ACTUALLY, two clueless individuals would be much better. The last thing Saya needs to do is to sway in to traffic - while getting hit by a car wouldn’t put her out of commission per say, it would still be incredibly messy. Having someone to escort her could prevent that.

The wooden weapon he’s been graced with for over several months now has struck him as a mockery on many levels, but it has held together despite his practice sessions with it -- if he cannot have a real blade, then whatever he has must serve to keep his skills sharp regardless. 

He’s practicing a quick-draw when the woman finally approaches him (although he realizes full well she’s there before she speaks), and stops to tuck the wooden fake back under his side.

     Mikleo’s been wandering around the streets again, but for once not without a goal. The passing of time has been so off that he doubts he knows how long he’s been in the city, but nevertheless, he… still doesn’t know where he’s supposed to be staying. He looks around the street cautiously before sprinting across at the highest speed he can muster, not wanting to run into another car going at imperceptibly high speeds. Who would have thought looking for some form of transportation would be so hard?

     He sees another person, and though he really thinks his communication abilities are shot with how little sleep he’s gotten (none), he’s not above asking for help. Especially seeing as he’s not even sure how this city is organized, let alone where his apartment is. “Excuse me.” He addresses the young man in front of him. “Do you know how to find your way around this city?”

The fact that he feels like he’s been gone is what’s bothering him – Touya feels like he’s been absent for a long time, but if the date is right and he isn’t imagining things, then no, he’s been in this city the entire time. Which feels: impossible? improbable? unbelievable? and he can’t put his finger on what’s wrong, besides the flood of memory that comes to him.

Yes, he remembers what happened, and it’s unpleasant, to say the least. But – there’s nothing he can change, not right now (and the apology he needs to make to a certain someone will have to wait).

For now, there’s someone asking him a question. He almost doesn’t hear them, as off in thought as he is.

<<Well enough. I could give directions or -- >> It’s unseemly for him to be so distracted when engaged in conversation, but there’s so much he realizes he’s unable to do here now, when the rest of their group – sans one, as far as he knows – is back home, facing the end of the world.

“Heartfelt” reunion

It was strange to hear his junior speak to him this way, no, it was something that Kenji had not sought behind him at all. Not here, not at this moment and most certainly not after what they had been through. Although he was certain that Touya wouldn’t fight him with this pathetic excuse for a sword, he hadn’t expected him to be so lenient about the situation at all. Perhaps the situation this city put him had an effect on how his fellow perceived things.

     So he hadn’t written anything after their master’s passing had he..?

With a soft smile on his face, the senior nodded in understanding to his juniors words. They were sound and clear Of course he shouldn’t forget his desire for vengeance: Giving that up would be foolish at best, and a death wish at worst. His words reflected this sentiment.

          “There is no need to let go of your grudges, Touya-kun. As a matter of fact, my humble self would personally cut you down if you permanently gave up on your duty for sentimentalities such as these.”

He took a few steps closer to his junior, smile still plastered on his face, despite having just spilled those words. For now this somewhat extraordinary peace was something that he did feel like. An opportunity to innocently poke at Touya-kun again, have a moment to reconnect with his old self. The swordsman patted his fellow on the shoulder, while walking past him.

           “Well then, let us find a place to sit down peacefully and take our time, rather than standing around here in the middle of the street.”

Slowly he started moving into the direction of a small nearby cafe, it didn’t seem to busy either. An ideal place for idle banter and bittersweet recollections of what once was, or so Kenji thought. With a curt gesture he pointed out their destination and calmly made his way over there, his eyes closed.

He doesn’t know how to take his (former, he can’t forget, former) senior’s actions combined with his words except with a healthy dose of unease and wariness. No matter what either of them say or do now, it doesn’t change anything. The promise of revenge still burns deep within his chest.

It’s confusing.

Feeling the other give him a tap on the shoulder while passing by – at least, he thinks, he manages not to shrink away on contact -- he realizes they have, in fact, both been standing in the road. Although the area is, for the most part, deserted (and they’re actually fairly close to the sidewalk, to boot), it’s probably just asking for something horrific to happen.

He’s slow and more than a bit hesitant to follow his (former) senior, but there really isn’t any reason to believe any harm will befall him, at least not yet. There’s definitely some remnant of propriety left in him, even if it isn’t readily apparent; there won’t be any sneak attacks from this man.

Touya trails behind the other as they walk, briefly uncertain as to where they’re going until the other gestures to a small café on the corner. Close up, it seems highly… inappropriate, far too modern for his tastes, but it is mostly empty, with few others than the tired-looking employees within.

He waits for the other to sit before doing so himself.

He wouldn’t expect anything less from Iai Banchou, the interim leader of the Kongou Banchou fan club. That wasn’t to say the man deserved the praise and admiration: he most certainly did, but it’d be a dark day before Yuu’d admit it anytime soon. Their resentment of the kidnapping is near similar, but they express it in clearly different ways. 

