Hi! So, I got bored and decided I’ll be teaching the basic techniques of how to achieve these two gifs from my Laura Palmer x A-Bunch-of-Things-Gifset!

Now, a lot of will be similar to my previous gif tutorial from here, but it's disctinct enough I decided to do another one.
Let's go to the tutorial!

Because I no longer have the same movie, I will be using this gif of Lawrence's photo from Saw, which has the same colors and vibe, for both my examples. Ignore the "group" layer on my example images, I did it all again before teaching to make sure it worked, and then grouped the layers so it'd be easier for me to showcase it.
Ok, so for the explosion shape: Open a new document, grab the line tool...
And… Draw. That's it. You can free hand this, you can also get an example off of the internet and trace on top of it. Either is fine. These are my settings and an example, half thing:
Make sure to draw the entire shape and close all lines so it is a contained thing. We'll be selecting the inside of the shape later on, so this is important for the magic wand to not select anything outside of it. Also, if you get any overlap, move the individual lines accordingly with the arrow keys until they align.
Then, select all lines, right click, merge all shapes into one big thing, like so:
This is it. Now you have an explosion effect. Now, open your gif. Take this shape and paste it on top of a new layer, on top of your frames like so.
It might look too big, so resize it until it looks good (it doesn't have to fit perfectly, mine don't).
Once you're satisfied, make a new layer over your previous frames. Paint bucket it whatever color you feel like (in my case it was red), the color is not important right now. From here on, it's basically the same as usual: Right click, resterize layer, and use the magic wand to select the middle of it, like so.
Then, select the layer underneath the resterized one and delete the middle so the gif will show through. Connceal the shape or delete it because you don't need it anymore (or keep it if you think it looks neater, cause it does lol, though the lines always look a little frayed, this isn't a perfect art). Et voila, a perfectly good explosion gifset.
For the lettering, I just used Arial Black, and flipped it slightly.
Then you can edit, add the colors you want. I didn't make mine as gritty as the original this time, but here is the full example:
Now, onto the second gif!
Open the gif as usual. Now go back to your capture folder (wherever that is) and open one of the frames used in the same gif as well. It could be any frame, but it's better if it's a middle frame so the gif meets it instead of starting with it, for a better effect. Take this static frame, resize it so it meets the original gif's height and weight, and paste it on top of the original gif, like so.
(I realize now that it doesn't translate, but know that this is the static image on top of the gif. Trust). Make sure the image is properly aligned, or the effect doesn't take (unless you're going for a more 3D thing). After you're satisfied, set it at 50% opacity:
You can then add a gradient map of whatever color you want. Since this was already a red gif, the effect was obvious right away, though I made the gif underneath the frame a little darker using levels. Doing this without a gradient map, on a regular gif makes it even more dizzying. It's also best to have this type of gif a little slowed, as to not cause nausea (but that's up to the creator, honestly). Anyway, edit, sharpen it, do all that good stuff.
Then, use Arial Black again (though I think the original was Arial Bold Italic, but it can honestly be whatever you want), and here it is:
The only difference is that Laura's gif has a black border, but I taught how to do that in this tutorial already, so head there if you wanna find out (also, remember that photoshop already has a rounded rectangle tool, something I overlooked during my first tutorial lol).

Keep in mind, that finished and with the white to balance it, this gif is usually less heavy than the previous one, which is helpful in heavier edits in general (like my web weaving ones are).

