5 things your character can't do while speaking
Choke. Just think about it, seriously. Think about what choking is and imagine speaking while itâs happening. That would fuckinâ hurt, man.
Hiss. Look, itâs just not possible, okay? No matter how âevilâ you want your character to seem.
Snarl. Animals snarls. The Beast from Beauty and the Beast snarls. The Hulk snarls. You know who doesnât snarl? PEOPLE WHEN THEYâRE SPEAKING.
Shriek. Come on, 99% of the time, âshriekâ is not the word you want.Letâs face it: if you put an exclamation point at the end of the sentence, your reader gets the picture. Donât bring to mind banshees and screaming toddlers.
Sneer. Iâm not even going to bother explaining this one. âSNEERâ ISNâT EVEN A SOUND.
Choked is not meant to be taken literally, an obstruction in the throat. It means theyâre having difficultly speaking, theyâre forcing the words out with difficulty. Often used when the character is convulsed in tears or laughter.
Hiss is a low, threatening whisper. Raw, guttural, vicious. It is NOT a literal hiss like an animal, it is a tone of voice that serves the same function. Someone will hiss that theyâre going to cut your throat- a message from one person to the other.
Snarl is the same kind of thing. Not literal, itâs a tone of voice that serves the same function. Itâs raw and gutteral like a hiss, but more savage than vicious. Itâs loud, itâs showy, itâs intimidating. Itâs very alpha male, big man, look at how fucking dangerous I am. Iâll take ALL of you on. Even if theyâre snarling at one person in particular, nobody better back them up or theyâre gonna get fucked up too.
Shriek. Come on, seriously? Weâve all heard people shriek either in fear or outrage. High pitched, loud, out of control, feminine. Men can shriek, but itâs funny and emasculating. Think angry italian women throwing pots and pans or ladies on tables who just saw a mouse.
Sneering is contempt whether itâs a facial expression or a tone of voice or both. There are a hundred different ways to sneer with your voice, but it all adds up to the same thing.

Yâknow what? Fuck you. *Plays an acoustic guitar version of your leitmotif to show you still have tenderness and care in your heart, and compassion for others*
yeah? well fuck YOU *plays a music box version of your leitmotif to show that this is your home and its comfortable and nostalgic here*
No, piss off! *plays your leitmotif with immense reverb and a toned-down synth sound to show that nostalgia can also be about loss of what never truly was, a reflection of a reflection and a false memory of a false memory*
ok, boomer. *plays your leitmotif using discordant synth bass to display your spiral into villainy after you discover that your memories were a fabricated illusion that were created just to keep you complacent, and how that information is destroying you*
How many times do I have to teach you this lesson, old man? *plays your leitmotif in harmony with my own, intensity of both changing as our climactic battleâs balance shifts back and forth, eventually leaving only one with long, low pauses to musically represent our mutual struggle to overtake the other, yet not being able to exist in full without them.*
oh, youâre going to regret that! *plays your leitmotif on piano in short, soft notes to show that youâre being worn down, and that your energy is at a low, but with a steadily rising bassline that foreshadows your upcoming second form*
Do you have some fun facts about frogs? Cursed or wholesome, I'm not picky!
have you ever wondered; why the desert rain frog has the ass of a small human man?
it's because desert rain frogs are burrowers! they spend most of their time buried in the ground to keep cool and moist in their unenviable desert home. and crucially, they do this BACKWARDS.
so, the secret to a great ass, from a tiny frog: bury yourself in the sand all the time ass-first, and you too will develop glutes of steel.
and then you can make this face all the time forever.
A sudden, terrifying thought
When you see an animal with its eyes set to the front, like wolves, or humans, thatâs usually a predator animal.
If you see an animal with its eyes set farther back, thoughâto the sideâthat animal is prey.
Now look at this dragon.
See those eyes?
Theyâre to the SIDE.
This raises an interestingâand terrifyingâquestion.
What in the name of Lovecraft led evolution to consider DRAGONSâŠ
As PREY?

