“Anyone else bored?”
“Extremely.”
Fred and Kelly glanced around Dove’s living room, the Spartan’s eyes creating shapes out of the ceiling pattern.
“There’s plenty to do if you’re open to it,” Linda remarked from the kitchen, staring at the ingredients in front of her as if they were parts to a weapon of mass destruction.
“I’m pretty sure Dove would come back to a pile of ash if Kelly went in there.”
“Oh, like you could do better? You ONLY know how to make piecrust to feed your freakish obsession with apple pie.”
“Which you’ve HAPPILY eaten, several times—
“Now, now…”
*Dove’s voice carried softly across the room as she and John walked through the front door. Dove’s cheeks sporting a very light blush as John took her scarf. The slight chill of autumn followed them before John closed the door behind him.*
“Welcome back, lovebirds.” Kelly greeted.
“Was the apple cinnamon latte any good?” Fred questioned, the smell of spices reaching his nose. “Smells like a candle.”
John nodded, setting down the small bag of apples he and Dove had picked up on their walk home. “Wasn’t too bad. A bit strong cinnamon-wise.”
“I thought the caramel apple latte was better, but the doughnuts were absolutely worth the stomach ache I KNOW I’m going to have later,” Dove added, shucking off her coat that John then snatched to neatly hang up. Dove squawking in light protest as she turned to grasp at his earmuffs in retaliation.
“You should just get married and put us out of our collective misery.” Fred joked good-naturedly, hiding a snicker as Dove made a flustered noise and John shot him a half-hearted glare.
“What are you all doing here, anyway?” John questioned after he’d removed his coat. Kelly huffed in response.
“Forced shore leave, command must’ve had a realization that after… twenty or so years, we should be afforded some time off.”
Dove’s eyes brightened, coupled with a growing smile as she poked her head out from the kitchen, “Really??! That’s great!”
“It’s torture.”
“A bit dramatic, Kels.” John joked wryly, earning a crumpled piece of paper tossed his direction.
“I can only have so much nothing happening at once, Chief…. They're giving us two weeks… two. I’m going to end up committing a felony or eat all of Dove’s ice cream.”
“And that’s why I always keep it well stocked.” Dove chimed in.
“Fred was in charge of finding us something to do, but so far all he’s listed is to go through Dove’s movies and pick a few.”
“I’m trying my best, I’m used to organizing reports, not vacation itineraries.”
John crossed his arms, leaning against one of the counter supports, a hint of a smirk on his lips. Dove walking over to Fred to survey the list he was slowly working on.
“Oh, there are some good ones on here.” Dove praised. “Water parks are always fun, depending on how much leeway you guys have, maybe you could take a trip to your earth and do some sightseeing!”
“I think I’d rather watch those…. Dinosaur movies.” Kelly protested, Dove chuckling softly as she watched the female Spartan.
“I think it would be cool to see what Earth is like six hundred years from now. I wonder if floating buildings are a thing yet.”
Fred paused for a moment. He, Kelly, and Linda all making eye contact with one another before a twinkle appeared in his eye.
“That settles that then.” He nodded, looking up at Dove with a grateful smile. “Thanks, Dove.”
“Huh??”

“I don’t think this is a good idea, Fred.” John lightly protested, adjusting the civvie outfit he’d been given. Fred shook his head lightly.
“Why not? It’s just a bit of sightseeing.”
“And what if someone asks her for ID? She’s not from… here.”
“I’m pretty sure you don’t need an ID to go to a museum,” Fred assured, glancing at Dove, who was already looking at the towering, multi-layered city with wide eyes.
“Holy HELL, this reminds me of Star Wars…. LOOK at this!” Dove quietly exclaimed, taking in the sight of traffic passing overhead in what looked like perfectly synchronized aerial patterns. The streets were filled with civilians going about their daily lives, from businessmen to street vendors. It looked like something out of a sci-fi fantasy.
“I feel like I’m in some sort of fever dream.” Dove blinked, giving her arm a light pinch. Fred’s lips quirked up into a smile as he shot John a look that didn’t bother trying to conceal the smugness underneath it. John returned it with a deadpan before moving over to Dove’s unoccupied side, reaching for her hand, which he grasped gently. But the way he squeezed it afterwards told her he was feeling a little nervous. She returned the squeeze firmly, a silent assurance that she was fine.

“Holyyy shiiitttttt.” Dove’s jaw dropped as she and the Spartans entered a museum. The building looked massive on the outside, but inside? She felt like a teeny ant. Right as they walked through the turnstiles, she was greeted by a massive replica of what looked like a frigate-style ship that had a wide set of stairs that led into the building. Kelly and Linda waving from their spot against the wall. Dove waved, tugging on John’s hand as she took off like a kid on a sugar high.
The museum was dedicated to the complete history of humanity, meaning that for Dove, several centuries were waiting for her to discover with wide eyes and awe as she walked through an exhibit that showed humanity branching out into the stars in the late half of the 21st century. The prototype of the very first Translight Engine that enabled humanity to leave the solar system.
“This is incredible…” Dove breathed, watching a short video of the very first test of the engine; the quality of the graphics alone was cutting-edge in comparison to the current graphics she was used to.
“I can’t even tell if this is made of pixels or some sort of ultra crisp projection.” She whispered, John’s lips pulling into a ghost of a smile.
“Still looks grainy to me.”
“Oh my god– shush, shush ALL of your face.” Dove giggled, reaching up to gently poke his cheek. “You and your ultra crisp, 35K graphics.”
John tilted away from her poke with a good-natured chuckle, his deep voice carrying in the large space they stood in. “Not my fault, I have standards.”
“Dove…” Fred called, motioning her over to a virtual exhibit where you could design….. Micro organs???
“You can grow your own… personal, tiny, organs???” Dove questioned, tilting her head, watching with riveted curiosity as Fred showed her how the exhibit worked.
“Pretty fascinating stuff.” Fred nodded, “Useful as hell in a field situation.”
“So does any Spartan walking around have their original organs anymore?” Dove questioned, Kelly stifling a laugh as Fred had to give the question some thought.
“Maybe John? Congratulations, your Spartan comes with all his original parts… a collector's item.”
Linda snickered, Kelly nearly spat her water, and John looked up from the small case he was glancing at with a befuddled, slightly questioning expression.
“Way to make me sound like a model car, Fred.”
“I’m not wrong though!”

“I find it amusing that the first ship to leave the solar system was called the Odessey.” Dove snickered as she sipped on a smoothie. She and John stopping for a snack after her stomach had rumbled. “I wonder if that book is even still around.”
“Probably, I bet there’s an archive somewhere for old literature.”
“Damn, way to insult the classics, love.”
John gave a light snicker, glancing around the small cafe, his eyes alert and scanning. Dove glancing up at him and reaching over to loop her arm around his.
“You don’t have to be so on edge.” She remarked, holding up her cup to him, a silent offer. John lowered his head, took a sip of the smoothie, and looked like he was entertaining her statement.
“Should’ve known you’d go for the mango.”
“Don’t be bashing my…. Third favorite fruit! They didn’t have peach!”
John chuckled softly, leaning down to take another sip before brushing his nose against the top of Dove’s head.
“Don’t let the mangoes at home hear you say that, pretty sure they’ll go bad on purpose.”
Dove gave a noise of displeasure at the thought before bringing the straw to her lips. “Don’t give them any ideas, delicious little traitors.”

