Hornet 'Hornet' Silksong design for the @creatingblackcharacters DYTIS!
I couldn't decide on a hair for her so I tried a few different things, I wanted to incorporate beads that mimicked the look of those infection blobs (? Idk I don't play the game). Originally my idea was bantu knots with two larger knots to mimick the horns, but I also ended up trying a few others
Anyway!!! Please check out CBC and all the other entries, so many amazing and unique designs that I'm just fawning over!!!!
Come back tomorrow for another cute butterfly!

Love it when wasps are blue and very shiny. Last fall I saw a Chlorion aerarium and was entranced. Hopefully I get to see one again this year but theyre pretty rare
Seeing one of those blue beauties would be such a treat! While being able to see one in person would be the ideal, at least with photos I get to enjoy spotting the photographer reflected in their shiny butts
My Hornet design for @creatingblackcharacters's DTIYS!
[Image Description: Two drawings of Hornet, a thin, dark-skinned woman, in front of a solid purple background. One shows her holding her needle while wearing her red cloak and white mask. The other shows the lightweight armour worn underneath. Her hair is white and is styled into locs that spiral into forming two long horn shapes behind her head. End ID]
Some notes for the design-
I liked how some artists drew bug Hornet with a realistic exoskeleton, so I wanted to emulate it a bit with the look of the armour.
Hexagon shapes on her knees for the hive. And two more on the torso for the shape of a spider's body.
I imagined her incorporating her silk to help style and maintain her hair. If it got messed up during battle, she'd be able to fix it while healing.
*runs* *stops* *panting* WAIT FOR ME I HAVE FINISHED MY HORNET GIJINKA FOR @creatingblackcharacters DTIYS!!!
THIS WAS SO FUN I LOVE MY LIL HORNET GIJINKA
Some design notes:
Since I do interpret Hornet as juvenile-looking (like Shakra does, lol), I reflected that in my character design. That includes her round, curious eyes and the little nose!
I saw only versions of Hornet in her classic red cloak so I decided to do her White Palace version!! That includes the classic white cape and also I added a pretty lil dress.
I wasn't really sure what to do with her mask/horns, at first I thought to give the gijinka a mask as well, but I didn't want to cover her face for this DTIYS. Might draw her WITH a mask later though since I did like the idea in general. So for this one, I decided to lean more into her Wyrm side and gave her dragon horns and a few scales.
She's not wearing any shoes specifically because they're terrible for climbing and she'd hate that. So she took her shoes off and climbed the walls barefoot. Her feetsies are OUT
I spent soooo long thinking about her hair because on the one hand, she'd wear something practical, but on the other, she'd wear something pretty. So I gave her some locs around which she wraps red and yellow yarn!! The red and yellow represent two of her mothers, Herrah and Vespa (the White Lady is already represented enough by her outfit lol... also originally I wanted there to be a tree to represent her but I cropped it out so I could finish the painting in time).
She's using a drop spindle to spin yarn! Since she is half Weaver, I thought it fitting for a human Hornet to be a spinner as well. The spindle and the bag she keeps her wool in are both red to represent her Weaver heritage, juxtaposed against the white of the White Palace.
The guy in the reflection is her father, the Pale King. He's in a very similar pose to Hornet, because I thought it would be another interesting reflection of one side of the family versus the other, while still showing that Hornet is also like her father in some ways (*cough* buzzsaws *cough*).
Finally, her sitting outside the window (after having presumably climbed the palace walls mind you lol) and spinning is supposed to represent Hornet being herself, and a mixture of all her parents at that, as opposed to being put into a box, something integral to her story. She's not just a Weaver, she's not just a princess and she's not just a Wyrm. She's Hornet and she's climbing the palace walls when she wants to.