The eyes-in-the-front thing (usually) only applies to mammals. Crocodiles, arguably the inspiration for dragons, have eyes that look to the sides despite being a predator.
hey what up Iâm about to be That Asshole
This isnât a mammalian thing. When people talk about âeyes on the frontâ or âeyes on the side,â theyâre really talking about binocular vision vs monocular vision. Binocular vision is more advantageous for predators because itâs what gives you depth perception; i.e, the distance you need to leap, lunge, or swipe to take out the fast-moving thing in front of you. Any animal that can position its eyes in a way that it has overlapping fields of vision has binocular vision. That includes a lot of predatory reptiles, including komodo dragons, monitor lizards, and chameleons.
(The eyes-in-front = predator / eyes-on-sides = prey thing holds true far more regularly for birds than it does for mammals. Consider owls, hawks, and falcons vs parrots, sparrows, and doves.)
But itâs not like binocular vision is inherently âbetterâ than monocular vision. Itâs a trade-off: you get better at leap-strike-kill, but your field of vision is commensurately restricted, meaning you see less stuff. Sometimes, the evolutionary benefit of binocular vision just doesnât outweigh the benefit of seeing the other guy coming. Very few forms of aquatic life have binocular vision unless they have eye stalks, predator or not, because if you live underwater, the threat could be coming from literally any direction, so you want as wide a field of view as you can get. If you see a predator working monocular vision, itâs a pretty safe assumption that there is something else out there dangerous enough that their survival is aided more by knowing where it is than reliably getting food inside their mouths.
For example, if you are a crocodile, there is a decent chance that a hippo will cruise up your shit and bite you in half. Iâd say that makes monocular vision worthwhile.
Which brings us back to OPâs point. Why would dragon evolution favor field of view over depth perception?
A lot of the stories Iâve read painted the biggest threats to dragons (until knights with little shiny sticks came along) as other dragons. Dragons fight each other, dragons have wars. And like fish, a dragon would need to worry about another dragon coming in from any angle. Thatâs a major point in favor of monocular vision. Moreover, you donât need depth perception in order to hunt if you can breathe fucking fire. A flamethrower is not a precision weapon. If you can torch everything in front of you, who cares if your prey is 5 feet away or 20? Burn it all and sift among the rubble for meat once everything stops moving.
Really, why would dragons have eyes on the front of their heads? Seems like theyâve got the right idea to me.

Pigeons walking.
âAre We Bad Guys?â (Chapter 2)
Fowen could barely keep up with Moiraâs brisk walk. He was still limping from his time prison escape, and Moira had the advantage of her heart not being on the verge of breaking down. Not just her heart- on top of the limp and cardiovascular tech issue, Fowen felt like heâd cry if he let go of himself too much. He hated that feeling, and he hated himself more for letting himself feel that way.
âWhat did you need me for?â he asked, trying to keep his voice level.
Moira glanced back at him, then frowned. âNot yet. Weâre not far enough away.â She looked him up and down. âAre you hurt? Iâm not walking that fast.â
âMy heart isnâtâŠâ he started, then grimaced as another wave of pain hit. He stopped in the path, clutching his chest and waiting for it to subside to a more manageable level. âMy heart isnât in the best condition right now.â
âAre We Bad Guys?â Chapter 1
Fowen was the bad guy.
He knew that. Ever since he decided to take over Nowenâs story, he knew he would be called the bad guy. At the time, he didnât care. He knew that he wanted to take over the story, since Nowen wouldnât do it on his own. He didnât care what he had to do in order to take his story for himself.
Spending time in the Jules Verne Memorial time prison gave him a long while to think about why he decided to take over the story in the first place. Was it because he felt like he was being controlled and wanted to create his own path? When he put it that way, it seemed really stupid. After everything he went through, it was obvious that he was already in control- that idiot Nobody just didnât realize it. Fowen liked to think he was better than Nobody, since he turned against him in the end and he had moved past the knowledge that he was fictional, being able to deal with the reality of it rather well.
Thatâs what he liked to tell himself.
