A Future in Review podcast reflection on art, technology, open collaboration, and the communities that form when curious people build in public.
A field note on the AI mindset: thinking with machines without surrendering taste, agency, or the human weirdness that makes the work worth doing.
The market doesn't need more artifacts; it's drowning in them. What it needs is authored judgment — taste that can be explained, defended, and taught.
Generation is cheap. Selection is not. Your taste is your moat — what taste actually does in the age of AI.
I wrote this because I want Vancouver to win. Web Summit can bring real value: capital, attention, press, investor density, and a bigger stage for the people already building here. But public funding changes the accountability standard.
Most AI conversations force a binary. Boosters say embrace it. Doomers say resist it. Both feel lazy. I hold the critique in one hand. I hold the capability in the other. That is the only honest place to stand right now.
Applied Ethical AI: Responsible AI Professional Certification (RAP)
Here’s what kept happening. I’d be leading a cohort of TheUpgrade... journalists, PR folks, sales leaders, creatives… and about halfway through week two, the same question would surface every single time. Someone would pause mid-exercise and ask, “Okay but what about the ethics of this?” Not in a hand-wringing way. In a genuine, working-professional way. They’d just used ChatGPT to draft a donor…
Kate Armstrong turned the planetarium into a séance. Flux LoRA trained on her hot tub paintings.
Stop calling it "AI bias." It's misogyny when image generators strip authority from women. It's racism when facial recognition fails Black women at 40x the rate it fails white men. It's sexism when resume algorithms favor men. Name what you're seeing. Make discrimination visible.
I didn’t ask for AI. None of us did. My work got scraped. Yours probably did too. So now what? Not “reject” or “worship.” Both hands full. Critique in one. Agency in the other.
It's advertorial content masquerading as tech media.
Registration for all tracks is open now. Bring your team, or come solo. Just bring your curiosity and your edge.
Stop waiting for the perfect tool or policy. This is what’s working now. Get yer hands dirty—or get comfortable being obsolete.
You thought you were safe in “knowledge work?” The machines ate that script. The future is ordinary life now. Want to survive? Build community, get weird, stay human. #AIcommunity #NowNotNext
We just launched Canada's first grassroots AI industry organization. Not because we love meetings, but because someone has to ask the hard questions while everyone else is busy trying to train AI to print money. Like: Who gets to decide what "intelligent" means when you live on unceded territory?
legit took me like full week to write this, link it, pull the photos, post the videos, make the thumbnails blah blah blah and represents a ton of our collective energy tween all the peeps and projects https://kriskrug.co/2025/05/11/vancouver-ai-meetup-16-where-tech-creativity-and-community-collide/
Vancouver AI Meetup #16: Where Tech, Creativity, and Community Collide
The Vancouver AI Community Meetup #16 vibrated with creative energy, blending indigenous wisdom with bleeding-edge tech, grassroots community-building with critical thought. As I declared at the opening: “You are the BC + AI ecosystem.” and what followed was a vivid demonstration of that ecosystem’s diversity and momentum. “Friends, we live at a time where new forms of expression are emerging…