After some Adobe shenanigans, it proved to be time for a new one of these, and after some testing, I settled on what seems to be the most stable one. And the crack— it’s a little old school— but that was/is the tried and true! Don’t worry, it’s not difficult, anyone and everyone can do this, and I’m here to help you every step of the way. Let’s hop into it!
1. Navigate to this link and download the file. And for reassurance, this is my own Google drive, specifically made to host my resources.
2. When done downloading, unzip it somewhere you can find it back (Windows can do it for you, but otherwise, I personally use a program called Winrar or you can try 7ZIP), even your desktop works fine.
3. Open the unzipped folder and double click the file called ‘Set-up.exe’ (it’ll be a little white icon) and follow the installation instructions. Under ‘Location’, you can leave it set to ‘Default’ without issue, or if you have a different spot where you want to install it, install it there.
4. When it’s done, do not open it yet, and if it opened automatically, simply exit out of it once it’s booted up. Go back to the unzipped folder from step #3, and go into the folder called ‘Crack’.
5. Do you see that little Photoshop.exe file, blue icon? Select it and hit Ctrl+C or right-click and click ‘copy’. Then go to your file explorer, then ‘My PC’ (or ‘My Computer’) and either go into the directory you chose in step #3, or go to the default installation location, which is:
C: > Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop 2022
It’ll be a folder that has the little blue icon to recognise it easily. When in there, hit Ctrl+V or click anywhere and select ‘paste’. It will ask you whether you want to overwrite the file, and you simply say ‘yes’. And voila! That’s it, that’s all there is to it. You can now right click the file that was pasted to boot the program, search for it– pin it to your taskbar, start menu; whatever you prefer!

A black box will appear, it may look like it’s not doing anything for a little bit, but trust me, it is— within a minute or so, it disappears and voila! That’s it, that’s all there is to it. You can now right click the file that was pasted to boot the program, search for it– pin it to your taskbar, start menu; whatever you prefer!

just wanted to share an update on my past gif actions since i no longer use that anymore. there a bunch of actions out there but if anyone is curious on my process <3
action includes:
load files fast: open with image sequence with frame rate delay of 25 (you'll need to configure this to your own folder)
6 sharpening actions
brighten: duplicates smart object sets the mode to "screen" i use these for dark scenes
frame delay: convert layers in video timeline to frame layers in frame animation and sets frame delay to 0.04
convert to video timeline: layers in frame animation are put into a smart object in video timeline
text: sets a drop shadow and stroke setting to text

Load Files Fast action opens up a folder where you put your own screencaps in and loads the caps in PS and makes it into a smart object. You will need to configure this yourself since it uses my own folder. Click on Load Files Fast, select "Record" button and then choose File > Open, navigate to the folder that you use to store your screencaps, select the first cap, click on the "Image Sequence" option on the bottom right of the dialog box and then click "Open". It will then ask you to specify the frame rate, I use 25, then click OK. Then you click on the "Stop" button and your action is saved. [video on how here]
After it is put into a Smart Object, I use one of my crop presets I've made. To load them into Photoshop, click on the down arrow next to the crop bottom, click Load Tool Preset and select my preset.
Then I choose a sharpening I want to use. I'm either use 'high pass' or the 'sharper w/o grain' one.
OPTIONAL - Brighten action, brightens the scene using 'Screen' mode. I use these for really dark scenes.
After that I color the gif and add text if needed.
If I want to change the frame delay, I use the 'frame delay' action and set my delay to 0.04 and then save the gif!
If you do decided to use the frame delay action, you won't be able to change the coloring and text once its in frame animation. So you can decide to do your coloring/text after you use this action so you don't have to go back and forth if you decide you want to change your coloring or text.

