It felt nice when Kono slipped her fingers between Danny’s, and he gave her another reassuring squeeze as she told him Tony was no competition.
Tony still seemed suspicious when Kono insisted Danny was a friend, nothing to do with ‘work’, and he smiled confidently when she said it was more to do with pleasure. But Tony wouldn’t budge, telling her he wanted a word away from Danny, and the blonde was hesitant to let go of her hand and let her walk away. If he had compromised her cover by just being there he would feel awful, and moreover he might have to leap to her defence any second.
Kono and Tony had a stiff conversation, and from what Danny could hear he would need to have his acting skills on point. He wanted to drag the other man away from his friend when he saw him touch Kono, but he held steady and glowered at the guy instead.
Tony left and the Hawaiian woman returned to their table, apologising and thanking Danny quietly. She quickly changed the subject away from what had happened, and Danny got that any discussion was probably best saved for later when in private.
"Uh, yeah, the new guys,” he nodded, going back to their previous conversation. “They’re fitting in well so far, but I guess time will tell.”
Kono burst out laughing and Danny creased his brow, not understanding her reaction. She flicked her eyes towards the bar before telling him they were being watched, and Danny let her know with his expression that he understood. Their act was not over tonight, not just yet.
The food arrived and Danny changed the subject to softer things, filling Kono in on the wider Ohana which made her smile. She turned up the flirting and Danny followed, leaning in closer and putting on the charm, smiling, winking and joking to help Kono make it all more realistic.
The thing was… It all felt oddly natural, like this was how they normally interacted. He and Kono had always been good friends, and there were times when they had bordered on flirtation in the past, particularly before Adam. But this felt right, not false, and that in itself left Danny feeling confused inside. He pushed those thoughts to one side and concentrated on the task at hand.
When they finished their food, Kono moved around to his side of the booth, moving in close. He body language and expression were playful, and Danny relaxed into character as Trace’s love interest. Her arm slipped under his jacket and he shivered, though not from the cold, and her breath was hot against his ear as she apologised.
“Huh?” Danny began to ask, but suddenly Kono’s mouth was on his and she was kissing him with intent.
His natural reaction was to hesitate, but his brain quickly kicked in and reminded him to play along. He closed his eyes and kissed back despite his confusion, relaxing into it and sliding his tongue into her mouth. He lost himself to the kiss, forgetting everything else around them.
When Kono pressed her body against Danny’s he automatically slid his arms around her waist, pulling her closer. A voice in the back of his head told him not to let this go too far for the sake of their friendship, and it took a moment for his common sense to conquer his own personal feelings. He cracked one eye open to see if the group of men were still watching them, and quickly formulated a plan to allow them to leave without appearing too suspicious.
Danny increased the intensity of the kiss, simultaneously reaching out to push the table back and allow more space. It made a loud scraping sound, attracting attention from a few people around the restaurant which was his intention, and before Kono could pull back to find out what was going on his was grasping her hips and pulling her over to straddle his lap.
Danny figured this was the sort of guy Daniel was, not giving a shit about where he was and how brash and rude he might come off to others, the sort of guy Trace would be attracted to, and he went with it. One hand explored her body as the other grasped her hair and pulled her down into their kiss, and he felt her grind down against him even as his body reacted to the friction. Their make out session grew more and more heated until his plan finally came to fruition.
“Uh, excuse me?” an annoyed voice came from next to their table, interrupting the scene.
Danny kissed Kono for a few more seconds before breaking away and glaring at the guy.
“This is a family establishment, we can’t have this,” the man gestured to the two of them, “happening here. I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” He tapped his assistant manager’s name tag officiously.
Danny huffed, looking Kono up and down as she still sat in his lap. “We’re gonna have to take this back to our room, baby,” he grumbled, squeezing her ass and lifting her up and off him. “Seems like these people can’t handle us…”
He threw the money to cover their bill, plus a hefty tip, onto the table before guiding Kono out of the grill with a hand firmly planted on her ass as they continued to flirt and touch. It wasn’t until they were in Kono’s car and a couple of blocks away that he let out a deep breath of relief. He prayed to God that Kono hadn’t felt his hard on when she’d been straddling him, that could lead to so much embarrassment and awkwardness, but she seemed relaxed enough.
“Okay,” Danny sighed, running his hands back through his hair. “I need to know everything…”
Kono was grateful Danny was playing along and even a bit surprised as he hoisted her into his lap. She couldn’t help her own reaction as he pulled her down into the kiss, her hips grinding down into Danny’s lap.
