Have you ever realised that Pat and Julian as kids as well as Fanny and Captain would of grown up hearing stories of how polio was able to cripple healthy able bodied people and some cases rendered them unable to breathe by themselves? Fortunately, the polio vaccine came out when Pat and Julian were kids so they were probably vaccinated against it.
