Somewhere, recently, I came upon this idea that I found so powerful and great and yet I can’t recall where I heard it. It’s either related to Hannah Arendt and her book “Origins of Totalitarianism“ or Nietzsche, and I have notes that support both sources but...?
Anyway, it was about the concept of relating to other people through systems. Arendt definitely writes about how totalitarianism arises (in part, of course) when people are disconnected from each other and become atomized bodies, losing a sort of shared reality. There’s also an interpretation of Nietzsche and nihilism talking about the modern business state with similar words, with the need to comptete for basic living standards as the core problem of humanity.
Either way, there are so many issues where it’s obvious someone is concerned about and defending a system over other people, because that’s the only way they relate to “others”: as functions of a system.