“Having fun yet?” Fred questioned as he approached John, both of them watching as Dove dragged Kelly and Linda on the meteor simulation yet again. Dove was like a kid in a candy shop; everything was new and exciting, and an excuse to explore. John hummed in reply, leaning back the entrance to the exhibit.
“She’s not gonna disappear, Chief.”
John’s hand tightened around her smoothie cup almost imperceptibly. To anyone who wasn’t a Spartan, he looked perfectly relaxed, but Fred could see the tension in his shoulders and around his eyes.
“I know.”
“You’re looking at her like she will.”
“It’s a big place, lots of people.”
Fred’s expression told John he wasn’t buying it, but he didn’t comment further as he heard Dove give an excited scream.

After the meteor simulation, Dove found and challenged John to a ship-building contest…. John’s ship won.
“Not bad for a first try, Dove.” John gave her a warm smile as she watched the virtual ship explode upon launch. “Think you had too much juice headed to the slipspace drive.”
“This is a LOT harder than I thought.” Dove grumbled, “And here I thought it would be like virtual Legos.”
That got a genuine laugh out of him as he and Dove left the activity room, his arm subtly draping over her shoulders, Dove slightly surprised by the action, but didn’t comment as they continued walking through the museum.
“This was a good idea, I’m glad Fred managed to talk Linda and Kelly into this.” Dove grinned. “Honestly, I’m shocked he managed to talk you into this.”
“I’m not completely anti-social…” John tilted his head, a slight grin on his face as he looked down at Dove. “Just not my favorite pastime.”
Dove opened her mouth to reply, but paused for a moment when she saw a colorful exhibit. Ride? Something up ahead had a very short line, and it seemed to be a type of lift… like indoor skydiving, but less chaotic. John cocked his head, curious what had grabbed her attention, his eyes drifting over to where she was staring.
“Grav lift.” He explained, staring at the sign from their position. “Looks like it goes to the rooftop or some sort of viewpoint.”
John watched as the information hit her brain, seeing the very second the idea registered.
“Wanna give it a try?” Dove inquired, looking up at him with hopeful anticipation. John glanced around for a moment, taking a silent roll call of the others before giving a nod. Dove’s smile was beaming as she gently pulled John along with her. John gripped her hand a bit tighter as they entered the small line. Several people turning and staring in surprise at the appearance of someone as large as John. Dove, noticing he was slightly uncomfortable, gave his hand a single, hard squeeze. A silent question, a way to check in. John smiled inwardly as he responded with two squeezes in return, confirmation that he was okay. Satisfied, Dove went back to staring at someone who had been staring at John since they got into the line. The man very quickly averted his eyes and stared at something else.
“Rude…” Dove muttered, “Didn’t his mother tell him it’s rude to just stare at people?”
John snickered softly, rubbing small circles on the back of Dove’s hand as they moved up the line. At some point, Fred, Kelly, and Linda joined them. All of them sipping on smoothies or some type of drink.
“Oooo, this will be interesting,” Fred remarked, sipping his milkshake. “Haven’t been on a grav lift for fun before.”
“Probably just some short tourist attraction.” Linda scoffed, sipping her tea.
“Hopefully… this will be interesting.” Fred corrected.
*When John and Dove got to the front of the line, the person working the lift gave them some basic instructions on how to avoid injury, not to do any crazy flips or movements, and that the entire thing would take about ten minutes, and they’d reach the observation tower that overlooked the entire city.*
“This will be fun!” Dove declared with enthusiasm as she and John stepped up. John paused for a moment before stepping into the lift.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Dove questioned once the lift started, the weightless feeling making her stomach flip-flop at first as they began to ascend. John glanced over at her, noting the concern in her eyes.
“Just not used to this. You, being here outside of appearing on the frigates—
A few beats passed between them.
“I know I have no reason to worry, but I do. This— you’re more vulnerable here. Can’t help feeling like I’m breaking some form of time travel law, bringing someone six hundred years into the future…. It’s risky. Don’t want to put you in a risky situation is all.”
Dove’s gaze softened further as he explained. Here he was, out of his element, trying to have fun, but worried about her safety, being, technically, out of her time.
“It’s okay, John.” She assured, reaching for his hands, grasping them in hers. “Though I appreciate you watching my back.”
John grunted in reply, bringing her hands to his lips in a rare show of semi-public affection as he brushed a kiss to her knuckles. The silent: ‘I love you’ filling the space between them as the gravity lift continued to send them upward.
“Wowww!! The energy changes color??!” Dove exclaimed as the particles took on a paler shade of blue, the lights of the museum fading as the light of the outdoors began to greet them. The two light sources began to mix to create a misty sort of—
“It looks like cotton candy… I desperately need this lighting in the apartment.” Dove marveled, her eyes widening as she took in the sight of a light, rainy mist beginning to settle over the city.
“It’s so beautiful…” Her voice was quiet, a little too quiet. John glanced over to see her hand resting against the light particles. “I’m kinda sad I’ll never live to see any of this.”
“You don’t know that,” John replied a little too quickly. “Things could change.”
“I don’t think cities could go from how they are in the early 21st century… to this in my lifetime.” Dove chuckled, her voice holding a slightly melancholy undertone. “But at least I get to see a small glimpse of it now.”

The mist had settled into a light rain by the time Dove and John reached the observation tower, the sudden swell and stopping causing Dove to be a little wobbly at first as she leaned against John.
“That made my bones feel like jelly.” She snickered, glancing back at the exit. “Do they all do the little push at the end?”
“Only the impolite ones,” John replied, giving her a slight smile as he steadied her. “I’m surprised you didn’t get sick.”
“Me too, if I’m being honest.” Dove agreed, watching as a small number of people milled about the observation tower. “On second thought…. Can we get some air??”
John nodded, leading her out to the larger observation deck. The mist kissing their skin with light precipitation as Dove took a moment to breathe, looking up to see the glow of the city underneath the curtain of light rain. The sounds of a small food stand with clinking bowls and muffled chatter from dining patrons faded into the backdrop as Dove made her way to the railing. John, who had been checking on the status of the others and how soon they’d reach the observation tower, turned back towards Dove. His eyes landed on her smaller form leaning against the railing. The noise of everything around him began to fizzle out and slow as he watched her reach out with an open hand, gently cradling a wisp of mist hurried along by a small gust of wind that tousled her hair gently. John’s mind suddenly became quiet; everything else around him insignificant in comparison to the person just a few feet across from him. The person who reached out to tenderly cradle mist and stare at colored lights like they were the stars themselves. The worries and underlying anxieties of earlier fleeting with the sound of the breeze as he simply stared.

