처참하다: miserable, wretched 몹시 무서워 떨릴 정도로 슬프고 끔찍하다. Sad and dreadful to such a degree that one trembles out of fear.

야비하다: mean, underhand, base 성질이나 행동이 천하고 교활하다. One's personality or behavior being vulgar and sly.

부지불식간에: unconsciously, unwittingly, unknowingly, unawares 생각하지도 못하고 알지도 못하는 사이. An instant when one is neither conscious nor aware of something.

소탐대실 (小貪大失): Incurring a great loss by pursuing a small profit. 작은 것을 탐하다가 큰 것을 잃음. suffer a big loss in going after a small gain.

연막작전 (煙幕作戰): smoke operation 어떤 사실을 숨기기 위하여 교묘하고 능청스러운 말이나 수단 따위를 써서 상대편이 갈피를 못 잡게 하는 일을 비유적으로 이르는 말.

유구무언 (有口無言): no excuse to offer 변명할 말이 없음. The state of having nothing to say as an excuse.

좌우하다: determine 어떤 일에 영향을 주어 지배하다. To influence and dominate something.

각계각층 (各界各層): diverse fields and classes 사회의 여러 분야와 계층. Various fields and classes in a society.

일맥상통 (一脈相通): having something in common, being in line with, being in the same vein 생각, 상태, 성질 등이 서로 통하거나 비슷해짐. A state in which one shares a certain thought, condition, quality, etc. with another.

범상하다: common, mediocre 중요하거나 특별하지 않고 평범하다. Ordinary, not important or special.

백발백중 (百發百中): being always right 무슨 일이든지 틀림없이 잘 들어맞음. A state of being always right in everything such as prediction, guessing, etc.

쌀쌀맞다: brusque, distant, icy 사람의 성격이나 태도가 다정하지 않고 차갑다. One's personality or attitude being cold, not kind.

이비인후과: otorhinolaryngology, department of otorhinolaryngology 귀, 코, 목구멍, 숨통, 식도에 생기는 질병을 전문적으로 치료하는 의학 분야. 또는 그 분야의 병원. A field of medical science that treats diseases of the ears, nose, throat, bronchus, and gullet, or the department of the hospital that is in charge of the field.

씀씀이: spending, expense 돈이나 물건, 마음 등을 쓰는 정도. The extend to which one spends money, goods, etc. or shows generosity.

옹졸하다: narrow-minded; intolerant; petty 마음이 너그럽지 못하고 생각이 좁다. Not generous and having a narrow view of things.

그르치다: spoil, ruin 어떤 일이나 형편을 좋지 않게 하거나 잘못되게 하다. To make a matter or situation worse or go wrong.

집단적: being collective 어떤 일을 집단으로 하거나 집단을 이루는 것. An act of doing something as a group, or something that consists of a group.

원색적: being raw 비난이나 표현 등을 숨김없이 모두 드러내는 것. The quality of criticizing or expressing without reserve.

적막하다: quiet 아무 소리 없이 조용하고 쓸쓸하다. Silent and lonesome with no sound being heard.

How To Make Commands & Requests Using: (으)세요, 아/어 주다, & -지 마세요

V + (으)세요 = Please (verb)

usage:

- to politely request, suggest something, or make a command

- can also be used to end a question to make the question more polite. (Requesting info)

- Ex: 영어 하세요? = can you speak English?

Ends in consonant - 으세요

Ends in vowel - 세요

- 세요 is a shortened version of -셔요, which comes from the suffix -시. -시 is used to make verbs and adjectives more polite

- (으)십시요 is the same thing as -(으)세요, but is a very formal way of giving commands.

Examples:

거기 앉으세요 - Please sit there.

내일 시험이 있으니 열심히 공부하세요.

Since there is a test tomorrow, please study hard.

물 더 주세요 - Please give me more water

아/어 주다 - Give; To do something for someone

usage:

- 주다 on it’s own means “to give”

- By adding ~아/어 주다 to the stem of a word, you can imply that the action is somehow beneficial to you (or whoever the action is being done for)

- It’s almost as if you’re telling someone to do you a “favor” and do it for you

- Conjugate the first verb before adding 주다

- Usually (으)세요 is added to make your request more polite

> 아/어 주세요 = Please do for me

Examples:

창문을 열어 주세요.

Please open the window. (For me)

선생님은 저에게 설명해 줬어요.

The teacher explained it to me.

아/어 주다 + negative situations

usage:

- 지 말다 is used when telling somebody *not* to do somthing.

- you can put ~아/어 주다 and ~지 말다 together to create the meaning of “please don’t do it for me”

- V -지 말아 주다 (지 말아 주세요)

Examples:

수업 시간 동안 자지 말아 주세요.

Please don’t sleep in my class.

저를 쳐다보지 말아 주세요.

Please don’t stare at me.

