I had a shower thought…remembrance? recall?
Anyway…I used to draw when I was in grade school. I created a comic that was basicaly Naruto replacing the characters with my friends and classmates. It was awesome, because I was super into it and my classmates were kind of into it. It was fun because I was creating something that people were interested in. Fast forward to the day we were watching something that didn’t matter. I was looking through my comic just to see what to add next to the story. The substitute teacher (who was a classmates mom…it was a private school run by most of the parents of the students) noticed me not paying attention and decided to take my comics away from me. Not only did she take them, she threw them in the garbage and gave me a blue slip (basically the “you fucked up” card in that school).
I sat there still unsure what just happened. What did I do? What did I do wrong? Why did you toss away something I created?
I ended up crying in front of the whole class over comics. To them it was probably silly but to me it meant something. The sub was nice enough to return the comics to me, but I never picked up a drawing utensil or those comics until 10 years later.
My girlfriend draws a lot and I wanted to draw. In fear of being bad, I was nervous to start, but it’s super fun. I was trying to recall why I am so nervous to pick up a pen and paper and I guess that’s why. The idea that someone will just throw it out anyway.
Point of my story: Encourage art.
Don’t toss it aside without explanation. At least give constructive critiscm. This is written as a reminder to me, but also to someone who just wants to be negative to someone else. You might ruin something they love, something they are proud of. Don’t discourage, encourage.

How To: Comics by Santiago Esparza Serna (more)
COLUMBUS, Ohio - When you “lose yourself” inside the world of a fictional character while reading a story, you may actually end up changing your own behavior and thoughts to match that of the character, a new study suggests.
Researchers at Ohio State University examined what happened to people who, while reading a fictional story, found themselves feeling the emotions, thoughts, beliefs and internal responses of one of the characters as if they were their own - a phenomenon the researchers call “experience-taking.”
They found that, in the right situations, experience-taking may lead to real changes, if only temporary, in the lives of readers.
