#OTD in 1942, Lt. Butch O'Hare became an ace when he was credited for shooting down five bombers attacking USS Lexington. Butch was killed in action in 1943. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is named in his honor.

*For more detail: Byron, the grandson of David McCanles (McCandless, above), murdered by Wild Bill, became a commodore (naval rank, not the 1970s band). Bruce, Byron's son, was an admiral who served at Guadalcanal and earned a Medal of Honor while captaining the USS San Francisco (a ship my great uncle was serving on at the time, after surviving Pearl Harbor (this uncle did not have good luck)) after it was torpedoed and shot to hell.

Bruce McCandless II, grandson of the commodore, became the first person to do an untethered space walk.

Ep 105 – The Thin Red Line – Guadalcanal But Make It Anti-War

Here is a war movie in which the director did not especially want to direct the war parts. Terrence Malick, a former philosophy professor and noted avoider of storyboards, made The Thin Red Line (1998) as an art film that happens to be set on Guadalcanal. The battle scenes are scored like tragedies, even when the Americans are winning. George Clooney shows up for approximately forty-five seconds with very long eyelashes.
