Consequently, the sound effect not only helping to build a 3D game environment, but also enhance the sense of immersion.
Finally, Wesley allowed us to try the game demo on the Unreal Engine, such as Showdown, Colosse, Dread Halls and Nighttime Terror. This is a rare and funny chance.
Lab Visit 05: Virtual Reality Part 2.
Today we visited HUB Studio to experience Oculus Rift VR Worlds for the first time.
Hub Studios VR Artist and Honours student, Wesley Heard, started off by showing us all how he constructs 3D assets in 3D Max and then introduced us to the Unreal Engine interface.
Then the HUB Studio Sound Designer and Honours student, Nathan Corporal, introduced us to recording and editing (Reaper) sound for 3D Audio integration in VR (FMOD).
We then got to try out the Unreal Engine 4 demo, Showdown and other works such as Colosse, Dread Halls by Sergio Hidalgo and Nighttime Terror by Mark Schramm... and others. Such fun!
This was our last Masters session for this special unit. The Lab Visits were a wonderful experience and I can only hope that the students were inspired by the access so many wonderful people gave us to their studios, technologies, projects, designers, developers and researchers.
And a massive thanks to all of the students of the MCI IVD program at QUT. I learned a great deal from you all and very was reinvigorated as a lecturer by your energy, enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and creativity throughout the semester.

Seeing beneath the skin
It’s not always easy to find a vein under a patient’s skin, especially if they have a darker complexion. This device, called the VeinViewer, solves that problem with augmented reality.
First, the device scans a patient’s skin using infrared light. By capturing and processing the reflected radiation, it identifies the locations of blood vessels and projects a bright green light onto the surface to highlight the where they are.
The resolution can be set so high that even the valves within veins as small as 0.22mm across can be seen, making finding a site for an injection a little less painful. There’s also promise for its use in the treatment and diagnosis of varicose veins, and aid in transfusions and blood sampling.