“Well, I have to say, this wasn’t too bad.” Fred later remarked as the Spartans made their way back to the rendezvous point. Glancing back over his shoulder to see John who had a sleepy Dove on his back. Her smaller form hanging off him like it was second nature.
“It was…. Fun.” Linda agreed. “Dove ran herself ragged today. I’m shocked she wasn’t asleep by the time we thought about food.”
“It’s Dove and food,” Kelly stated, sipping her tea, the drink still warm, her gaze betraying the fondness her voice lacked as she took in the image of John giving her a piggyback while she napped. Fred slowing his steps to match Kelly’s gait, a glint of mischief in his eyes.
“Did you get the shot?” He questioned, keeping his voice low. Kelly replied with a smirk as she pulled out her phone, showing him the picture she’d snapped when they’d gotten to the observation deck. The moment captured and cemented in memorium of Dove reaching to cradle a wisp of fog.
“That’s going to be his lockscreen for the next decade.”
Guys… what if Fahz lost his leg in an incident involving a Settlement riot? He doesn’t seem to have an issue with Outsiders, but his justification about Settlement 2 and following orders would make sense if something personal happened to him involving a Settlement riot. He wants to be the best, but losing a limb would definitely cause at least some doubt or insecurity about his identity as a Gear.
Or: the less complicated reason he has a prosthetic. He was born that way and bullied growing up because he wanted to be a Gear. And for being Vasgari (he even says his parents never spoke Vasgari around him so he wouldn’t seem different). So now he always has something to prove: that he’s just as capable as anyone else. This doesn’t seem to justify his solidified stance on the Settlement 2 incident tho.
Fahz is arrogant and superficially cocky because he feels like he always has to prove himself. Deep down, he worries he’ll never measure up to the standard of what a Gear *should* be. He dislikes JD because JD is the literal epitome of what a Gear should be and born into a legendary family. JD comes from a family commanding legendary respect, Fahz comes from a family that had nothing as refugees that fled to the COG.
I must confess. I want to put on a scuba suit and take a deep dive into Gears of War lore, especially the newer ones, but I don’t want to go alone. I need someone to gush about Gears 5 with, Fahz needs more lore and it’s driving me crazy! I have no one irl to speculate with 😔
Summary: When you told Sev that caster and counter-caster mental battles were extremely dangerous, you kind of understated your case. Then again, you knew that you were going to have to do it at least three more times. And with each battle, you healed a little less.

“You’ve been quiet,” You feel Sev approach before you hear or see him. The familiar bond is alive and well, after all. And it thrums with silent power every time he approaches.
You’re glad for it. There’s enough power in the bond to keep you standing, at least.
“Just tired, Sev.”
He scowls, and a tiny smile lifts your lips. No doubt he’s already considering all of the ways he can help you be less tired. Sev takes his duty as your familiar very seriously, for all that you’re trying to get it undone.
“Do you want me to make you caf?”
“No, thank you.” You stand slowly, an ache shooting down your spine as you move, though your smile doesn’t waver. He doesn’t need to know that you’re struggling, after all.
However, Sev sees more than you’d like, and his scowl deepens. “It’s not a problem.”
A tiny laugh leaves you as you walk over to him and reach up to press your hand against his cheek. You feel him sigh and he turns his head slightly to press his lips against the palm of your hand.
He’s sweet. In the last six weeks you’ve come to adore him.
But you can’t keep him. He has his duty to the Republic, after all.
Mother Above, though. You wish you could.
“Matron Lily is coming over later today,” You say gently, “She’s going to take a look at the familiar bond.”
Sev’s scowl deepens even more, “She doesn’t have to.”
“...you know she does, Sev. You have a duty to the Republic, and I won’t stand in your way.”
He bristles slightly, “I have a duty to you.”
“One you neither asked for, or agreed to. I will not keep you bound here with magic, Sev.”
“I don’t mind.”
“I do.”
He sighs softly, “I want to stay with you.”
“My door will always be open to you, and your brothers, Sev. Adjusting the bond won’t change that.” There’s something soft in the way he’s looking at you, and you can’t help but lean in to hug him. You really do adore him more than words can explain.
He’s warm as he wraps himself around you, his arms tight around your waist. You lay your head against his shoulder and close your eyes, allowing his strength to support you, just for a moment, and then you pull away.
“When Matron Lily gets here,” You start as you look up at him with a fond smile, “Will you show her to the sitting room?”
“Can’t I just tell her to leave?”
“Sev.”
“Yes, fine. I can do that.”
“Thank you.” You tilt your head back to press a feather light kiss against his jaw, and he almost melts against you at the sensation. “She should be here shortly.”
And, almost as if you had the ability to see the future, the front bell rings. Grudgingly, Sev releases you and turns to head to the front door, and you’re glad for it as a wave a weakness washes over you and you nearly collapse.
You swallow bile as biting pain washes over you. You feel cold, as though you’ve run out into the snow without any protective gear. So long as Sev and his brothers never find out, it’ll be fine.
Everything will be fine.
It has to be.
Sev isn’t sure that he likes Matron Lily. Though, if he’s being completely honest, he doesn’t like most people who aren’t his pod brothers or his witch. But the Matron takes one look at him, and a weird smile crosses her face.
“Goodness,” She peers even harder at him, “That’s quite a powerful familiar bond you have there.”
Sev scowls at her. “It’s fine.”
“Ah, and that would be why my darling apprentice asked me to take a look.” The Matron beams, “It’s fine, it’s what I’m here for.” She pauses and looks around, “Where is my little sugarplum anyway?”
“I’m here, Matron.” Some of the tension leaves Sev’s body as his witch steps into the room. She still looks so exhausted, and her hands are trembling slightly. “It’s so nice to see you.”
The Matron is silent, and Sev glances at her. Then his stomach sinks.
The Matron looks horrified. Her eyes are wide, and her hand is pressed over her mouth. “Oh, my darling,” She reaches out to his witch, “What happened? No, that’s not important. Lay down, darling. Quickly now, I need to see how extensive the injury is.”
“Injury?” Sev asks, his gaze immediately snapping to his cyare and looking over her for any injury. Sure, she had been hurt after freeing him, and his brothers, from the dark magic in their brains, but a quick bacta treatment patched her up.
Didn’t it?
“Oh yes.” The Matron hurries over to his cyare as soon as she lays down, “It’s a magic wound, if you could see the world the way I do, it would be obvious.” She pauses, “She’s, essentially, leaking magic. You poor thing, you must feel awful.”
“I’ll be alright, you don’t have to fret…”
“Nonsense,” The Matron presses a lightly glowing hand to his cyare’s forehead, “Rest now, child. I’ll handle the rest.”
Sev watches as her eyes flutter shut, and he sighs as she drifts to sleep. He wants, nothing more, than to carry her to her bed, and tuck her in. But he has a feeling that it won’t help.
“Was she injured recently?” The Matron asks.
“She said that she had to have a mental battle with someone,” Sev explains, he walks across the room and picks up the small vials that hold his, and his brothers, chips, “These were in our heads, she said it was dark magic.”
The Matron frowns as she looks at the vials, “She’s not wrong.” And then she clicks her tongue, “Silly girl, she’s not nearly experienced enough for this.”
“It was an accident, the first time. She didn’t know about the chip when she started the ritual.” Sev counters, defensively.
“I’m not judging her, silly boy. Every young witch gets in over her head every now and then.” The Matron brings her glowing hand to hover over his cyare’s chest and magic flares to life around the both of them. “However, she shouldn’t have removed the magic from your brothers without contacting the Coven. We would have helped.”
Sev stares at the twisting purple and blue light around his cyare, and he exhales slowly. It looks like the galaxy. “Is that her magic?”
“It is indeed,” The Matron’s voice is soft, “She has a beautiful soul..and...Ah! There’s the bond with you.”
There’s a flash of vibrant red, and then the red expands and stretches until it’s threaded throughout all of her magic.
The Matron laughs softly, “If I were to look at your soul, I bet it would be nearly identical to hers. At this point, the both of you are far too intertwined for me to be comfortable adjusting the bond.” She hums thoughtfully, “But that’s not what I’m looking for…” She trails off, “Ah. There it is.”
Sev watches as the Matron moves her hands a little lower, and the beautiful purple and blue colors start fading into black, though there’s a very thin line of vibrant red standing between the black and the rest of the colors. “What’s that?”
“The black is the magical injury she suffered while helping you and your brothers.” The Matron explains absently. A new color is introduced to the magic array, a bright yellow, that quickly isolates the black, “It seems like you’ve been protecting her from the worst of the side-effects.”
“Of course. I’ll protect her from anything.”
The Matron smiles slightly, “Good.” She’s quiet for a moment, and then pulls her hands away, the bright light fading away until it’s little more than a memory, “There. The dark magic has been isolated. It’ll take time to heal, but she will heal.”
Sev hurries to his cyare’s side and crouches next to her head, some of the stress that she hadn’t been able to hide from him has faded, and Sev heaves a sigh of relief.
“Don’t allow her to use any magic.” The Matron says as she picks up her shawl and drapes it over her shoulders, “I have to call Coven meeting, she’ll be expected to join. Watch for my letter.”
“I’ll let her know.”
“Good.” She pauses, “It was good to meet you, Sev. I’ll see myself out. Keep her comfortable.”
And then she’s gone as quickly as she arrived.
Though, when Sev glances at the chrono, he realizes that it’s been several hours since she arrived. He sighs and rubs his hand over his head, “You’re such a trouble maker, cyare.”
That said, he carefully gathers her into his arms and carries her into her bedroom, gently settling her on her side of the bed. He smoothly changes her out of her day clothes and into her more comfortable pajamas, and tucks the comforter around her.
Then he leans in and presses a feather-light kiss against her forehead.
She groans, and slowly her eyes flutter open, “Sev?”
“Yeah, it’s me.”
“Matron Lily…?”
“She’s left after she patched you up.” Sev lightly trails his finger down her cheek, “She said she’s calling a meeting for the Coven and to watch for her letter. She also said no magic until you’re completely healed.”
“...Yeah, that’s fair.” She murmurs.
“Why didn’t you say you were hurt?”
“Didn’t want you to worry, mostly.” She murmurs, “Sorry.”
“Silly. I’m always going to worry.” Sev replies, before he leans in and presses another kiss to her forehead, “I’m afraid you’re stuck with me for now.”
She sighs, and shifts so she’s closer to him, “That’s alright. I didn’t want you to leave anyway.”