-지 마세요 - Don’t do it

usage:

- this is a form of 지 말다, except it’s a different meaning than we just learned

- 지 마 means you are commanding someone not to do something (not for you, but just in general)

- 지 마 + 세요 = polite command

Examples:

가지 마세요 - Please don’t go

너무 빨리 먹지 마세요 - Don’t eat your food too fast

슬퍼하지 마세요 - Please don’t be sad

If you’re learning Korean, you might have encountered the word “어차피” (eo-cha-pi) at some point. It’s a useful word that can be translated to “anyway,” “in any case,” or “after all.” When you use “어차피,” you’re often indicating that something is inevitable or necessary, regardless of other circumstances. To use “어차피”, you simply need to add it to the sentence. E.g. 어차피 늦었으니까 천천히 와. (It’s late anyway, so take your time.) 어차피 다른 선택지가 없어. (There’s no other option anyway.) 그 사람은 어차피 나를 싫어하는 거야. (That person hates me, after all.) “어차피” is often used with grammar like ~(으)니까 or -(으)ㄴ/는데 to add more context. E.g. 어차피 해야 할일이니까 빨리 하고 끝내는게 좋지않겠어요? (Because it’s something you have to do anyway, isn’t it better to hurry up and finish it?) 어차피 시간이 없는데 일찍 가는 게 좋을 거야. (Anyway, since we don’t have much time, it’s better to leave early.) 어차피 지나간 일이니까 다시 말하지 말아요. (Since it’s a thing of the past anyway, let’s not talk about it again.) 어차피 밖에 비가 내리고 있는데 조금더 이야기를 나누자 (It’s raining outside anyway, so let’s talk a little bit more.)

Location Words

Prepositions can be tricky. Here’s a little blurb on some location specific prepositions that might help make things slightly less overwhelming!

Vocabulary

앞에 = in front of

위에 = over; on top of

뒤에 = behind

밑에 = under; below

옆에 = beside; next to

How to Use These Words

To make it easy on your brain, treat these like part of a prepositional phrase! *Note that these location words will always come at the end of the phrase!

자동차 위에 = on the car

침대 밑에 = under the bed

은행 앞에 = in front of the bank

So whatever word you pair these location words with will serve as the other half of your prepositional phrase. Once you get that part down, you can add them to larger sentences!

자동차 위에 고양이가 있어요. = There is a cat on the car.

침대 밑에 괴물이 있어요! = There’s a monster under the bed!

은행 앞에 기다릴 거예요. = I will wait in front of the bank.

How to Practice These Words

This is super easy to do for lots of different vocab lists! The most obvious choice might be describing objects in any kind of room (bedroom, kitchen, classroom, etc.), but if you’re a touch higher level and you want to challenge yourself, find any type of picture and see how many things you can describe in it! If you’ve got a friend to study with, describe a room/picture and have them draw the room/picture based on your descriptions. Then check to see how close you were at the end! This is a really applicable topic, so have fun with it!

안녕, 여러분! Hi everyone! In this vocab lesson, we’re going to learn some Korean loan words and Konglish words! Let’s start!

Loan Words

Loan words are essentially Korean words that sound like and have the same meaning as its English translation. Let’s look at some examples!

Bus = 버스 

Cake = 케이크

Camera = 카메라 

Chocolate = 초콜릿

Hot chocolate = 핫 초콜릿

Cola = 콜라

Cup = 컵

Dress = 드레스

Earphones = 이어폰

Fork = 포크

Hamburger = 햄버거

Headphones = 헤드폰

Ice cream = 아이스크림

Juice = 주스

Menu = 메뉴

Orange = 오렌지

Pizza = 피자

Sandwich = 샌드위치

Stocking = 스타킹

Taxi = 택시

Wine = 와인

Konglish

Konglish words are Korean words that sound similar to an English word, but its English translation might be a little different. Let’s see some examples! 

Air conditioner = 에어컨

short for “air conditioner”

Apartment = 아파트

short for “apartment”

Bandage = 밴드

“band”

Cell phone = 핸드폰

“hand phone”

Dress (another word for it) = 원피스

“one-piece”

Electrical outlet = 컨센트

“consent” (not sure how this relates to an electrical outlet lol. Some Konglish words have nothing to do with its phonetic English counterpart.)

Free of charge = 서비스

“service”

This is used when something is on the house

Group blind date = 미팅

“meeting”

Hot chocolate (another word you could use) = 코코아

“cocoa”

Nail polish = 매니큐어

“manicure”

Overdoing / being over-dramatic = 오바

“over”

Pantyhose = 팬티스타킹

“panty stocking”

Pool (game) = 포켓볼

“pocket ball”

Promotional event = 이벤트

“event”

Used to refer to a sale

Remote control = 리모콘

short for “remote control”

Selfie = 셀카

short for “self camera” (셀프 카메라)

말고 -- Instead Of

말다 means “to not do,” so if you want to tell someone to do this instead of that, you can use ~지 말고 as a conjunction.

밤에는 전화하지 말고 그냥 문자를 보내 주세요. – At night don’t call, just send a text please. 많이 걱정하지 말고 한 번 해 봐. – Don’t worry so much and try it once. 뻥 치지 말고 빨리 이야기해라. – Don’t lie and quickly tell me. 친구들과 놀지 말고 공부만 하세요. – Don’t play with your friends and just study.

You can also use 말고 with nouns.

커피 말고 홍차 주세요. – Not coffee, please give me black tea. 가을 왔는데 딸기 말고 호박을 살게. – It’s fall now so instead of strawberries I’ll buy squash.

*NOTE: 말다 is the opposite of 하다 (to do), so do NOT use this with 이다 (to be). The opposite of 이다 is 아니다, so if you want to say “not this but that” for a ‘to be’ sentence you’d use 아니고 instead of 말고.

남자친구가 아니고 그냥 친구예요. – He’s not my boyfriend, he’s just a friend. 난 미국 사람이 아니고 캐나다 사람이야. – I’m not American, I’m Canadian.

In Korean, we don’t say “voice” or “footsteps”, we say “목소리 (mog sori)” and “발소리 (bal sori)” which roughly means “neck sound” and “foot sound” and I think that’s great honestly.
