Hiatus Notice
I was going to wait until Thursday when I leave, but my heart’s just not in it after some drama in another ring, so I’m putting all of my muses on hiatus until I return from San Japan on Monday.
ARRRGH!

No… my store is open late for a reason. I never could motivate myself to get up early, unless the work needing to be done was profitable.
I’m surprised you’re not a morning person, though. Aren’t schools open early?
[smiles sheepishly] You’d think I’d be a morning person…but no. It’s a struggle and I have to rely on caffeine to keep me awake until ten o’clock.
I’m sure the kids like watching movies in the morning, then... they’re not usually awake yet either.
At least you’re both in it together. [gets his cup from the barista and gestures towards a table] want to sit?
“really? do i look stupid?”
“I’m not joking,” Arthur deadpanned, and picked up the instrument. “This really is called a sextant.”
“What, do I seem like I enjoy that kind of shallow humour; that I’d be the type to try and get you to say an inappropriate word? I’m offended, frankly.”

Mogens continued to quickly sketch some rough ideas based on the creatures Arthur showed him. He hoped he wasn’t taking up too much of Arthur’s time, but he really was helpful.
“Yes, thank you for your help.” Mogens nodded vaguely, concentrating on his work. “After I show him these designs, I may come back here to check that book out. Is there any way you can put it on hold for me?”
Arthur briefly peered over at what Mogens was doing. “Impressive. You work efficiently.” He said no more, as the other seemed to be engrossed in it.
“Not a problem. You could even take it with you if you want. I’ll just put your name down for it.”
Mogens stepped back, realizing that he had zoned out with his work. “I- sorry. Got distracted. Thank you for the compliment. I would appreciate it if I can take it with me. You’re sure nobody else will need it in the meantime?”
"I was told that the roof in this section of buildings might need some repairs. Have you noticed any leaks?"
Ah, leaks? Ludwig was sick to the back teeth of dealing with it - unfortunately, yes, his roof was in dire need of repair, and it would seem he would need to temporarily close his business to ensure it would be fixed.
“Yes.” He grumbled, seeming somewhat fatigued, “I’ve done all I can to stop it from ruining everything. Shall I show you where it is?”
demutigersoldat:

“Yes, please lead the way.” Eventually, Mogens would need to make his way onto the roof to repair the problem, but It was best if he knew in advance where any soft spots in the wood were located.
“I apologize that this has impacted your business.” He was not the person responsible for the leaking ceiling. It was, in fact, the age of the building. However, his family had built most of the houses and stores in Gramina hundreds of years ago, so he felt somewhat personally responsible for anything that fell into disrepair, even though it was bound to happen. “I assure you, I can repair it as quickly as possible so as not to continue to impact your customers’ experience.”
As appreciative of the apology as Ludwig was, he did understand that it was simply an accident and something that, luckily, Mogens could repair. There was no point in creating a grudge, and so Ludwig was quick to offer, “There is no need to apologise, these things can happen to the best of us.”
With that in mind, he lead the other through and into the back, the kitchen where the damage was located. He would lying if he said he knew anything about the matter, and so simply remains silent, as to let the other work and surmise exactly what had gone wrong and where. But not before adding, “thank you, for coming out.”
“Of course.” He spoke more as if it were his duty to repair the roof than it was a favor. He inspected the kitchen and what exactly had caused the leak, writing down a few measurements.
“I thought it might be the support beam, but it’s actually just some rotted wood. I can replace it right now. I have everything I need with me, I’ll just need to work on your roof for a little while. With your permission, obviously.”
"Bonjour, monsieur! How are you today?"
@dancingdaydreamer
“Ah, hello. I’m doing well enough. How can I help you?” He stumbled over his words a bit, not used to being greeted so cheerfully.
dancingdaydreamer:
Offering a dainty smile, a light giggle past her lips, as the other seemed a little taken off guard - she could be a bit much sometimes, so Josephine would apologise later for that.
“Glad to know, and I’m in no need for help, Monsieur, I just thought to say hi! I’ve seen you around but..never really introduced myself-” rambling, again - she was going to bore him to death before she got to her point, “anyway- um…yeah, I’m Josephine!”
He appreciated that she seemed so willing to speak, since he was a quiet person by nature. “I’m Mogens. I am a carpenter here in Gramina.” He offered a shy smile, outstretching his hand in order to shake hers.
(・□・;) = What makes the character uncomfortable
Mogens finds topics of love and relationships to be pretty awkward, but I think what makes him most uncomfortable is when people ask him questions that he doesn’t know the answer to or can’t find the answer. It’s not that he has to be right, but that he has to be prepared. He gets uncomfortable if he has to think too long about something or if the answer is not what they expected.
“really? do i look stupid?”
“I’m not joking,” Arthur deadpanned, and picked up the instrument. “This really is called a sextant.”

“Oh, you’re right. Those motifs would be a good idea. I could probably include them close to his quarters or somewhere that he would see them daily.” Mogens nodded, pulling out a piece of paper and sketching out an idea quickly. Despite the quick drawing, it was obvious he was an expert in such designs.
“I’ll have to consult him about the sea monsters, too. I could probably research some mythological ones, though. I’m not very good at creating fictional creatures myself. Do you have a book with illustrations of such creatures? I could show him some ideas based on those to get his opinion…”
“Oh yes, definitely. Just wait a moment, please.” He left and quickly came back with a thick glossary of mythology to do with the sea. Of all the subsections in the library, Arthur knew that one best, hence his efficiency.
He placed it on the table right beside the sextant, and opened it to begin thumbing through random pages, pausing on each one of them to display each image to Mogens. “Does this work?”
Mogens continued to quickly sketch some rough ideas based on the creatures Arthur showed him. He hoped he wasn’t taking up too much of Arthur’s time, but he really was helpful.

“Yeah. He seemed to know his stuff, though. Makes me even more nervous.” Mo raised an eyebrow, wondering how exactly Arthur knew this much about ships, though he didn’t push it any further.
“I’m not too concerned about where to carve the designs so much as what to carve. As you said, some look gaudy and others are hard to see. What I carve will determine how impressive this officer looks.” Mo paused, “I hadn’t thought about the trail boards, though.” The gears were obviously running in Mo’s head. He didn’t often show this side to others since he was rather plain and simple in both manner and speech. When he had a problem to solve, though, his mind could be seen working behind his eyes quite clearly.
“I thought learning more about ships would give me inspiration, but it’s only confused me further. I know what not to carve where, but not what to carve.”
Arthur shrunk beneath Mogens’ odd stare. Normally he’d stand taller to at least project some dignity, but Mogens had caught him in one too many odd situations, so Arthur couldn’t help but be embarrassed.
“Well, it’s narrowed it down a bit, at least?” He tried to say reassuringly. “If might is what you wish to emphasize, perhaps the designs could be based on weaponry, but that’s not very aesthetically pleasing, is it…hmm..how about stylised sea monsters? Though if you went with that, you should probably consult him in case he thinks it might bring bad luck.” Sailors and captains alike were very superstitious; after all, they spent most of their lives depending on a glorified curved plank to keep them safe from the ocean and all its dangers.
“Ah, and since he’s a naval officer it would probably be a nice touch to include motifs of his sovereign.”
“Oh, you’re right. Those motifs would be a good idea. I could probably include them close to his quarters or somewhere that he would see them daily.” Mogens nodded, pulling out a piece of paper and sketching out an idea quickly. It’s an easy mistake.