Summary: As someone with magic in your blood, you rarely get to spend time with others. People fear you and what you're capable of. The truth is, as an apprentice, you're teaching yourself magic. And when a Commando answers an ad you put in the local paper, you know life is about to change forever.

“There!” You take a step back from your work table to admire the bottle of blood red ink that you've been laboring over for hours now, “One bottle of magic imbued ink, ready to be used for rune crafting.”
Technically, and traditionally, the ink should be in black or blue. But you've never been a traditional witch, so why would you start now? Plus, the red is so bright and pretty, so how could anyone claim that you were being a bad witch?
“Okay!” You say to the empty room, setting both of your hands on your hips, “I think I’ve done all I can. Now all I need is a volunteer!”
The ink is done, your workshop is clean, and the ritual area has been touched up. And, more importantly, you put an ad in the local paper to try and garner the attention of a potential volunteer.
You just have to wait.
You’re sure you won’t be waiting long. After all, why wouldn’t someone want to be a magic test subject? It’s the best thing ever!
A week later, you’re started to feel a little discouraged. Not only have no volunteers showed up for your totally awesome magic experiments, but also members of the local church have been coming around to try and convert you away from your demon worshiping.
You’re willing to admit, to yourself, that perhaps an ad in the local paper wasn’t the best idea. But, to be fair, the local clergy never cared about the magic thing before.
A sudden knock on the door pulls you from your gloom. Logically, you know it’s probably one of the local ladies here to try and save your soul. But maybe, just maybe, it’s someone here to answer your ad.
So you bounce over to the door and swing it open, “Welcome to the Emporium!” You chirp as soon as the door opens, and before you get a good look at who’s on the other side.
Luckily, it’s not a local lady.
It’s a man. Tall, broad, and heavily scarred. And wearing clone armor.
You tilt your head to the side, “...Can I help you?” Surely the locals didn’t recruit soldiers to run you out of town? With pitchforks and fire and all of the drama involved—
He quirks a single brow, and then lifts a printout of your ad, “You’re looking for volunteers?”
Now, you’ve never been the type of lady who can be wooed by something as simple as a voice. But his voice is deep and gravely in a way that sends goosebumps up your spine, and you fall in love with his voice then and there.
But, you’re a professional. Or, well, you like to pretend to be a professional. So you shove aside your distraction with his voice, and favor him with a beaming grin, “I am! Are you interested?”
He glances at the ad, “It says that you’re looking into protection runes? That’ll be useful, if it works.”
“It will! Because I’m amazing.”
The corner of his lips curl up in a small smirk, “Well, you’re not lacking for confidence, that’s for sure.”
Your grin widens, and you move to the side, “Won’t you come inside?”
He enters your home with no hesitation. But then, if you were as big and solid looking as he is, you probably wouldn’t hesitate before entering places either. You give him directions to your sitting room as you shut and lock the door behind him, before you trail after him.
Honestly, you can’t take your eyes off him.
You’ve never been a small woman. You’ve always been on the bigger side due to genetic factors and the fact that you really don’t like exercise. But, as you step around him and motion that he can sit anywhere he wants, and ask if he’d like some tea or caf for the conversation, you feel tiny while standing next to him.
It’s a nice feeling.
He settles on your couch, “You don’t have to go out of your way for me.”
“It’s no trouble at all, Mister...um…”
“Sev. And there’s no need to call me Mister, just Sev is fine.”
“Sev, then. It’s very nice to meet you.” You vanish into your kitchen and then return with two mugs of caf, “I brewed this before you got here, I just haven’t had the chance to make a mug yet. I hope you like it!”
“Thanks,” He says as he takes a sip while you settle on your armchair, curling your legs under yourself and then you set your mug on a coaster. “I have some questions about this volunteer opportunity.” Sev finally says as he sets his mug to the side.
“I would be more surprised if you didn’t.” You agree, “Ask away.”
“How is this going to work?”
“Basically, I’m going to paint runes on your body with a special ink, and then I’m going to imbue them with magic so the runes take hold. If it works perfectly, then you’ll have a kind of magical protection.”
“And what does that mean?”
“Mm. It’s kind of hard to explain.” You tap your lower lips for a moment, “Basically, the protection runes are meant to shield you from any magical harm to your body, but they also add protection against things like mind manipulation and the like. It’ll also make you more resistant to being moved by the Force.”
“Are Magic and the Force the same thing?”
“Sort of? According to what I’ve read it’s the same power just in different forms.”
Sev nods slowly, “So this ritual, is it going to leave me harmed in some way?”
“No. Absolutely not. You’ll be able to leave under your own power, I swear it.” You pause, “Um, I am going to have to see a lot of you, though. I’ll be painting your arms, chest, abdomen, and down your legs.”
Both of his brows raise, and you feel your face heat.
“I have a towel that you can use for modesty and I swear I’m not asking to be a pervert! I didn’t put it in the ad because I knew weirdos would come to get painted…”
“It’s alright, you don’t have to explain yourself.”
“I do, though. You’re the one who volunteered so you deserve to know exactly what’s going to happen.” You counter, “And if, at any point in time, you want to stop. Then we stop. No questions asked and no judgments given.”
Sev watches you through dark eyes for a moment, and then he smirks, “Alright. How long will this take?”
“Um. A couple of hours. I have to make sure the runes are perfect. But, you’ll be comfortable. But you won’t be able to eat or move much once I begin—”
“That’s fine, I’m used to having to be still for long periods of time.”
“...it feels rude to say good, but I’m actually really glad.” You smile at him warmly, “If you want to follow me, we can get started?”
“Lead the way.”
You lead Sev through your home, until you reach the ritual chamber. The room is several degrees warmer than the rest of the house, to make it comfortable for the people getting runes painted on them. “If you would, Sev,” You start as you head over to your workbench, “There’s a fresher through that door. If you could shower and wash using the shampoo and body wash that is in there? There’s also a basket for you to put your clothes in, and a towel for you.”
You notice Sev glance at the door, and then he nods at you, “Alright. Anything else I need to know?”
“Mm...I don’t think so.” You smile at him kindly, “We’ll begin as soon as you’re ready.”
Sev has to admit, if only to himself, that the little witch is adorable.
There was a moment, when he came out of the fresher with only a towel around his waist, where he thought she was going to faint from how flustered she got at seeing him.
He watched her pull herself together as she guided him on where, and how, to lay on the cushioned ground.
He also has to admit that he appreciates how respectful of him she is. She needed his towel adjusted so she could work, but she asked him if it was alright to adjust the towel before touching it. And before she started painting, she made sure to ask before touching him.
She’s been largely silent since she started working, though. Her gaze intense as she carefully paints each symbol on his body.
Sev had expected the paint to be cold, and had been trying to prepare himself for it, but it was warm. Between that and the color, he almost feels like he’s being painted with blood.
He probably shouldn’t find that as hot as he does.
He, very carefully, doesn’t think about that too much. After all, she’s kneeling between his thighs as she paints the symbols on his legs, and he doesn’t actually want to fluster her anymore than he already has.
“Okay,” Her voice is soft, “And...done.” He watches her pull away from his lower legs, her gaze flickering from one shin to the other. Making sure everything looks perfect.
A pretty smile lifts her lips, and she smoothly gets to her feet to set the, nearly empty, jar of ink back on the worktable. And then she’s kneeling next to his head, her gaze concerned, “How are you feeling, Sev? Do you need anything?”
