Binhi Experience
For my Binhi, I went to diocese of Novaliches where I met some nanays from the community. Since there was something wrong with the schedule so what our activity became centered on is becoming the adoptive children of our nanay. Our nanay was very nice and was very open to us about her life-story. I was very touched when my nanay actually trusted us with such a personal story on her childrenās betrayal but nether less I felt really happy at the end of the day.
Habitus is basically how we act and what we consider to be valuable. For my habitus, I was raised in an environment where my parents were very protective and I could say that I was more on the privilege side. I guess due to that I was more conservative in nature and was more used to an environment where itās quite spacious and air-conditioned. My nanayās habitus, on the other hand, was quite in society with narrow roads and hot areas so I guess her life is more on the open side as she would often invite her neighbors from time to time to stay in her house. This was quite different to my conservative nature where I barely invite our neighbors to our house as we only invite them in special occasions. What I really found different is how nanay was able to stand with the heat because her house has no aircon. For me, I was sweating really hard without the aircon but nanay seemed to be doing really well under the heat. Another thing we differ is how nanay views food. I view food to be like something so much of a small thing to worry about but nanay was very worried about how the food wasnāt able to fit us. She even told us about how sometimes they have little rice to feed the family and how it is getting more expensive by the day. I never really cared about the rice value but here nanay is so worried about the inflation on the rice. But not everything is different for me and nanay, we value education a ton. Nanay and I think that education is a key if we want to elevate our life. Nanay shared about her children who she sent to college hoping that they could help elevate her life and give her wealth. My mother and father pushed me to envision that I have to study well so that I can earn money for them as well once they retire. This is something that I guess nanay and me have the same.
Overall, the experience is really worth it. This activity didnāt only help me realize how privileged I am but also see education in a different light. Education isnāt only something that people from the higher class value but it is also considered to be important by the lower class as a way to elevate them from the cruel poverty of the society.Ā
