Kevin Seraphins cut at the Knicks game today #Paris
so god damn close!!! man, KP is something special guys... another double double. the crazy thing is, he's just getting started. basically has no plays run for him and still manages to score (except for this one at the end of the game) watching pre season, i didn't he didn't have this approach for rebounding at all. my, a lot changes in a couple of weeks! no worries guys, a loss - but things are looking way up for this Knicks squad
Looking Good... Looking Real Good.
Knicks just wrapped up their first pre-season game against NBA competition - the Wizards.
Some knotes...
Kyle O’Quinn and Robin Lopez are easily going to be my favorite players this season. Kyle - plays d, rebounds (actually boxes out), sets great screen and can actually knock down a jumper, what more can you ask for? Lopez, another defensive big that can get up and down the floor. The Knicks FINALLY have legit front court of players.
For the first time in a REALLY long time, the Knicks have depth. There isn’t one player I don’t like when they are on the court. Yes... even Sasha Vujecic - say what you want, the man can knock down a jumper.
Melo is going to have a really really good season. First two games, he’s been shooting lights out. I expect this to carry over and then some. He just looks like he’s having fun and letting the game come to him.
Kristaps showed signs of what we can all look forward to. Rebounded the ball well, had a couple of block shots, passed the ball really well and his jumper looked silky smooth. Add in the fact that he can put the ball on the floor and shoot off the dribble. Man... can’t wait for him to get more comfortable. Still looks a little lost out there.
Derrick Williams needs to cut that shit off of his head... but outside of that, might be a nice little spark off the bench this year. (finished with 23 points tonight).
I can’t wait for Afflalo to come back from injury and join in.
I eventually want Jerian Grant to be the starting point guard. Doesn’t have to be this season, but the steadiness he provides and the ability to get to the basket is what I want.
Ahhhh, this team is going to be so fun to root for this season!!! can’t wait.
#TheTankWasWorthIt
PS, I have no clue what I want the starting line up to be. I love O’Quinn, but KP spaces the floor so well with Melo.
Knicks are back, so I’m back, well sort of...
The Knicks kicked off their pre-season tonight against an international team (Paschoalotto/Bauru - Brazil).
But, that... that isn’t the best thing that happened today. It was actually news breaking about Matt Barnes driving 95 miles to confront Derek Fisher about dating his ex-wife.
Yea... you read that right.
He drove 95 miles... to try and fight Derek Fisher.
UN-REAL.
In case you were wondering, here’s what the ex-wife looks like:
I guess Fish is fine, since he was there coaching tonight. But... weird, such a weird story.
Anyway... right, the Knicks had a pre-season game tonight.
Guess what? They looked pretty damn good. Starting the game: Jose Calderon, Sasha Vujecic, Melo, Porzingis and Lopez.
Carmelo came our firing and basically hit everything he shot. Must feel good to be out for that long (surgery) and come back without missing a beat.
Porzingis looked nervous/lost - but he did knock down a few jumpers. He’ll be fine.
I am ridiculously excited about Robin Lopez & Kyle O’Quinn. It’s finally nice to have bigs that can actually play defense.
It was great seeing NYK back in action. Been too long.
Oh, I said “sort of” in the title because I won’t be able to post all the time this season. Will be checking in here and there though.
Thanks for keeping up, definitely appreciate the reads.
Happy 53rd birthday to one of the greatest Knicks of all time.
Not a bad pick up. A 6′9′‘-10′‘ forward/center that played for the Wizards last season (5 season total).
Career 6 point 4 rebound guy, but really hasn’t gotten the minutes.
Figure this is a good big body to add to the roster.
Sasha Vujacic Signing One-Year Deal With Knicks - RealGM Wiretap
Kind of chuckled a bit when I read this headline.
what?
okay, whatever. Vet minimum - back up PG. whatever....
Knicks Update
A few updates on the Knicks since Summer League ended.
Signed two rookies to partially guaranteed contracts: Darion Atkins a power forward out of Virginia and Wesley Saunders a shooting guard out of Harvard. Both will most likely join the Knicks D-League team in hopes to make the final roster at some point. We do have a couple of spots open - but it appears that Atkins may have a better chance at making the team considering the need for big men
The Mavericks beat the Knicks out in signing summer league surprise Maurice Ndour. They offered him a fully guaranteed rookie minimum contract of $600K and a partial second year. Phil was only willing to offer a partial $200K deal. And according to Berman of the post, Phil tried to negotiate with Ndour even after he agreed to the Mavs deal. I mean... why not? ha
Last, but not least - well... actually, yea, least. Phil apparently has shown a some interest in signing Carlos Boozer. Again, this is from Berman of the Post. We do need a big man, but I’d rather not sign this fool.
Hope everyone summer is going well!
Training camp is starting soon.
