you're sooooo right haha, they may share a few major life events but then smash will be like "so then we all got vaporized by beams of light" or game will say "and then i became a station master for nagoya station" and they realize they don't have as much in common as initially assumed lol. multiverse stuff is just so fascinating to me, the concept of the same character’s life taking different routes depending on what does or does not happen, developing different personalities and relationships, but still sharing some core traits. CHEF KISS.

as for their ages, i generally imagine manga to be the youngest (late 20's), then novel (mid 30's), then game (late 30's), then smash (late 40's), then anime (early 50's)!

What's the main differences between each Meta Knight?

UH-OHHHHHHHHHH THE FLOODGATES HAVE OPENED, here are some brief summaries i typed up at lightning speed (thank u for asking lol!!)

game meta knight: the "canon" meta knight. when you think about "meta knight" this is the guy most people probably think of. he represents every canon kirby game (including spin-offs), official merchandise, promotional material, books (such as "it's kirby time", but not manga or novels) and things like kirby cafe and pupupu train. he's cool, brave, good-hearted, and a bit of a dork. that said, he's serious to a fault and a chronic perfectionist, so he can be quite wayward…but when trouble arises, he'll be the first to know and the first to act.

anime meta knight: you know him. you love him. he's the retired war hero from the kirby right back at ya anime. i personally consider the anime and games to be separate, so anything outside of what's actually seen in the anime isn't canon to him in my hcs. on the outside, he's one of the most mild-mannered versions of meta knight. but at his core, he's fiercely righteous, and it can drive him to extremes. with unrivaled patience and resilience, he strongly believes in placing the keys in the hands of the younger generation. (literally. and then the younger generation ate them.)

smash meta knight: the meta knight with the ridiculously deep voice from the super smash bros series. his storyline includes major kirby games (no spin-offs or sub-material) and the events of smash bros. unlike the "canon" kirby universe, various video game franchises co-exist together in smash meta knight's universe. since brawl, he primarily resides at the smash castle to partake in smash tournaments, but he's called to action whenever dreamland is threatened. although he can be brooding, impulsive, and pompous, he's a truly steadfast companion, and ultimately wants to see others reach their greatest potential. his fighting style is much more aggressive than other versions of meta knight.

novel meta knight: the meta knight from the kirby novels by mie takase. his universe consists of the storylines from the novels, some of which include alternate/expanded versions of events from game meta knight's universe. he's a notably more serious, calculated and even potentially cold depiction of meta knight, but he's also one of the most deeply devoted to his crew. he acknowledges he isn't perfect, and can get carried away with things. unlike other versions of meta knight who tend to have a bit of a narcissistic streak, novel meta knight doesn't care for the spotlight, and even detests it. but, he always aspires to be polite (which is sometimes no easy task, given his no-nonsense philosophy).

manga meta knight: these are actually a multitude of guys. there are many kirby mangas, and every meta knight is portrayed differently in them, so that's probably a post for another day lol. but, my personal favourite kirby manga is the mo~retsu pupupu hour series, so that's the one i base my headcanons around. this meta knight is bombastic, flamboyant, pretentious and strictly adheres to his personal code of "love and justice". his universe is basically a chaotic, wacky and lawless mash-up of game meta knight's. things don’t happen the same way as they do in canon, much favouring comedy over drama.

how would peach feel about either gameverse meta or anime meta, i know they're the same guy but i feel she would notice the differences

oh yeah absolutely! she'd probably find game!mk adorable because he's like a miniature version of the one she knows. bro would be flabbergasted, he's not nearly as acclimated to people as smash!mk is lol. anime!mk has a specific air about him, so i think peach would quickly be able to tell he's a respected figure who's been through a lot, so she tries not to giggle over the way he’s wrapped in his cape (she's never seen smash!mk do this) and just has an intelligent conversation with him.

i think they'd both leave a good impression on her, but neither have that same kind of grumpiness and grandiose that she's so used to and has come to find endearing about smash!mk.

what do the other fighters think about metapeach? 🦇🍑

not exactly other fighters, but i imagine the first time meta knight visited the mushroom kingdom with peach outside of battle, all the toads thought he was some kind of super cool celebrity (it's the cape). of course, in time they learn that he's just a dork who gets a little too serious sometimes like dreamland did. meta knight thought he had all this courtly business down, but then he met toadsworth and actually got a bit nervous lol.

i think in general meta knight's friends are glad to see him opening up and allowing himself to give rein to something other than fighting!

any Bayometa/Metanetta headcannons you’ve never mentioned?