aw thank you so much, i'm so happy with how the set turned out! plus i had some amazing inspiration to work from (linked in the caption of that post)!
below the cut, i'll walk you through how i went about creating these gifs and where i look for resources like film overlays!
before i get into how i actually made these gifs, let's talk about resources first! all off the textures and overlays you see in the above gifs are PNGs from various websites. i didn't create anything from scratch myself. i used to have three go-to sites for PNGs and vectors, but it appears that freepik has become way more geared toward generative AI than the last time i went on there, so i no longer recommend that one. i still use PNGegg and PNGWing though! i also have tags on @gifmakerresource that you can peruse: all resources, PNGs, textures, and masterposts! oh, and i recommend periodically checking out creative market's free section as i've found some pretty good resources and fonts there as well!
now, over the years, i've amassed quite a collection of resources, or as i have them labelled on my computer, photoshop shit lmao
this is just the "film" folder, which is what i primarily used for this gifset.
now, for how i actually made the gifs! for the first gif, i just chose a single shot of samira and grabbed some textures and a film effect video overlay (you can find so many on youtube).
once my gif was made and sharpened, i colored it with my normal pitt psd and then put a black & white gradient map layer over top. then i added two film overlays/textures, both of which i made black and white as well before bringing them onto the canvas.
i added a black & white gradient map to both of these on their original canvases and then merged the layers together. then i brought them to my gif and set the blending mode on both of them to screen. i added these to all four gifs, just moved them around and rotated them so they weren't in the exact same spot each time.
on top of these textures, i added a video overlay with super 8 effects that i found on youtube. i don't have the exact link, but i'm sure if you search on youtube for "film overlay" or "kodak film overlay" or something similar, you'll find plenty of results! i added a black & blue gradient map to this so instead of the noise/effect being white, it's the same blue i used throughout the set. i set this layer to screen as well and moved it around from gif to gif so the pattern wasn't exactly the same.
i then added various film strip textures, playing around with the orientation until i was happy with it. this is why using pngs is extra important bc a png allows for a transparent background, allowing your gif to show through rather than having to manually make it transparent.
i also added various tape textures. to change the colors, i double-clicked on their layers and selected color overlay from the menu and chose the hex code based on the color palette i was using.
a lot of it is just playing around and trying different resources until you're happy with how everything looks!
a final note: i don't exactly know what causes it, but when using video overlays, i find that once i run my save action, i have to change the frame rate to 0.03 otherwise it looks really slow. there must be some kind of discrepancy between the source footage and the overlay because without the video overlay, i can leave my gifs at 0.05 for the frame rate.

i've been wanting to share a gif-making tutorial for a long time, and since i recently hit 5000 followers i'm finally posting it!! i've collected a lot of resources and learned a lot of tricks over the years, and i'm very happy to finally share them with you all. i've included an overview of my full gifmaking process, as well as downloadable PS actions, PSDs, sharpening, and more, so hopefully this is helpful to both beginners and experienced gifmakers alike!! ✨
here is a folder of all the resources from this tutorial. all of them will also be linked individually below, along with any other websites and software that i recommend!
Video Downloaders/Resources
The first step of gif-making is to get your hands on a video file for the content you want to gif. The reality is that the most reliable way to access high quality versions of movies & tv shows is through t*rrenting, and in order to t*rrent, you need a paid VPN. I will recommend free alternatives for everything where at all possible, but a couple of investments will save you a lot of effort and give you access to waaaaay more stuff.
VPN (paid) - I use Surfshark, any paid VPN should work, find whichever has the best deal
T*rrent client - i use qBitt*rrent
Magnet link sites: Eztv, ThePirateBay, uIndex, 1337x, LimeT*rrents, T*rrentLeech
Video Guidelines: I usually use files that are 1080p quality. I used to use 2160p quality files almost exclusively, but it takes way longer, and with a good quality 1080p file, the result is basically just as good. In order to find a good file, check the file size before you download it. For a 1 hour tv show episode, you want a file around 3 or 4 GB. Anything under 1 GB won't give you a good result.
More options for downloading other kinds of videos:
Video DownloadHelper (paid) - download directly from video platforms! you get a couple downloads for free, but the paid version is worth it for me. Pros: works instantly so you dont have to wait for the t*rrent file to be posted, works on lots of sites, pay once/no subscription. Cons: no embedded subtitles.
Dropout-dl (free) - Command line downloader for Dropout.tv. Pros: free, works instantly, embedded subtitles, and always creates a separate searchable subtitle file. Cons: very technical setup. For this one, you will also need Docker.
VideoProc Converter (free version) - good for downloading YouTube, and extracting embedded subtitles from video files (5 minute limit on the subtitle thing)
Screencaps
The next step is to convert your video to screencap images.
mpv