The kisses intensified, as did the air around them. Kono wasn’t sure it was an act any longer as she felt a surge of emotions bubbling to the surface. A stranger’s voice finally broke up the makeout session and while she was grateful, she was also a bit disappointed that it came to an end.
She straightened her clothes and her composure as they headed out to the car. Danny had been a real trooper and she didn’t want to do anything to make him feel awkward or embarrassed. Once they were in the car and down the road, Danny finally broke the silence, asking the all important question she knew was coming.
“I know, I know. Just, let us get back and I’ll explain everything.” Kono gnawed at her lip as she headed down the main road. She glanced in the rear view mirror, mindful of the truck that was following them.
They passed the hotel that Danny had arrived at, heading downtown. Moments later they arrived at a different hotel and Kono parked the car, giving Danny a slight nod to continue playing along.
It was a nicer location, certainly more upscale than the two star dump she was hiding out in. It wasn’t a luxury resort by any stretch, but it was more unassuming than most people would think.
She waved to the desk clerk, smiling at a few bellboys as she headed to the elevators. She hit the top floor button and they made their way towards the room.
As soon as she stepped off the elevator she spotted the young girl hovering around her door. “April? Is everything alright?” Kono approached the girl carefully, mindful that Danny was close behind her.
“Trace, hey,” April brushed her long hair behind her ear. “I came to see if I could get a little something. You know, to get me through the night.” Her eyes shifted towards the floor, “I’ve got a date later and I just need a little help.”
Kono nodded, “Alright, come on in.” She reached in her opposite pocket for a different key card and slipped it in the door. Once inside she turned on the lights and motioned for Danny to have a seat. It was a large penthouse suite with a formal sitting area and bar, including a kitchenette.
She retreated to the bedroom and came back quickly, “Here you go.” Kono handed the girl a small bag of white pills, “Take one now and then another in an hour. That should help. Don’t take the other two for at least another couple of hours and only if you have to. Understand?”
April nodded quickly, “Yes ma’am. Thank you so much!” She hugged Kono before heading out of the room. Kono closed the door, latching the locks before turning around.
Danny was watching her and Kono shook her head, “Before you even ask, it was just caffeine pills. And no, she doesn’t know that. She thinks they are Adderall, and can help her cope with her anxiety and ADD. The worst that will happen is she will be awake all night.”
“I think we need a drink,” Kono walked to the bar and fixed a couple of cocktails before handing Danny a glass and settling down in the chair across from her old friend. She took a sip of the liquor, allowing the alcohol to slide down her throat.
“I’m sure by now, you figured out this is Trace’s place, not mine. Our friends were following us and it was better to not try and lose the tail and let them see us come here.”
Kono settled back, placing her glass on the side table, “As you know, I’ve been helping the FBI try to track down and dismantle a large sex trafficking ring for months now. It’s taken me from city to city and while we have had a lot of success with busting up local rings the overall network has remained elusive.
We finally got a lead on a man named Pedro Sanchez. A Mexican national who came into our country over a decade ago. He started out smuggling immigrants across the border and over time he’s expanded his empire to include drugs, money laundering, gambling, and now sex trafficking.
He managed to stay off the radar for so long because his operation is unlike anything the FBI has ever seen. It’s a play on what we saw on the island, but much more complex.
He targets young runaways or homeless teens. Mostly girls, but he’s not above taking in a boy if the opportunity presents itself. They seek out their targets, watch them, do a little background and then formulate a plan.
They set up elaborate schemes and plots to get in good with a girl. Maybe they stage a mugging or an attack and the second guy comes to her rescue. She becomes enamored with him. Her own shining knight. He becomes her protector, takes care of her, makes her believe he loves her.
He eventually puts her up in a hotel, buys her expensive gifts, gets her accustomed to the finer things. Then he slowly begins to introduce her to his “friends”. And that she can do these “Favors” for more clothes, more money, more drugs or whatever it is that they can control her with.
Before she knows it, the girl is being turned out for tricks. Some of them are so naive, they don’t even realize what’s happening. And because they are runaways or homeless they are scared of going to anyone for help.”
Kono reached for her drink, hoping the alcohol would wash away the horror of her own words, “April, the girl you just met, she’s- she’s one of them. I, uh, I kind of help the girls out. Officially, I’m here to help keep them in line, but I do what I can for them. When I can.
Tony, the guy you met at the bar, he’s Pedro’s right hand man. He keeps tab on the personnel, so to speak. What he was not so subtly suggesting, was that you come to work for the operation. To become one of those guys I was talking about, running scams and cons to lure in new girls.”
She closed her eyes, shaking her head as the bile began to rise in her throat as she realized the horror of what she was presenting to her friend, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I can’t ask you to be a part of this. I never should have brought you here.”