“I’m fine. This is pretty comfortable, actually.”
“Ha, I’m glad. I’ve been worried about that this whole time.”
She really has no business being so adorable. “So,” Sev says, “What’s next?”
“Next, I imbue the runes with power.” She sits back on her heels, “So for this part, you’ll probably feel a pinch after all of the runes are activated. When I activate the magic, the runes are going to sink into your body and become a part of you. It’ll feel like a shot.”
“Not a tattoo?”
“If I were leaving the ink on the surface of your skin,” she brushes soft fingers against his forearm, next to one of the runes, “It would feel like a massive tattoo. But because I’m trying to bind the spell to you, it’ll feel more like a vaccine.”
“Good to know.”
“Do you need a moment to get ready?”
“You worry too much, witchy.”
She pouts at him, “I just want to make sure you’re comfortable.”
“I’m fine, maybe a little hungry.”
“Well, when we’re finished, I’ll buy you dinner. How’s that?”
“Deal.”
She smiles at him, and then stands, “Alright, Sev. You might want to close your eyes, this will get bright.”
Sev immediately follows her instructions and, for a moment, nothing happens. And then there’s a weird sensation, like static all over his body. He can feel the runes activating on his body, the symbols getting warmer than they already are, but there’s no pain. Not even when the last rune activates.
The the sensation changes, and the static feeling changes into soothing water. There’s a pinch, barely painful enough for him to notice, as the runes sink into his body.
Then the pain starts.
It blooms in his head, near his right temple, and Sev can’t help the grunt or the way his body twitches. And her voice, soft and gentle, “Wait...what is…” She trails off, and then the magic around him changes, “Sev, can you hear me?”
“Yes.” He hisses out.
“Okay, I’m glad.” She does sound genuinely relieved that he can respond, “Sev, listen. This next bit is going to hurt. I’m sorry. I’ll try to shield you as much as I can.”
“What—”
“I know you’re confused, and probably scared.” Her voice is like a wind through leaves, and Sev feels himself relaxing, “But I need you to trust me. I swear to you, I will explain everything. Can you do that for me?”
“Yeah,” Anything more than a single syllable word is becoming beyond him, but he can feel her, the pretty witch, right there beside him.
“Thank you,” The feeling of her washes over him, “Just rest now, Sev. I will protect you.” Her presence turns into a cooling sensation, and Sev surrenders himself to the feeling, sinking into blissful, pain free, darkness.
When Sev opens his eyes again, he’s laying on a bed. Night has fallen outside the window, and he slowly sits up. He expects pain, or stiffness. But, as he moves, he actually feels pretty solid.
“You’re awake,” His gaze snaps to the door, and she’s there. Her hand pressed over her heart as relief crosses her face, “I couldn’t wake you, I was worried.”
She moves into the room, and Sev can’t help but notice the dark circles under her eyes, or the bacta soaked bandages wrapped around both of her arms. “What happened?” To her, specifically, but also in general.
She looks pained for a moment, but she folds her hands in front of her and then bows deeply at the waist, “I’m sorry. I had no idea that there was something like that inside you. If I had, I would have gone about the protective spell in a different way.”
“...I’m going to need some clarification.”
Her hands, which had been anxiously twisting some of the loose bandages around her hands, still. She lifts her gaze to meet his, “There was something inside your head, something dark. When I activated the protection runes, the dark thing woke up and attacked you.”
“That’s what caused the pain.”
“Yes. If I hadn’t been there, if I hadn’t been paying so much attention, it would have killed you.” She sinks into a chair near the bed he’s using, “I am sorry, Sev. I should have done a magical examination of you before we began. This is on me.”
“You saved my life, why are you apologizing for it?”
“Because you never should have been in the position to begin with.”
“You didn’t know there was something inside me that would attack me. It’s not your fault.”
She huffs, “Let me feel guilty in peace, you jerk.”
“No. What happened to your arms?”
She pauses and looks down at her bandaged arms, “Oh. That. When I realized that the dark thing was trying to kill you I...fought it. I don’t recommend it. Caster versus Counter-caster mental battles are mindbogglingly dangerous. I’m lucky that I’m young and healthy or else I would have died.”
“Sorry, the thing in my head was a spell?”
“Um...sort of?” She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small vial, “After the battle, it kind of...fell out of your head. It looks like a computer chip of some kind, though it seems to be a mix of magic and technology that I’ve never seen before.”
Sev takes the vial and lifts it too look at it properly, “How’d it get in my head?”
“Um...well…” She trails off.
“You have a theory?”
“I do. I think it was implanted when you were a kid...or maybe even younger.”
Sev is quiet for a moment, but the chill that washes over him has nothing to do with the cool bedroom, “So, you think my pod-brothers have these too.”
“I can’t answer that without examining them.”
“If they do, can you remove them.”
She’s quiet for a moment, but then she nods slowly. “I’ll have to change things, I can’t do for them what I did for you. I got lucky today, I might not be so lucky next time. But, that said, I can.”
Sev falls back on his pillow, and presses his hand over his face, “I’ll comm them and tell them to come here.”
“Right, yes.” She hesitates, “Sev, there’s more.”
“More? What more?”
“To save you, I had to, um, alter the ritual. Without your consent.” She won’t meet his gaze, “I, kind of, had to bind you to me.”
“...meaning?”
“You do have all of the benefits of the protective runes, but you also have the protection of being my familiar.”
“...the fuck does that mean?”
“Well, there are lots of benefits to having a familiar, but I don’t think there’s ever been a human familiar before, so I’m not really sure…” She trails off, “I am so, very, sorry. I’m going to reach out to some of the more experienced witches I know and I’ll see if they have any advice for us…”
Sev sighs heavily and presses the palms of his hands against his eyes, “You owe me dinner.” And, now that he’s more awake, he can’t shake the feeling that he needs her closer than she is.
“Yes, I know. But it’s midnight and nothing’s open, so how about I feed you three times tomorrow, uh, today.”
“That’s fine. But you’re feeding my brothers too.”
“I can do that.” She stands, “So, um, I’ll let you get some rest…”
Sev twitches slightly, and he swiftly grabs her upper arm, “Where are you going?”
“My room? You’re probably tired…”
“If you leave, I think I’m going to lose my damned mind. We can share.”
She blinks at him, “You want to share a bed? With me?”
“Yes.”
“I...but…” She trails off, and she sighs, “That would be the familiar bond, Sev.”
“I really don’t care what it is. I just, I need you to stay here. Where I can see you.” His gaze flickers to her bandaged arms, “Especially since you’re hurt.”
She sighs again, and then she smiles, “Alright. Scoot over and let me under the blanket.”
Sev rolls his eyes and effortlessly tugs her onto the bed, so her back is pressed against the wall and he’s closest to the door, “It’s safer this way.”
“No ones going to break into my house, Sev—”
“Let me do this, there’s a little voice in my head screaming that if you sleep closest to the door you’re going to die. So suck it up.”
“Oh boy, I need to send that message sooner rather than later.”
“Later. It’s time for bed. You need your sleep too.”
She looks like she’s going to argue for a moment, though she only manages to get half a sentence out before she falls asleep mid-word.
Sev huffs out a silent laugh, she really is adorable.
As he shifts in bed so he’s able to curl himself protectively around her, he can’t help but think several things. One, that she smells like the rain, a really nice scent to fall asleep to. Two, he’ll murder anyone who so much as looks at her wrong. Three, he hopes that the other witches can help him get this shit under control. And four, if she has to turn his brothers into familiars to save them, he’ll probably combust from jealousy.
And, right before he falls asleep, his nose pressed into her hair, he can’t help but think that forever like this wouldn’t be so bad.
Summary: Hardcase has a problem. And the problem is that the new Medical Officer on the Resolute is a thief. What has she stolen? His entire heart.

