#lol i really need to try watching Murder She Wrote; it plays late at night and I have only caught mere minutes of random episodes#so thad and i don't understand the appeal just yet but hopefully i will once i actually have time to watch

I'm so glad you asked (you didn't but i am making a post about it anyway)

This is part of my Ray was accidentally queer coded from the start of his run. This panel is from his 1992 mini. All these detectives have queer relevance. Sherlock Holmes is obviously the most famous of these you're hard pressed to find someone who doesn't ship Holmes with Watson, Agatha Christie has some heavily coded books too, Perry Mason was played by a closeted gay man in hollywood and now that brings us to Murder She Wrote.

I've written Ray for a really long time so I do actually play up his enjoyment of murder she wrote. this is the only mention of it in his canon but I think it's very important to him especially as a gay man. The Ray was written in 1992 so it's safe to say that for the majority of his canon it's set in the 90s and happens in the 90s. Since we have an age for Ray in his origin comic we can pinpoint the year he was born, 1974. This is really significant and we'll get to murder she wrote in a minute.

Imagine you're a young queer man and you're growing up in the 80s and you're in your teens discovering your queer identity in the 1990s. As a young man in the queer community you're heavily effected by the AIDS epidemic. Even if you're in the closet you're taking in all the stigmatization of gay men because of this epidemic. There's a whole generation of queer men that are dropping like flies. Perhaps it prompts you to stay closeted and to have sex with Dinah, but let's get to murder she wrote.

It's a show that in large is just a little quirky senior citizen solving murders but in this era of the 90s had a HUGE gay fan base. Which is important to my "ray was queer coded the whole time" agenda. What teenage boy would be watching murder she wrote if he wasn't queer?

Angela Lansbury has a strong history of advocacy with the queer community. Her first marriage was to a gay man and she never held that against him. When the AIDS epidemic was in it's height she was a dedicated advocate. She did public fund raisers and was the face of campaigns. She raised millions for AIDS research in a time where gay men were stigmatized she supported them. Murder she wrote had always had a large queer fan base despite the show never having a queer character on screen.

When you're a young queer person like Ray was in a highly stigmatized time for gay men I think it's only natural he'd latch on to this little old lady show if he was seeing that little old lady support people like him so strongly.

Time period of writing and knowing your history is really important when you read a work. "Oh hey what was going on in the 90s, why was Ray in to these specific detectives??"

I just would also like to add on to this beacuse I was just reminded by Jet (thanks babes) of the camp nature of murder she wrote, they had a drag episode, they have several cases with very clearly coded queer characters (even an ace one!) but there were no openly queer characters on TV until 91 and MSW ended in 95 after 10 years on air. They also employed TONS of queer actors!