I use mpv to make my screencaps because it's the most efficient, in my opinion. In order to set it up, you have to edit the settings in the "mpv.conf" file. Mine is located here: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\mpv. I've linked a sample of the settings I use above. I recommend changing the screenshot-directory to a different folder for your screencaps. I organize my screencaps in numbered folders to keep track of them.
Image Software
I use Photoshop CS6 version, from this link:

The other software you can use is Photopea. There's lots of tutorials for that on photopeablr!
Importing Screencaps to Photoshop
In Photoshop, go to File -> Scripts -> Load Multiple DICOM Files. Then, paste the file path of one of your screencap folders into the pop-up.
Creating Gif Smart Object
First off: if your screencaps have a black border anywhere, crop it out, making sure that "Delete Cropped Pixels" is selected.
Next, there are a bunch of steps to be able to work with your screencaps in Photoshop. I have all of those steps saved as Actions.

For a full description of how my actions work, how to use them, and a description of every action, I created a separate post just for that! It was a little too long to include here lol. It's not necessary to read the whole thing; feel free to just start using the first action and figure it out with trial and error if you want!
Coloring Layers
It's kind of hard to describe the coloring process, so I've provided several PSDs of gif colorings that you are free to use!

Here's a list of the adjustment layers I usually use, in the order I add them: Exposure, Levels, Curves, Brightness, Vibrance, (then i make a new folder for just the coloring layers) Channel Mixer, Color Balance, Hue/Saturation x many, Selective Color x many
If you take a look at the Louis file in the PSD folder, than you can see all the layers I used to go achieve this coloring:
Add captions
Next, add captions and anything else you want on your gif. This is the font I use for captions:
Arial Rounded MT Bold
Here are the text settings I use. In order to add Layer Styles, right-click on your text layer and click 'Blending Options'.
Export and fix gif speed
Now that the gif is ready with all of the right layers, export it by going to File -> Save for Web. (This takes a while to load as photoshop is putting everything together.) These are the export settings I use:
When the window pops-up, make sure to change the looping option to forever, and then you can save your gif. I also highlighted the area where it shows the final file size of the gif. This needs to be under 10MB, or else tumblr won't allow you to upload it.
This result is good, but when you first export it, the speed of the frames is wrong.
In order to fix the speed: open the .gif file in Photoshop, select all the frames, and change the speed to 0.05 seconds. Repeat the Save for Web step, and overwrite your previous .gif file when you save it. (You can also double check that the gif loops 'Forever' at the very bottom.)
And here's our final gif!
Repeat these steps as needed for the rest of the gifs in the scene. Remember to check out my action pack to save a lot of time on repeated steps!
Here's some additional tips and tricks for giffing to make your life easier:
Tips for skin tone
I often spend a lot of time ensuring that the skin tones of the people in my gifs look natural. It's very important to represent people's skin tones accurately, and it's not acceptable to whitewash or colorwash people of color's skin tones.
Here are some tutorials I've found very helpful:

A lot of shows these days have really pale and muted palettes, so Vibrance really helps to add saturation and dimension. If the subject looks too pale/whitewashed, increase the saturation and deepness of the Yellow and Red colors using Selective Color layers.

Tips for recoloring
I recently posted a small tutorial that goes over my recoloring process, such as in the example below of changing the background from neutral yellow to blue. It also goes over some more complicated gif effects.

For Curves layers, I don't use the eyedropper method. I just click on the line to adjust it myself, making the darks darker and lights lighter. This gives the gif a lot more dimension and contrast.

Every gif is different - sometimes, even two shots of the same person in the same scene can have drastically different lighting and color-grading from each other. I recommend playing around with the values in the adjustment layers a lot to fit your gifs as needed. You can also reduce the opacity of layers to lessen their effect, or duplicate layers to increase their effect. (I often reuse coloring layers and make these changes, so it's a real method!)
