~ Perpetrated it — Germany, Romania, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Fascist Italy

~ Collaborated with it — Vichy France, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Greece, parts of Yugoslavia, Ukraine, and Poland

~ Stood aside — Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey

~ Fought Germany, but did not prioritize rescuing Jews — United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union

~ Restricted or refused Jewish refugees — United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, France, and most Évian Conference states

~ Restricted Jewish escape to Palestine — United Kingdom

~ Opposed or fought the creation of a Jewish state — Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen

And if your country somehow escapes that list but sits in the New World, there is a good chance your own society was built through conquest and settlement of somebody else’s homeland.

Jews, meanwhile, are a people whose history, religion, language, archaeology, and ancestry all originate in Judea.

So spare us the lectures about the supposed moral stain of Jews establishing a state there 80 years ago. Much of the world had just murdered them, helped murder them, abandoned them, shut its doors to them, or fought to prevent them from having a country of their own. And many of the people now shouting “colonizer” live on continents colonized far more recently by their own societies.

Seriously: STFU.

On This Day — August 1, 1948

David Ben-Gurion made Israel’s position on the Arab refugees crystal clear.

Speaking while the war launched by five Arab armies to annihilate the Jewish state in the crib was still underway, he said the refugee question would be addressed as part of a full peace settlement. Any solution had to account for Jewish counter-claims for the destruction of Jewish life and property, the long-term interests of both populations, the stability of the new state, and the responsibility of the Arab governments for the war of aggression they had started.

Israel created a Custodian of Abandoned Property to protect empty homes and fields. It later offered family reunification, the release of frozen bank accounts, compensation for land, and the return of 100,000 refugees.

But the Arab states rejected every proposal. They refused any step that could be read as recognition of Israel.

Their own leaders explained why. Egyptian Foreign Minister Muhammad Salah al-Din stated that return meant the refugees coming back “as masters of the homeland … the liquidation of the State of Israel.”

A Lebanese newspaper wrote the demand for return was intended to create a powerful fifth column “for the day of revenge.”

Israel had already absorbed roughly 160,000 Arabs who stayed and became citizens. Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett called unrestricted return of those who fled “suicidal folly.”

The refugees stayed refugees because the Arab states preferred permanent grievance to any settlement that left a Jewish state standing.

Ben-Gurion’s words on August 1, 1948, were not the closing of a door.

They were an invitation to negotiate that was deliberately refused.

When Israel captured the Nazi mass murderer Adolf Eichmann in 1960, the Jewish state was condemned by the international community, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. Even though these nations executed countless Nazis on foreign soil and occupied many countries in Europe, the UN passed Resolution 138 condemning Israel and warning that Eichmann’s arrest had “undermined international peace.”  The Argentinian politicians who knowingly harbored Nazis compared Israel to “regimes universally condemned,” which led to violent pogroms against the country’s Jewish community. The New York Post and the Washington Post joined the choir. The Times accused Israel of “inverse racism,” while the Christian Science Monitor compared Israel’s willingness to act against Jew killers abroad to Nazi Germany which also, um, acted abroad. Today they're making movies, writing books, and publish graphic novels about this. They celebrate it as a triumphs of good vs. evil. None of these stories mention the condemnation. Same goes for the raid on Entebbe. So don’t be disheartened by all the noise you’re hearing from the UN, the media, and the shit eaters we mistakenly call professors, journalists, and actors.  Their noise will soon be forgotten. Even by them. Just remember: there’s only one appropriate reply to their screeching. “Fuck these people.”
