Am I the only one totally cringing from the whole "Davina was the only one who kept me from murder" thing? Like idk it's just so reused in this show and in this genre. I love Kolvina but?

Normally I’d be 100% with you on this, because yes it’s totally the most overused trope to make the “bad” guy a suitable love interest and incite awwws (not that I don’t ship my fair share of those I’m just trying to be conscious about it). But I’m gonna go out and say something that anything who doesn’t like kolvina will cringe over. I don’t think it’s a random trope thrown into their relationship, rather something that totally makes sense with Kol’s character. Here me out (and hopefully it makes sense).

Kol says that as a vampire went through “a bit of a dark period” (”a thousand years” as Davina reminds us) aka his life when he wasn’t staked (but it is good to remember he wasn’t murdering psychotically 24/7 - that whole early 20th century plot in 2x09 and that web series no on watched). Kol attributes this to a loss of magic and needing a high somehow, which he gets again when he’s in the body of Kaleb. As he’s dying he says “The ironic thing is that I actually preferred this go-round. Being a witch. No heightened emotion, no bloodlust. It was just me. For a while, anyway.” This leads us into the tvd/to mythos that vampirism heightens everthing (ex. Caroline’s neurotic tendencies). For Kol that urge for magic was replaced with bloodlust and all of that was bundled with a resentment towards his family, heightened resentment. By the time we got to the 2000′s in Mystic Falls Kol was driven primarily by that anger after time and time again not being a priority to his family, and about here I’ll throw in the Klaus quote ”all of your mischief was just attempts for attention.” I’m just trying to establish Kol’s vampirism here. In no means am I saying he didn’t love killing, I’m just reinforcing the reasoning to his character that was glossed over in tvd when he was just a villain, because it helps make sense of why Kol’s relationship with Davina makes sense in the way you mentioned.

When Kol being resurrected was just a hope I had been talking to a friend who thought it would kill his relationship with Davina, but it got me thinking about how it really wouldn’t. At that point the most heartfelt scene we got with them was their final dance (which was pretty damn heartfelt but more inference because up until that point we hadn’t gotten an unguarded emotional Kol with Davina). Just from that I knew they’d be fine if two things happened: 1. Kol truly loved Davina even if he wouldn’t place that word on it yet & 2. his family would still stick with them like they did in his final days (final days being the mini arc in 2x13-2x14). 1 because of Kol’s history with just how heightened everything is with him (I would still bet he had anger issues back as a mortal in 10th century) and yes love is an emotion (and lbr the vampires on this show get really into their love so it’s basically canon a tvd/to vampire’s with love interests love them 5x more). 2 because that takes away the trigger for his anger and resentment.

When we get Kol back in 3x11+ it’s no question he’s all in with Davina. Recounting everything he does to show he cares deeply for her would take too long. So yes he loves her, but she’s also the first person in a thousand years with no obligation to to love him but still does with no reservations about it romantically or platonically (if you doubt the effect her I love you had just look at his expression). I can’t think of a love romantic novel way to say this, but she’s his person. Unconditionally and without shame. So now take that thing I said about emotions being heightened and apply that to what I just said. Kol really really cares about Davina.

In 3x15 is where we’re getting the beginnings of the could be cringeworthy lines like “trying to be good for your girlfriend” as Kol says he’ll opt bagged blood leading up to Kol telling D “it wasn’t the magic that made me better, Davina. It was you.” Now, this line is the epitome of the trope I’m trying to justify but it really does work for their relationship and for Kol’s character established way back when he had that horrible haircut in tvd, we just have to break it down a little. True, it wasn’t the magic that made him into a more functioning person but it was mortality and what happened when he had that short time without heightened everything. He made a healthy connection to someone, and this is something that would not have worked if he was a vampire. He fell in love with Davina with no vampirism weighing him down, and I genuinely do not believe it could have happened the way it did at the intensity it unfolds to have anytime he was a vampire. So he made that very human solid steady connection with someone while he was a witch and that connection carries with him over when he’s resurrected as vampire. That’s his link to humanity if the going were to get rough (and yes the going gets very rough for him).

Now we’re going to delve into what he says before he kills Van after he’s unable to resurrect Davina, “she was the only thing keeping me from being… well… me” (s.o. to natebuzz for tweeting that ominous quote and telling a fan to just wait until next week). Kol looked absolutely broken when Davina died up until they brought her spirit back, but he wasn’t angry. His family was helping him, and they promised they would help bring her back. That switch comes when Davina’s soul is torn apart thanks to Freya and Elijah. He loses Davina for good, and by his brother and sister. Those were the two things that mattered to Kol, Davina and a respect from his family members, and him those two things vanished in the course of a few minutes.

Kol going off the rails because Davina is gone makes sense with his character and the relationship they had. Kol as a vampire and his bloodlust is easy to set off, but with Davina he had a connection to humanity that held him back. This spiraling is only going to be worse because in his eyes his family has betrayed him ( and that familial connection that is vital to Kol’s character is fractured and with it his only hope of getting past Davina’s murder without reverting to how he is without anyone there for him). I doubt Kol had the time to think through everything I just did on his way to kill Van, but what he says makes valid sense. His relationship with Davina kept his level and happy, and that’s the Kol he wants to be (tb to that quote earlier about liking the witch go around because it was just him without the heightened extras). He has for so much of his life been a Kol drowned out by vampirism and bitterness that he didn’t to be plain Kol often, but with Davina and that human connection he got to go back to it (again, I’m not saying he didn’t have fun as a vampire but it wasn’t his ideal version of himself). Kol says “well… me” and he sees himself, driven purely by anger at that point, as that psychotic maniac because that’s who he’s been solely painted as for hundreds of years. With the way Kol’s life turned out Davina was the only one he had deep enough of a connection with (I’m not ignoring his relationship with his family I’m just acknowledging that it wasn’t yet at a point where he could completely buy into always and forever again and let that be his humanity - even before they killed D) to bring him back down from that type of anger.

I hope that rambling got my point across? And I’m sorry this is much longer of a reply than I’m sure you were expecting. It’s just interesting to me that “I’m better because of you” trope applies to them in a way that isn’t cringeworthy and makes so much sense.
