BACKSTORY STUFF:
in Juniper’s village, when men reach a certain age, they are sent away to either work for the King, or find other work.
this village was also incredibly religious, but heteronormative; essentially, they thought the reason sex was created was for the creation of humans, so it's kinda beat into everyone's heads at a very early age that a woman eventually needs to find a man, and that a man eventually needs to find a woman.
related to the first point, Juniper had always felt somewhat out of place, other than not fully being able to process that he's queer. he had trouble getting along with his peers, and felt trapped where he lived.
every man and every woman is given certain "training" for their jobs as adults before they reach the age where they go out and get jobs. so, Juniper basically just left his village early, with just enough training to climb the ranks of the Kingdom's order.
(I should also add this is not a dig on Christianity or anything I think Christian values and the church where I live are all fine, this is just a character backstory, nothing more.)