HMMMMM, nothing particularly important comes to mind at the moment, but i do like to think that once bayonetta saw meta knight's "real" face, it was OVER for her lol. with his glowing eyes and bat wings, he has that kind of spooky-cute vibe that probably would've reminded her of a stuffed toy she had as a child. good luck keeping her hands off him now! he isn't complaining.

I can understand why meta would be against bowser but what about B Jr. Especially considering hes a child.

Would he go easy on jr or not? Especially when sometimes hes depicted as really young, and other times hes seen as a fairly responsible kid.

that is a good question! it's actually bowser jr. who has beef with meta knight lol, mostly because he's sort of frenemies with kirby and thinks HIS dad (bowser) is WAYYY cooler. so while they don't have a particularly good relationship, you're right, meta knight doesn't go out of his way to admonish him like he would with some of the other villains. he knows it's just kids being kids!

HONESTLY i really should give an honourable mention to meta knight/lucario, i just love how much they respect each other. the handshake is so iconic but my favourite moment is actually probably when lucario gestures for meta knight to wait instead of jumping snake lol, just the fact that meta knight actually listens to him and waits for him to do his thing is amazing. the trust he has in lucario really shows there, as well as simply staying back and fighting with him when he could've gone ahead, especially since he was in such a hurry to retake the halberd. then there's lucario being so thorough about finding potential intruders on the halberd and going along with meta knight to help him retake it in the first place! they hit it off so quickly and support each other at every turn and i love that so much. i also think it's really funny how meta knight gets to shine as the more impulsive one in this duo/ship lol, like this is them 100% to me

yes!! pit is kind of like a son-in-law to meta knight, and that's mostly just me breaking the fourth wall due to sakurai's involvement and love for the kid icarus series lol. i imagine meta knight respects pit as a warrior despite his age, and pit thinks meta knight is cool. judging by his palutena's guidance conversation where pit and viridi toss theories about a maskless meta knight, pit also seems to be curious about him. between pit's vivaciousness and meta knight's stoicism, i see them getting up to all sorts of goofy shenanigans!

IT WOULD BE MY ABSOLUTE PLEASURE ANON. let me just preface with some context lol, basically i translate the concept of brawl meta knight being a "broken" character IRL into him being the champion of the brawl "tournament season" in-universe. he held his title for about 6 years, until the wiiu tournament season began. growing so accustomed to winning and not being given much of a challenge or really any excitement at all, he got into a stale routine and wasn't enjoying smash like he used to. a slump (nerfed), if you will.

then bayonetta appeared. like meta knight in brawl before her, she entered the wiiu tournament absolutely busted. winning every match, stomping out the competition. she had heard of meta knight's past feats and was looking forward to getting matched with him, hoping he could provide the excitement she's been hankering for. but between his supposed rustiness and her very distracting flirting bantering, he did not manage to reclaim his title. it's what happened next that surprised him the most though: he realized he wasn't even thinking about reclaiming his title. the audience seemed to just disappear whenever he fought her, as if the only eyes he wanted on him were hers. she was the first person to make him break a sweat and get him trying his best again, and it was exhilarating.

bayonetta became the reigning champion of the 4th tournament season, and meta knight concurred. they developed a mutual respect for each other, and started meeting up even outside of battle. they made surprisingly fast friends and had a lot to talk about, from their origins and incentives to some surprisingly guarded secrets. neither would say it out loud, but they could tell they shared a similar softness in their hearts beneath the tough exterior…unrelated to the fact they both had a sweet tooth, and would frequently swap bloody rose lollipops and invincible candies like some kind of underground brokers.

the ultimate tournament season eventually rolled along, and it was time for a comeback. even if they weren't particularly high-rank fighters this time around, seeing the two past champions fighting together as doubles partners brought a lot of hype and revenue to the tournaments they entered. especially in the beginning, they were always getting interviewed, doing photo shoots and all sorts of things like that for press. although i headcanon they mostly enter ult tournaments as a team, bayonetta tends to still have the upper edge on meta knight, which keeps him humble lol.