Obviously, because one knows how to take a joke.

A roll of the shoulders and chuckle, eyes sliding to the other’s face at the bold declaration of his apparent invincibility. Charming as the idea was, he wasn’t so sure he was fond of the idea of following the big man after everything was over. He had plenty of other stuff to worry about.

“I wonder…do you have a shirt with his face on it, too? It’s alright, I won’t judge~.” A bout of teasing is always needed, especially with the way he leans towards the other’s face as he asks. He simply can’t resist the urge to poke fun. It’s both in his nature, and a form of distraction.

The mockery is dismissed, an answer not being extended. Instead he opts to straighten up with his look never failing, just gauging Iai’s reaction out of the corner of his eye. Now that he’s piqued curiosity, he could shut his mouth just to be mean.

But he’d throw the dog a bone.

“It’s the cultural sector. Right up your alley, isn’t it? It has things from every place the people around here come from. Traditional, modern, stuff out of videogames or manga.” An extravagant wave of the hands. “And the best part for you?”

A disarming smile.

“There’s hardly any legs to distract you.”

It’s not a matter of taking a joke when there’s nothing humorous being said. Iai throws a glance sidelong into the ether, anything to avoid meeting the eyes of this detestable man who insists on invading his personal space – which happens to be several meters in radius when Hikyou Banchou is involved.

He knows he shouldn’t respond to his jabs, and yet the urge is irresistible despite his self-control.

<<A shirt, really? Do you really think Kongou Banchou would care for something as mundane as that? It would be so unnecessary… Not that you would understand.>> It comes out more biting than he imagined it to sound, but truly, their leader is at the forefront of his mind now, and he can’t tolerate joking about the man, not from him.

He’s grateful when the other straightens up, putting just a bit of distance between them both – every centimeter counts, really – and returns his gaze straight ahead, stare unflinchingly fixated forward so as to avoid eye contact as they walk in silence for a few, blissful moments. Iai has almost forgotten his original question by this point, but the response he receives only reminds him that yes, he cannot stand this man.

So he stops, turns to face the other.

<<Your sense of humor is vile, and your ability to assess the gravity of a situation and perhaps think about what you say even worse. When I begin to think for even a moment I might be able to work with you, you prove otherwise.>> A breath, then: <<It must be one of Kongou Banchou’s few faults, tolerating your presence.>>

He doesn’t even bother to offer any thanks for the bit of information he has received.

Touya-kun had a point.

He had been too wishful about the quality of these swords. Too willing to disrespect his own abilities for cheap thrills. Now wasn’t that funny? He was being corrected by his dear junior. It was downright hilarious to Kenji, he couldn’t help but stifle some snickering at his own foolishness.

“Well then, what do you propose, Touya-kun?”

He lowered his wooden sword as he spoke, putting extra care into stuffing it away before continuing.

“Do you wish to relive the old days until we have our own weapons back? Do you wish to take a step back and have a moment where we are simply Kiryu Touya and Isaki Kenji, instead of Iai banchou and Kenpei banchou?”

That was the first time he dropped his new title on his old fellow. He had taken it up with great pride and acted in accordance to it. How funny that both of them took up something so very… traditional. Speaking of which, perhaps he had some kind of idea.

“Old days… Hehe… How sentimental. Say… Do you still write haiku?”

As if he had to ask. He knew that Touya would still be doing it, old habits and hobbies die hard. Perhaps the amount he has written would have increased when Kenji had left. Kind of funny, he used to read those haiku a lot. Their master praised them too. Too bad he couldn’t read them anymore, hah.

“Perhaps we could bide our time with poetry, just like the good old days. We will have that fight when we are capable, but for now, will this suffice?”

He doesn’t know how to react to this display of… well, he’s not sure what this is. A twisted combination of sentimentality and a temporary peace offering all in one? Touya had, in truth, expected the other to attempt to fight him regardless of what was said, given how callously he had cut down their master several years before. 

And, as much as it is distasteful and disgracing to admit to himself, he realizes that he is not prepared to fight this man yet, even if they are technically on even footing, so to speak. Hearing the other speak with such a strangely mocking – yet evocative of nostalgic yearning for the past – tone of voice makes him realize he is, perhaps, a bit too soft. He hates it so very much. But – 

<<’Clouds appear / and bring to men a chance to rest / from looking at the moon.’>> The words fall from his tongue smoothly and with a familiar ease in spite of his misgivings about his senior – former senior’s temporary change of heart.

<<I haven’t written anything in all the time since you left, but I can still recite it properly, as we were taught.>> He pauses, hesitating for once as to what to say, before continuing. <<What I meant was that we could stand to call a truce for now. I cannot pretend you did not… kill our master, but to take a break from pursuing vengeance for now would be -- >>

-- his fist unclenches the handle of the wooden weapon he’s been gripping so tightly, falls to rest at his side –

<< -- Well, it would not be so terrible.>> He thinks of the metaphor he attempted to draw, relaxes his shoulders, and inhales deeply. When the clouds parted and the opportunity shone through for him to take proper vengeance for their teacher, he would do so. But now, he needed to wait.

