it's important to me that ilya remains captain of the centaurs after shane joins, but i have a specific picture in my mind of shane being assistant captain and being generally harmless and super chill , so the centaurs see him as like the chill parent (something to be said about shane being content in letting someone else, specifically His Someone, have the reins and enjoying not being in charge) but then ilya has to be out for a few weeks for like health or smth so shane goes into Captain Mode and the centaurs are scared shitless by how intense he gets all of a sudden. the most intense drills of all time. the hardest plays they've ever heard of. the strictest practices on earth. and they suddenly understand why shane led the metros/voyagers to victory so many times and why ilya treats him like the boss in their relationship. and then as soon as ilya comes back he turns it off and the centaurs are like Oh Thank Fuck Because What The Hell Was That

so i've seen a few posts discussing the bonfire scene in the show and shane's reaction (or lack therof) to ilya talking about his mom's death. and like sure maybe there's something deep here about shane holding space for ilya to be vulnerable and be himself and thats part of why shane doesnt give strong reactions like an immediate "oh my god I'm so sorry" or a rushed embrace for comfort. but to me the reason he keeps his reactions to a minimum is actually so much simpler. and its not just that he's unmasked here.
if i'm shane (autistic), I'm so floored by the ilya-is-laying-his-head-in-my-lap of it all and i want to make sure i do not do anything to fuck that up. he laid his head in my lap while i was staying relatively still, and if i move too much it might make this position uncomfortable for him. or it might spook him back into his usual guarded demeanor. it might jostle him out of this moment and remind him that talking about his feelings is something he doesn't do. i am so thrilled by the intimacy of ilya talking about his family and his feelings. i want to hold onto that so bad. i must not spook him. and naturally the best way to do this is to stay as still as possible and say very little so i avoid saying anything wrong. to me his minimal reaction is just his best effort to hold onto this precious moment in the only way he can think of. i don't think it has to be deeper than that.
i love you.