Great series of articles so far, but this was probably the best.
Phil goes into details surrounding the JR and Shump trades. Really interesting stuff here.
Summer League Game 3 Thoughts: Knicks v Sixers
If you haven’t seen it already, here is how the game started tonight:
Link brings you to a vine of Porzingis nailing a 20 footer right over Okafor.
Final Stat Line:
Kristaps Porzingis: 9 points (3-5 from field, 0-1 from three, 3-4 from line), 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers, 7 fouls - 22 minutes
Jerian Grant: 12 points (5-9 from field, 1-3 from three, 1-1 from line), 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers - 31 minutes
Kristaps had a very similar game to the first one. He wasn’t too involved in the offense (most of that by design since they were trying to play within the triangle offense), but many times, he just passively called for the ball - never really made an effort to go and get it. Same way he approaches rebounding I guess, which is reaching a laughable level of awfulness. He simply doesn’t want to rebound the ball. He has no instincts and no desire to go after the rebounds.
Sort of a premier match-up tonight as KP went head to head with Jahlil Okafor. He’s my one sentence summary of Okafor: extremely mature post player... that’s about it.
KP struggled playing defense while on Okafor’s back, which allowed him to get an easy post entry pass. Porzingis just isn’t strong enough to contain a larger player like Okafor. Where KP excelled was when he started fronting Okafor and started denying the entry a bit. His recovery after the entry was fine, ended up getting all 3 of his blocks on Jahlil. I do want to add, they were all “standing” blocks - this kid loves just being vertical around the rim.
On offense, Porzingis had his free-throw extended jumper going, but very hesitant about putting up open three pointers. The Knicks and Porzingis himself need to figure out how he’s going to succeed in this league - would probably recommend watching tapes of Dirk. I’m a little concerned because, have the Knicks every been able to develop a player?
Jerian Grant - this guy man... solid. Real solid basketball player. Does everything you want out of a point guard. Knicks fans are going to be very happy with him, probably the most sound point guard we’ve had in a long time. Just a small, controlled player.
Have to make a comment on Maurice Ndour. That’s three games in a row now that he’s impressed. Tonight, he finished with 23 points, 6 rebounds in 28 minutes. Ndour plays like Kenneth Faried. Just a pure athlete with a very high motor. Not a bad jump shot either. If the Knicks don’t give him a spot, some NBA team is going to sign him.
Here’s how the game started tonight.
That’s Zinger nailing a jumper over Okafor.
Summer League Game 3: vs. Philly (5:30 PM EST - MSG)
The Summer League Knicks are back at again tonight. Yesterday, we went up against #2 pick D’Angelo Russell, tonight it’ll be against #3 pick Jahlil Okafor and the 76ers.
Going to be interesting to see if Porzingis ends up guarding Jahlil at all.
I’m excited.
Also, we’ll see what kind of offensive positioning Fisher decides to put KP in tonight. A mix of both post and pick and pop? or something new?
Second Impression: KP & Grant
Not bad… not bad at all.
Final Stat Lines:
Kristaps Prozingis: 9 points (3-5 from the field, no 3-pt attempts, 3-7 from the line), 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover - 18 minutes
Jerian Grant: 10 points (3-8 from the field,1-1 three, 3-3 from the line), 8 assists, 4 steals, 3 turnovers - 28 minutes
Before I get into the two Knicks, have to comment on D’Angelo Russell - man, not a good game from him AT ALL. He finished with 8 points, 3 assists and 8 turnovers. EIGHT turnovers. He made a lot of dumb passes, which was kind of shocking. I’m sure it’s all still nerves and maybe a little too overzealous, but did not come away impressed. He’ll be fine though.
Kristaps - Fisher took a much different approach with him tonight. Instead of working Porzingis on high screen and fading out, he had Porzingis in the pinch post for most of the game (high post on the weak side of the ball). So the big difference from Game 1, he was much more involved on the offensive end. It was nice to see KP calling for the ball every time he had a mismatch. He had a couple of good moves, but still - he needs to add weight. If not, he’ll have a really tough time operating down there or in the paint.
Defensively, looked just as good in game one. He just really knows how to use his height and length. His terrible rebounding is consistent haha.
It’s pretty impressive what KP is able to do in his limited minutes (being held to 18 a game to bring him back slowly from the hip injury). Very difficult to get into any rhythm with minutes like that, but he’s making the most of it.
Because he was in the post most of the game, he didn’t get a chance to put up a three pointer. I like what Fisher is doing with him, basically experimenting with where Porzingis fits in, where he feels comfortable.
Grant - His maturity shows. Always played controlled, very smart and careful with the ball. The last couple of turnovers were toward the end of the game and not really bad ones - just slipped a bit. But, EIGHT assists in 28 minutes is lovely. Fans are going to like this kid - just a very solid ball player.
