I love this fucking movie, and from what I gathered from the commentary (which is amazing and worth a listen) a lot of it has to do with it being a Disney movie with no musical numbers and a piss poor marketing campaign.

The only zombies that have ever scared me in any videogame are the ones from Stalker, exactly because they are talking. Hearing a zombie repeatedly promising his daughter that he'll definitely come back home made me so freaked out as a kid I actually stopped playing the game and haven't touched it untill I was like 16. There's still something human left there, trapped in a decaying body, thinking about it's family but never able to come back to them. Fucking terrifying, no amount of fast jumpscare screaming zombies will ever come close to that psychological horror.
