18 JUN 2014 - The crew of UCGCG BRISTOL BAY work on aids to navigation on Lake Erie, as part of the Coast Guard 9th District's "Operation Spring Restore," 01 May 2014. The operation restored over 1,200 navigational aids and included five cutters, five aids to navigation teams, and two small boat stations, as well as inter-agency partners, including the Canadian Coast Guard. 06 JUN 2014 - Today marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II. On that day, thousands of American troops landed on Omaha and Utah beaches, often under withering German fire. Frequently, they were brought there by Coast Guard operated landing craft. Other Coast Guardsmen, like the crew of USCG-6, pictured above, made up Rescue Flotilla One, a squadron of 60 wooden-hulled, 83' cutters assigned throughout the invasion force. They operated close to the beachhead, and rescued over 400 men from the English Channel during the D-Day, most from disabled or sinking landing craft. 04 JUN 2014 - Boat crew members from Station Cortez pull a man from the water, 20 nautical miles west of Anna Maria Island, Florida, 01 June 2014. He and his three companions were rescued from the overturned hull of their vessel by STA Cortez’s 45’ Response Boat-Medium. A MH-60 Jayhawk from Air Station Clearwater also participated in the search.
02 JUN 2014 - GM3 Samuel A. Peikert receives the Silver Lifesaving Medal from CAPT Steve C. Truhlar, chief of operations for the Coast Guard Atlantic Area, 29 May 2014. He received the award for his heroic action while off-duty on 14 July 2012, when he pulled an injured father and son from the San Marcos River. Read the full award citation here.
30 MAY 2014 - ADM Paul F. Zukunft succeed ADM Robert J. Papp as the 25th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard today, in a change of command ceremony held at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC. Zukunft used the opportunity to unveil his Commandant's Direction 2014, The document introduces his three guiding principles: Service to Nation, Duty to People, and Commitment to Excellence.
Zukunft previously served as Commander, Coast Guard Pacific Area. In 2010, he served as the Federal On-Scene Coordinator for the Deepwater Horizon Spill, where he directed over 47,000 responders, 6500 vessels, and 120 aircraft. Zukunft's three Command Afloat billets include the cutters Cape Upright, Harriet Lane, and Rush.
03 DEC 2012 - Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne died early on the morning of 02 December 2012, from injuries sustained while conducting a maritime law enforcement mission off the coast of California. BMC Horne, the Executive Petty Officer of the USCGC Halibut (WPB 87340), was approaching a vessel suspected of smuggling drugs in the cutter's small boat, when the target vessel rammed the Coast Guard boat. Horne and another Coast Guardsman were thrown into the water. Horne sustained a traumatic head injury in the process, and was rushed to port, where he was pronounced dead.

SECTOR MIAMI, FL - The Coast Guard accepted delivery of the its first Sentinel class Fast Response Cutter, USCGC Bernard C. Webber, 10 February 2012. These 154' vessels will eventually replace the ships of the 110' Island class, including the USCGC Nantucket pictured in the background. The Sentinel class boasts a number of improvements over their aging predecessors, including a stern launch ramp for its small boat, and mixed-gender berthing. Photo by PO1 Jennifer Johnson.
17SEP11 - Crew members from the 270' USCGC Mohawk (WMEC-913) interdict a self-propelled semi-submersible (SPSS) in the Western Caribbean Sea. The vessel, which transporting cocaine, sank during the encounter. While increasingly common in the Eastern Pacific, this marks only the second time a SPSS has been interdicted in the Caribbean.
27SEP11 - Signalman 1st Class Douglas Munro died 69 years ago this day. He gave his life in the Battle of Guadalcanal, while leading the rescue of 500 Marines who were trapped on a Japanese beachhead. For his supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. He is the only Guardian to receive this award in the history of the service.
PORTSMOUTH, VA - Master Chief Petty Officer Gordon Muise, the first rating force master chief for the maritime enforcement specialist rating, retires 15 SEP 2011, after 32 years of service. MECM Muise served in this billet since DEC 2008.

18 JUL 2011 - The Coast Guard Compass explains qualification insignia. The Tactical Law Enforcement Badge, worn by qualified members of the USCG's TACLETs, features heavily in the article. Interestingly, MARSEC4 just ran a piece last week about the controversy over possibly issuing the badge to other units in the Deployable Operations Group.

PORT ANGELES, WA - Guardians from Air Station Port Angeles honor the crew of CG 6017, 07JUL11. Three crew members died when their HH-60 Jayhawk crashed off La Push, WA on 07JUL10. Deceased that day were:

PO1 Adam C. Hoke
PO2 Brett M. Banks
A fourth crew member, Lt. Lance D. Leone, survived and is currently working to establish a memorial to his fallen comrades.
13JUL11 - On a personal note, today marks the one year anniversary of my shipping off to Coast Guard Basic Training. To celebrate, I decided to post the first episode of the Coast Guard Channel's "It's Just Eight Weeks." Though a little dated (I don't remember the Company Commanders wearing Bravo's when I got off the bus), it does a pretty good job of summing up the experience.