“Honestly, Hardcase,” He opens his eyes to squint at the white-clad woman standing over him, “What were you thinking?”
Hardcase blinks at her, twice, and then a sheepish grin crosses his face, “Will you be mad if I say I wasn’t?”
She sighs and presses a hand to her head; she’s recently painted her nails a pretty shade of blue that matches his armor. Fuck, he wants to kiss her.
Wait…that might be the concussion talking.
“I wouldn’t be mad, Hardcase. I’ve come to expect this kind of nonsense from you and your brothers.” She drops her hand back to her side, and favors him with the tiniest of smiles, “I think Kix got all of the common sense on this ship.”
“Not all of it,” Hardcase counters immediately, “Rex has some too.”
“The fact that the good Captain is also nursing a concussion suggests differently to me.” She counters dryly.
“Oh, for real?” He tries to sit up to look at the other beds, only for her to push him back down, “How’d you get to be so strong?”
“I’m not strong, Hardcase. You’re just very concussed right now.” Her hand, so warm and soft, presses against the side of his head, “How’s your head feeling?”
“...fuzzy.” He replies honestly, “And a little achey.”
“Well, the pain will fade when the medicine kicks in.” She murmurs, “I’m not sure what’s causing the fuzziness, though.” She leans back, her hand moving from his cheek to settle on his chest.
Logically, Hardcase knows, she’s doing it to keep him from trying to move and hurting himself more. But right now, he’s stuck on the fact that her warm hand is pressed against his chest.
“Wow, your heart is racing,” She murmurs, “You feeling alright Hardcase?”
“Yup! Perfectly perfect!”
Her eyes move from the monitor to scan his face, a doubtful expression on her pretty face, “I think I’m going to take an EKG…just in case. Is that alright?”
“Yeah. Yeah, that’s fine.” Okay, he didn’t mean for his voice to come out that strangled, but he doesn’t think she noticed. At least, she doesn’t look any more concerned.
But, when she favors him with a bright smile, Hardcase swears he feels his heart skip a beat. “Great! Better safe than sorry, no?”
“Yeah. Totally.”
She lightly pats his chest, “I’ll be right back. Try not to move.”
And then her hand, and her warmth, is gone.
Hardcase lifts his head to watch her vanish into a storage room on the other side of the MedBay, and then he turns a glare to Kix, who is shaking from repressed laughter.
“You’ve got it bad, vod.”
He groans and falls back on his pillow so he’s able to drape his arm over his eyes, “Shut up.”
“I can’t believe you agreed to an unnecessary medical test,” Kix continues, a grin in his voice.
“Shut up, you’re annoying Kix.”
“That’s my right as big brother.” He doesn’t have to sound so smug about it, though.
“You didn’t tell me you hired a heart thief,” Hardcase grumbles.
“Yeah, you’re unique in that, vod.”
“Shut up, she’s perfect.” He drops his arm and glares at his brother, “I’ll fight you for her.”
“I’m not fighting you.”
“Cause you’ll lose.”
“No, because you have a concussion, and it wouldn’t be fair dipshit.” Kix lightly flicks Hardcase’s nose, pulling a disgruntled noise from him.
“Hey! Stop abusing my patients!” His heart skips another beat when she returns, a droid trailing behind her.
“Ah, but you see. He’s an idiot, and he needs to know.” Kix replies cheerfully.
“Abuse your brothers outside of the medical bay, Kix.”
“Ah, so I have your permission.”
She rolls her eyes, “I know that they give as good as they get, so I’m not worried. Shoo.”
Hardcase stares at her, his jaw slightly slack, “Did you just shoo Kix?”
“Yeah. He’s used to it.” She replies distractedly as she turns to the droid. “Anyway, the EKG shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes, and then I’ll let you rest—”
“I love you,” Hardcase interrupts.
Across the room, Kix bursts into laughter.
To give her credit, she looks momentarily thrown before a tiny smile lifts her lips, “That’s the concussion talking, Hardcase.” Her voice is very gentle and kind, and Hardcase falls in love with her even more.
“I’ll still love you when I don’t have a concussion.” He counters, “I loved you before the concussion, and I’ll love you after it.”
She looks amused for a moment, and then she sits on the stool next to the bed and rests her arms next to him, “Tell you what. If, when the concussion clears,” here she pauses and holds up a finger, “Fully clears, per myself or Kix, and you still feel the same way, I will go on a date with you when we return to Coruscant.”
Hardcase stares at her, “Clarity,” He finally says, “You’re not just saying this to make me feel better? You mean it?”
“Every word. We’ll go to the Aquarium, it’ll be fun. But only if you still feel the same way.” Her smile widens, “If, when the concussion clears, you don’t love me, then we’ll cancel. With no hard feelings.”
“Deal!”
“Good. Now, I need to attach these electrodes to your chest, may I?”
“Yeah, sure, whatever.”
“So agreeable,” She sounds pleased about that fact, which is all Hardcase wants, really.
And then her small hand slips under the collar of the hospital shirt he’s wearing, and Hardcase can feel his face start to burn with flustered embarrassment.
“Ah, you’re cute, Hardcase.” Her voice is soft, but there’s a tiny smile on her lips, and he thinks that, just maybe, he has more of a chance than he feared.