What I’m most happy about? Progress - every game I’d like to see a little bit more.
Knicks are back at it tomorrow night, 5:30 PM against the 76ers.
Summer League: Game 2 (8:30 PM - MSG)
Game 2 is tonight at 8:30 PM EST on MSG against the Lakers.
We all get our second look at Kristaps and Grant and a much closer look at D’Angelo Russell of the Lakers.
D’Angelo Russell, of course, was my that guy that I would have loved to have gotten in the draft - but because of shitty luck, the Lakers got the second pick and we dropped to number four.
Oh well, hoping it all works out for the Knicks in the end... please?
First Impression: Kristaps Porzingis
KP’s final stat line: 12 points (3-5 FG, 0-1 from three, 6-7 from the line), 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 TO, 2 fouls in 18 minutes of action.
The entire time Kristaps was on the floor, I had to keep reminding myself that he’s only 19 years old and this is just the first game - a summer league game at that.
So, I can’t be too tough on my evaluation. But, here it goes:
The Good:
He’s 19 years old - just needed to remind myself again.
The guy is tall. You really can’t teach height, huh? And it shows on the defense end. It is extremely difficult to shoot over this kid and KP completely gets this. There were a few times he got a little antsy and left his feet to contest a shot, but he did a really good job just sticking his ground and be as vertical as possible. The result, 2 block shots and a bunch of altered ones. I feel like he’s been watching Roy Hibbert or something because when he’s guarding someone within a foot of the basket, he just stands straight up with his arms perfectly vertical. It’s great, that’s how to use your height around there. He clogs the shit of the lane. He’s definitely good for at least 1.5 blocks a game.
Active on-ball screener - he looked really good screening for the ball handler. The problem? He wasn’t involved much after the screen. It would be wise for the Knicks to incorporate some offensive sets where Porzingis gets the ball on a pick and pop. He’ll thrive in that situation.
Mobile - doesn’t move like Anthony Davis (I mean, how many people do at that height?), but he certainly can get up and down the court. To be honest, I expected a little more fluidity to his running based on the workout videos I saw. It just felt like a big man was running up and down. I didn’t get that impression when I watched his workout video
He gets to the line - in 18 minutes of action, he attempted 7 free throws. No bad at all. He likes contact - and because of that, he’ll draw fouls (even got fouled on a three pointer). This is good because he is a REALLY good free throw shooter. I expect at least 85% for the season.
Willing passer - made some very instinctual passes, pretty good vision hitting guys off back doors and cuts. This will be very important in The Triangle.
Did not force any action - played well within the system... maybe to a fault though.
The Bad:
Adding onto the last point, this could entirely be first game issues, but KP wasn’t very aggressive on offense. Played only within the system, which is fine, but you’d like to see him look for his shot, call for a post a bit more - but that will hopefully develop over time as he gets more comfortable
KP had a VERY difficult time creating space to take a jump shot. There were a few times he tried to be aggressive and allude his defender by dribbling, but he just wasn’t quick enough. I forgot who was playing D on him, but he was easily able to move laterally and get in front of Porzingis on any dribble attempt forcing him to give up the ball. If Porzingis can’t be creative with guys in the summer league, then he’s going to have a pretty tough time during the season. Going to be watching this very closely the next few games.
This is obvious, but he is freaking skinny. He needs to put some meat on those bones if he plans on being anywhere near the paint.
The Ugly:
Not a good rebounder. The problem isn’t with his boxing out, he’s actually really good at it. I just don’t see ANY desire from him to go after the board himself. He’s content with just creating space for his teammates to grab the rebound. He’ll get a few “Allan Houston rebounds” here and there (the ones that just bounce into his hands). The instinct is just not there... so far at least.
Overall, not a bad outing. You can see the potential, but there are plenty elements of the game he needs to work on. The good thing is, he’s committed - all I hear about him is how much of a gym rat he is.
I think “project” is the perfect label. When I watched Stanley Johnson, Winslow, Okafor in the Orlando league and Russell/Towns yesterday, I clearly got the impression that these were NBA ready players.
I did not have the same genuine reaction watching Porzingis, which is okay. That is exactly the expectation. He’s a project and this was just the first game.
Quick note on Jerian Grant - great feel for the game. Needs to work on not leaving his feet while passing. I liked that he got to the line a lot too.
Game 2 is 8:30 PM on Monday.
It’s Porzingis Time!!!
Summer League kicks off today at 4:30 PM against the Spurs.
Check out the roster above - filled with a bunch of guys that are going to be on the team this year: Thansis, Cleanthony, Langston, Jerian, Ledo (possible), Kristaps, Travis (possible)
Can’t wait to see our rookies.
love it, like Lou a lot.
We have the $2.8 million room exception left. Would like to add a shooter.
