Six times Black women besides Rosa Parks said, “Move Where?” (via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DssV_c9UmJ8)
It’s the type of news that takes your breath away—literally. I was scrolling down my Facebook newsfeed and there it was, the news that we’d lost her. I let out a gasp that immediately alerted my almost-sleep kindergartner. She jumped out of her sleeping bag and rushed over. “What, mommy? What...
Officer Darren Wilson is Innocent.
I’m a Black woman and I know this to be true. Innocent because he’s simply an unsuspecting pawn in the ever revolving wheel of racism in this country.
I have no doubt in my mind that when he saw Michael Brown, 6’4, darker skinned, and 292 lbs he felt his life was in danger. After all, Brown was clearly an animal that needed to be neutralized. All Blacks are, that’s why they kill each other at such alarming rates right?
If it’s one thing that slavery has ensconced into the minds of White Americans, it’s an unhealthy fear of the people of the African Diaspora. This fear was born out of guilt. Guilt of devaluing an entire group of people and putting them on the level of animal through the stripping of culture and forbiddance of education. Guilt born out of holding an entire race of people against their will and forcing them to build this country without ever a thought of being paid for it. Guilt that this once great race of people who helped Europeans emerging from the Dark Ages rediscover their history, were now only as good as the next crop and rape to satisfy some sick fetish of the Black Woman’s body. Guilt of using inhumane tactics to punish, subdue, and beat into submission Black bodies who did not accept their unwavering rule, and even those who did.
This guilt was built on all of the above and given credence when slaves like Nat Turner made good on the White man’s worst fear by reacting to the inhumanity shown towards his people. No one was spared at the hands of the disgruntled slaves led by Turner and it proved to Whites that Blacks were indeed animalistic criminals of the lowest order.
That mindset among many has not been eradicated. No, more than 200 years after slavery, it has festered in the hearts and minds of many.
It then manifests itself when a White woman clutches her purse while walking by a well dressed, tall, Black man.
Animal.
It’s evident when one bad deed done by one Black man is indicative of the entire Black race.
Animal.
It’s evident when the cab driver passes by every last Black person and will stop for every last White person.
Animals.
And more often than not it shows itself when Black men are pulled over, stopped on the street, and addressed in Walmart by police who have this animalistic, criminal view of the Black man embedded in their head.
It’s this view that immediately makes them put their hand on the trigger and shoot until the threat (though imaginary is neutralized). Because the threat was very real. After all, he was Black and all Black men are animals. Strong, big, Black animals that need to be taken down.
And even if you think you don’t share this animalistic view of Blacks, when you justify this killing by saying the kid should have respected authority then you too are guilty.
When you say but what about Black on Black crime and ignore that 84% of Whites are killed by Whites then you indeed view the Black race as animals and worthy of collective punishment.
Michael Brown is guilty. He’s guilty of being Black and inheriting the skin that was so despised throughout this country’s history. Most of all he is guilty of not knowing his place. Of not realizing that it’s a separate system of justice that is meted out in this country.
He isn’t the only one.
John Crawford was also unarmed, had just purchased a pellet gun and someone (I won’t presume to know their race) called the cops and reported an armed suspicious looking Black man roaming the aisles of Walmart. Cause you know, if there’s anything more scarier than a Black man it’s a Black man with a gun, ask Huey P. Newton. The police upon arriving immediately shot and killed him while Crawford was on the phone with the mother of his children.
Because he’s Black.
Because he is an animal capable of super human strength.
Nevermind that groups of Whites have been roaming stores and restaurants with guns out in the open to push an open carry law. These men, women, and children were all unharmed. But they of course aren’t guilty of living while being Black.
So you see, Officer Wilson is innocent.
Brown, Crawford, Diallo, Grant, Kimani Gray, Ousmane Zongo, Sean Bell, Victor Steen, Wendell Allen, Ramarley Graham, the list goes on and on. They were all guilty.
Guilty of what?
Living while being Black.
Animals.

There’s something I need the world to know: Islam is for the people, all the world’s people. It isn’t an “Eastern” religion for “Eastern” people. It’s a beautiful religion for everyone who feels pulled toward it. Regardless of what the rest of the world says, there is no hierarchy. Those aren’t my...

After watching all the videos from the popup album “Beyonce,” three things can be said for sure:
1.) She’s great at keeping a secret and somehow got a bunch of other people to be just as good.
2.) She really feels the need to assert herself in a way that is contrary to the Beyonce we’ve grown to...