As The Moon Rises
Summary: When you and Echo get stranded on a planet, he takes advantage of the stunning scenery and takes you on a hike. A hike that turns into a camping trip, as the sun sets when you’re on top of the mountain.
Pairing: ARC Trooper Echo x F!Reader

“I can’t believe that they ditched us,” You grumble, loudly, as you scramble up the side of a boulder, trying to follow the path that Echo is making.
A hand appears in front of your face, and you gratefully take his hand to allow him to pull you up onto the boulder neck to him, “They didn’t ditch us, angel.” There’s an amused smile on his face as he helps you to your feet and ensures you haven’t gotten hurt while trying to climb up after him, “They didn’t have a choice.”
“Yeah, yeah. I know,”
Echo grins at you, mischievous and boyish, as he drops your hand and presses his hand against your cheek, tilting your head slightly so you’re looking at him. “Besides, now we get to spend time together without my brothers looking over our shoulders.”
You make a face, “I could always kick them out of my office,”
“And that would only work for about 30 minutes before someone is knocking again.” He brushes his thumb against the corner of your mouth for a moment, a wistful look crossing his handsome face, “It seems like they don’t want us to have any alone time.”
You lean your head into his touch, “Well, they just don’t want us to accidentally practice multiplication, that’s all.”
Echo looks confused for a moment, and then he laughs and drops his hand, “Well, I suppose that’s fair.” He offers you his hand and you slide yours into his firm grip without hesitation, “I’ll try to carve an easier path from here on.”
“I’d appreciate that.” It’s no secret that you’re not the most physically fit person on the Resolute. In fact, seeing as you’re tech support, you might actually be the least fit person on the ship.
Still, Echo likes you, enough that he has a hard time taking his eyes off you, even in a crowded room, and that’s enough for you.
True to his word, the path that Echo carves up the mountainside is much easier, with a lot less climbing and a lot more weaving. The downside to taking a weaving path, though, is that when you reach the summit, the sun is already starting to set.
It’s kind of a romantic scene, you can’t help but think as you sit on a rock and stretch your legs out in front of you. The setting sun casts a golden glow on the valley below the mountain, and the sky is an array of pinks and purples.
Echo, too, is painted in the golden glow of the setting sun. And you can’t help but compare him to some of the paintings that you see in museums. It’s a silly thought, but you can’t help but think that, like this, Echo looks like he should be royalty.
He definitely shouldn’t be slumming it with some girl from the lower levels of Coruscant.
Echo turns to look at you, a broad grin on his face, and you feel your heart skip a beat.
You love him. You’ve known this for a while, but this is the first time where you really and truly considered a future with him by your side. You always assumed that he would leave you when someone better showed their interest, but right here, right now, the idea of someone better seems impossible.
“You’re staring,” Echo teases, there’s something warm in his voice that makes you feel warm down to your toes. He’s also being a hypocrite because he’s staring at you too.
“You look happy,” You reply.
“I am happy.” Echo walks over to you and offers you his hand one more time. You take it without thinking about it, and squeak when he tugs you to your feet and into his arms, “I’m on the most beautiful planet I’ve ever seen, with the love of my life in my arms. How could I not be happy?”
“Love of your life, huh?”
He just grins at you in response.
“Well, I’m glad we’re on the same page at least,” You add as you reach up and lightly press your hands against his cheeks, your fingers lightly tracing his cheekbones.
The sky darkens, and Echo drops his hand to his belt to activate his flashlight, before sliding his arm around your waist again and pulling you tighter against him. His dark eyes scan your face for a moment, “We won’t be able to head back down until morning.”
You hum your understanding, “I don’t mind. You’ll keep me safe from the wild animals.” You lean up towards him and catch his lips with yours.

Dogma nervously tugs on the hem of his new tee shirt. The whole outfit is new. It’s a simple outfit, a plain tee shirt, and comfortable jeans, and it’s his only civilian attire.
Now he’s regretting that he didn’t break them in before today, but it’s too late to worry about that now.
Quickly, before convincing himself that this is a terrible idea, he knocks on the apartment door and waits patiently. Well, semi-patiently.
There are a handful of civilians who work with the 501st regularly, and of that handful of people, only one or two are allowed on the Resolute when they deploy. This apartment belongs to one of those people.
She’s an IT whiz and, according to her, she’s solely responsible for making sure that none of the computers on the Resolute break while they’re traveling.
She likes to say that anyone with training could do her job, but Dogma’s not so sure he agrees. Oh, sure, any of his brothers probably could do her job. They’re not stupid men after all.
But, in his opinion, she also offers some much-needed morale for himself and his brothers. More himself than his brothers.
She’s…kind. Kind and good and pretty. And when she smiles, it’s like watching the sunrise, and when she laughs it’s like hearing bells ringing.
Dogma is smitten. He knows it.
Which is why being here is such a bad idea. Because he knows that he’s going to say something stupid and offend her, or, even worse, he might confess his feelings and then she’ll know and it’ll be the worst day of his life—
But she personally invited him to movie night, so here he is.
Dogma shifts slightly when he hears the door open, and when he sees her, he almost forgets to breathe.
She’s stunning. Even with her hair pulled in a messy knot, even though she’s wearing a ratty shirt and sweatpants, even though she’s not wearing any make-up. She’s still stunning.
A blinding smile crosses her face, “Dogma! You’re here!” She moves to the side to allow him into her home, “I’m making some pizza for us to share, and some mozzarella sticks.” She shuts and locks the door once he’s in her apartment, “It’ll still be a bit before dinner, maybe about half an hour? So make yourself comfortable.”
Dogma slides his boots off and sets them next to the door, and then looks around. Her apartment is tiny, though he remembers her telling Commander Tano that she lives in a studio. He always thought studios were big, based on the name.
He’s surprised that it’s just the two of them, though. Dogma knows that he saw her talking to Jesse and Kix…maybe they’re late? Or he’s just early.
“You can go ahead and start picking out movies if you like,” She adds as she heads toward her small kitchen, “I have a bunch, the ones that aren’t so good are labeled—”
“Sure,” Dogma heads towards the couch, noting with some amusement that the couch and entertainment center takes up the majority of the apartment. Her bedroom area is sectioned off with some elegant-looking folding screens. “Am I early?”
“Sorry?” She asks, looking up from where she’s messing with something.
“It’s just…no one else is here yet—”
Dogma stares, amazed, as she ducks her head and sheepishly rubs the back of her neck, “Ah, well,” She starts, her voice suddenly very nervous, “It’s just us, you see.”
“Did Jesse and Kix cancel on you?”
“No, no! Nothing like that. I just…only invited you?” She offers sheepishly.
“...what?”
“Well, you see, my home is very small,” She says quickly, “And I can’t really fit a lot of people here anyway, so I had to pick and choose who I wanted to invite and I, well, I picked you.”
Dogma blinks at her, stunned and more than a little flustered, “But, like, I was your third or fourth choice, I’m sure—”
“Ah, no. You were my only choice. I didn’t ask anyone else—” She looks about as embarrassed and flustered as he feels, “Is that weird? Should I have invited someone else?”
“No!” Dogma flushes and presses a hand over his eyes, “Uhm…no. No this is fine. I prefer it like this, actually. You know what my brothers are like—” He gets to be alone with the woman he’s been crushing on and she’s going to feed him, this is a dream come true.
She smiles at him then, though she still looks very flustered, “You do?”
“Well, sure. We don’t get to talk much when we’re working, right?”
Delight slides across her face and Dogma feels his heart skip a beat. She’s so unfairly pretty. “Well, we’re busy people.” Her smile widens, “Have you picked a movie you want to start with?”
“Uh, not really. I don’t know any of these,” Dogma admits, though he does start a random movie, “I guess we can start with I Married Lady Frankenstein.”
“Ooh, that’s a comedy horror movie, it’s kind of campy but I like it.” She looks over the food that she’s making, “Will you grab a bag of cheese from the fridge for me?”
“Yeah, sure.” He pulls open the fridge, grabs the bag of cheese, and tosses it on the counter next to her.
“Thanks~”
“I’m happy to hel—” Dogma stops midsentence because she leans up and presses her lips against his cheek. His face burns with flustered embarrassment, but the only thing he can think is soft.
His gaze snaps to her face, and she’s staring up at him through wide, worried eyes…Dogma gets so flustered at the look on her face, that he lifts his hands to cover her eyes. “Please stop looking at me with those eyes. I can’t think!”
She tugs his hand down slightly, the look of worry fading away to gentle amusement, “Was that too much?”
“You’re going to be the death of me by the end of the night.” Dogma announces as he covers her eyes again, “You just don’t play fair at all, do you?”
“Sorry,” She doesn’t sound very sorry though.
Dogma moves his fingers so she’s able to peek up at him, and a teasing smile crosses his face, “If you’re going to kiss me, you can at least do it properly.”
She releases a flustered squeak and moves his hand to hide behind it.
His grin widens at her reaction and he knows that tonight is going to be great.