He couldn’t not attend. For a multitude of reasons, of course; while parties weren’t really the scene he usually attended, it offered a bucket of opportunities for the Banchou to both learn and have some fun. Just who would he be if he passed up this kind of chance?

Especially when he could get away with it.

Being stripped of all weapons didn’t sit right, but he could deal with it in a place he wouldn’t really be in danger. After all, not only was his mask and hat gone, leaving only an unfamiliar (except to those who frequented a certain cafe) youthful face to the public eye, but everybody else got the same treatment. One hand adjusts the white flower pinned to his breast, a most likely stolen expensive suit covering his person as he scans the area for his first victim.

Once one of interest caught his eye, he’d look for other people in their midst before approaching with a pleasant smile and an outstretched hand.

“I don’t suppose you’d care to dance?”

It has been a struggle as to whether or not he would come to this ball, but eventually he gives in – that, and a nice older couple who owned one of the shops in the cultural district had lent him a more formal sort of kimono for the occasion – if only by the reasoning that, perhaps, it will be a better alternative than spending the entire evening alone. Still, there’s that sense of tradition and obligation and perhaps a tiny bit of pride nagging at him that this is, inevitably, going to be a waste of time.

The collar of his borrowed ensemble feels stiff and itchy, as if it had been in storage for far too long, and faintly smells of moth balls. Tugging at it is both unseemly and unhelpful, so he stops. The next thing he tries to occupy himself with is finding a drink and then perhaps sitting down to admire the starry atmosphere of this strange, oversized party, but he doesn’t get very far before being approached by –

Well. It’s the waiter from that café. He definitely remembers him, if not for the embarrassment of the experience then for the somewhat admirably decent service he managed to provide. Thinking about being in that place makes his face ready to redden, so it’s better to focus on what’s at hand instead.

<<So I guess we did end up meeting again.>>

<<…And excuse me? Did you say ‘dance’? With you?>>

“I can’t stand getting filth on my gem,” Pearl groans, nose scrunched in disgust. If there’s one thing she especially loves about Beach City’s smaller population, it’s the ease of keeping the place much, much cleaner.

So far, he’s been of little use to just about everyone he’s come in contact with thus far -- quite frankly, he’s tired of feeling useless -- but for this passerby, a young lady, he’s got just the thing. Iai removes the cloth from one of the folds of his hakama.

The notion of taking time to purchase something that used to be so readily available made him wince and shake his head slowly. It came with the notion of staying in the strange city, something he hadn’t yet come to terms with.

“…Potentially.”

In reality, no. He wasn’t fooling himself—with his reduced magical powers, choosing the wrong mark would probably result in pain and suffering and a shoddy reputation for him. Not to mention a thief would be remiss to admit their intentions. “One dreams of having an adequate weapon for self defense. Surely you can sympathize with that.”

‘Potentially’ is a word of little comfort, a qualifier used by those who are prepared to lie and cheat and need little more than to leave themselves an opening with which to do so. 

So, no, he’s not liking anything this man has had to say to him yet -- barring that last bit, which does hit a sore spot, more than he’d like to admit. He’s a swordsman without a proper sword, which is... more an embarrassment than anything, really. He folds his arms across his chest, head cocked just the slightest degree to the side.

<<I can more than sympathize with such a sentiment. Even the most shoddily-crafted iron weapons would be less of an insult than these. And yet...>>

           ` ☂ : █ ▬ ·Only interested in people who were powerful, it was only natural for him to ignore the individuals that failed to meet his standards. Even though most of his abilities were no longer in his possession, it didn’t bring his spirit down or brought about concern. If most of the citizens around him were in the same situation as him, then that meant they were on the same level. It meant he could still fight to his heart’s content. While pondering about how he was going to search for future opponents, he spotted a man with a sword on his hip. It immediately captivated his bloodthirsty heart.

           Approaching him with a smile on his face, he took a seat next to him.·“It sure is hot today isn’t it? I can’t walk around in the sun for too long, so this is extremely bothersome for me. Say, how about you help poor little me in my hunt for an umbrella.” Speaking in a friendly tone, he continued smiling at him while waiting for his response. His intention wasn’t to befriend him, but to gauge how strong he was.

Though he minded the sun little, Iai still found himself shielding his eyes with a cupped hand in lieu of the shade of a tree overhead. It gave him little opportunity for taking in details on the actual physical appearance of the approaching stranger, but his other senses remained sharp enough for him to tell quite enough as it was.

And, as it was, that smile was a bit offputting. Still, it was not his place to judge someone else so quickly when they lacked killing intent, was it?

<<An umbrella? It isn’t likely you’ll find something like that lying abandoned -- unless you meant to purchase one?>> He thinks of the few assorted yen coins tucked away in his hakama, and adds, perhaps hastily, <<I might be able to help.>>