BUT YEAH this is just the general stuff, if i'm talking about them more specifically as a ship then it goes without saying the flirting and tension gets a little heavier lol. meta knight not being able to get his head in the game, doing his best but still fumbling, looking forward to battling bayonetta every day just a little too much, knowing she would be taking the win anyway, and bayonetta just finding him so cute and amusing. i love them in mk's down bad era (wiiu) but i love them in their cunty gothic bi4bi power couple era (ultimate) even more. i also have a playlist for them if you're interested!

From your blog I can tell Meta is or is like a father to Kirby, but like .. what type? Is he strict or does he let Kirby mess around like it’s just an average Tuesday??

GOOD QUESTION but yeah i'd say he leaves kirby to his own devices for the most part! he doesn't want other fighters to think kirby is receiving any favouritism from him. but even though they don't spend all that much time together in smash, kirby knows meta knight would be there for him in an instant if he actually needed him. kirby is quite independent anyway, but i imagine smash kirby to be a bit older than game kirby (more like 15-16), so if anything it's usually KIRBY who's keeping tabs on meta knight just because he likes to pester his dad in a cheeky teenager kind of way lol (even worse when uncle dedede joins in). whenever they get matched up in battle though, they both lock in. meta knight doesn't go easy on kirby and kirby doesn't expect him to. they have a good relationship with a lot of mutual trust and respect.

I'm surprised Meta Knight is friends with Jigglypuff! I always hc'd her and Kirby as being BSFF (Best Smash Friends Forever), so I' m really curious about Jiggly and Meta's friendship.

I'M GLAD YOU ASKED because i've actually been meaning to talk about these two in particular lol! it's really just my personal headcanons for jigglypuff as a character that make me believe she and meta knight would get along. ever since the it's past your bedtime! event in ssb4 where you play as jigglypuff and have to use sing to put some of the kid characters to sleep, i've imagined jiggypuff to be more of a mature character, closer to meta knight's age in human years or gijinka (late 40's). i headcanon that her favourite style of music is bossa nova, which meta knight finds very relaxing to listen to. meta knight isn't a huge fan of big talkers, so their language barrier has never been an issue either. while jigglypuff is cheery and sweet, she's also surprisingly strict and responsible. meta knight is one of the few people who actually acknowledge this about her and take her seriously, so she enjoys his company too.

in my gijinkaverse, she's a songstress at a jazz bar which meta knight frequents. most of the audience is asleep by the end of the show which disheartens her, but meta knight is always still awake, due to his hardwired ability to be on guard for threats. in a way, they're a source of comfort for each other.

my jigglypuff would probably be more on the motherly side towards kirby, but i totally understand your vision too! jigglypuff is such an underrated character in general, i really like her <3

I'll love to know about Meta knight and Lucas's relationship!

one of the many relationships born from SSE! during the confrontation with galleom, meta knight found lucas to be very brave. lucas wanted to thank meta knight for saving his and the pokemon trainer's lives, but meta knight refused to accept it, saying that it was lucas' quick thinking and selflessness towards his friend that turned the tides of the battle. meta knight is a real sucker for some camaraderie lol.

while some fighters might think lucas to be meek, meta knight sees his true character and doesn't hesitate to include him in high-skill team battles, even though he's young. you could say meta knight has a bit of a habit of pinning his hopes and expectations onto the Younger Generation™️, but he's still someone lucas is comfortable going to when he needs to talk, and he appreciates the faith he has in him.

IT IS SUPER IMPORTANT YOU'RE RIGHT THANKS FOR ASKING. here's a chart i made loosely categorizing all of meta knight's relationships in my personal smashverse 🙏

it's kind of a lot, so feel free to ask if you'd like a more detailed explanation about any of these lol. (for example, the belmonts think meta knight is associated with dracula, and meta knight hasn't bothered to clear up the misunderstanding. he actually kind of enjoys screwing with them lol. i imagine meta knight doesn't really care to be seen as a "good guy" or a "bad guy", he just follows his own moral code, regardless of what it looks like to others. though of course, he does give off a heroic impression more often than not.)

as for how many characters i've actually drawn him with, i'd say about 40% of the roster. most of my smash art was done during the peak of ultimate (2018-2021), and i still have a lot of sketches/comics i never finished. but again if there's a specific character you're wondering about, just ask and i'll see if i can dig anything up!