Summary: You like to think you’re a little more reasonable than some (most) of your peers. You’ve never been one for flights of fancy or prone to the vapors. People don’t get under your skin because you don’t allow them to. With one, very notable, exception.

When your aunt informed you that she was throwing a Salon for you and your cousin, you thought it would be for your cousin’s birthday celebration. A young lady doesn’t turn 21 every day, after all.
And stars know that your poor cousin deserves to have people paying attention to her, at least for one day.
It was, as it happens, a rather foolish assumption.
“I think Mother is trying to kill me,” Your cousin whispers to you an hour after the Salon starts and she’s able to extract herself from the group of well-wishers who have been hovering around her since the party started.
“I think she’s trying to marry you off.” You counter as you take a sip of your fruity drink, “Or have you not noticed that all of your shadows are noble men?”
She shoots you a look, “This Salon is for both of us. Why don’t you have any suitors?”
“Oh, haven’t you heard? I’m unmarryable.”
“According to whom!?” Your cousin demands, offended on your behalf.
“Myself.”
She shoots you another look, “Some day, cousin of mine, you’re going to fall in love with a man and I’m going to laugh myself sick.”
“Well, then. In deference to your health, I shall simply have to join a convent.”
She elbows you roughly, “Darling, you can’t drink wine at a convent.”
“The things I do for family,” You muse dramatically.
She laughs, which has the misfortune of drawing the attention of her suitors once more, and she hides her sour face behind her fan, “Back to the trenches I go.” She says with a sigh before she sweeps away, her voluminous pink dress swirling around her feet.
You smother your laughter with ease and lift your wine glass back to your lips to take another sip. If nothing else, watching your cousin try and fend off her suitors will be amusing.
It’s not as if anyone is interested in you, after all.
Though, despite what you said to your cousin, there is one man who you wouldn’t mind paying attention to you. Tragically, he’s both not here and is not an acceptable partner for you…according to your Father and his wife.
Tragic.
Heartbreaking, even.
You glance away from your cousin as someone comes to a stop near you, and a flash of red and white catches your attention. A very specific pattern of red and white.
Marshal Commander Fox is standing next to you, still dressed in his armor, with a small grin playing on his handsome face.
“Commander! I wasn’t aware that you had been invited,” You say as you focus your attention on him.
“I was not.” He admits with a shrug, “Technically, I’m crashing the party.”
“Shame on you.”
“Yes, yes. I’m an awful man, I know.” His small grin grows wider at his words, “What can I say, all of the lovely ladies dressed in their finest? I simply had to see for myself.”
You shoot him a slightly amused look, “Funny.”
“I’m being serious.”
“I might believe you if you were looking at anyone else.”
He laughs, “Well, you are the loveliest lady here.” Fox replies with a flirty grin.
“Thank you,”
“I mean it.”
“I know you do. You always do.”
Fox releases a sigh, “You’re turning me down again, aren’t you?”
“I wouldn’t want you to run afoul of my father.” You remind him, “He could ruin you.” And that’s the problem, isn’t it? No matter how much you like Fox, no matter how much you might love him, your Father would ruin him.
And you can’t let that happen.
A heavy sigh falls from his lips, and you chance a glance at his face. He looks unhappy, and your heart clenches painfully. You put that look on his face. This is your fault.
Fox’s gaze locks with yours, and a slow smile crosses his face, “Run away with me.”
“...I beg your pardon?”
“My whole unit is being transferred, we’re moving to the other side of the country. Come with me.” Gently, he takes your free hand and lightly runs his calloused fingers across the palm of your hand, making you shiver.
“Fox—”
“I can’t give you the life you grew up with,” He interrupts, “There’s no glitz or glamour. You won’t be able to throw these types of garden parties, and you’ll probably have to get a job.” Fox lists, “It’s not going to be easy, even I know that. But no real relationship is.”
You open your mouth to say something, but he continues in a rush, as if afraid of what you might say before he can make his full argument.
“And I know you, beautiful. You’ve always hated this kind of stuff. You hate the frilly dresses, the complicated hair-dos, and the jewelry that costs as much as a house.” Fox speaks quickly, his gaze searching your face, “You always complain about how bored you are, how shallow your peers are, how you can’t talk to anyone because all they want to talk about are their social lives—”
“Fox,” You interrupt him buy reaching up and pressing a finger against his lips.
He trails off and looks down at you. A look os anxious anticipation on his face.
You favor him with a soft smile, “Do you think I could get hired at the local library?”
Fox looks surprised for a moment, “Wait…does that mean—?”
“Nothing would make me happier than to go with you,” You whisper to him.
He squeezes your hand, “Then we’d better run before your parents catch us,” Fox replies with a wide grin, “Thorn is already ordained, and Thire promised to be our witness.”And you giggle as you allow him to sneak you out of the party. Your life is going to be harder now, you know. But it’s worth it. He is worth it.
