Nick had long left Massachusetts, the demons that haunted him since Nina’s death closing in as he had been forced to face those he’d wronged by killing off the entire pack that had taken his baby sister from him. He’d been a coward and done what he always did, he ran, and he sought out anonymity in the only city he knew could provide that. The city and he had complicated relationship, and it wasn’t exactly something that would surprise most people. There were enemies in every city, and Nick’s magnified given how he had the ability to piss people off as he goes along.
His birthday though, had the vampire forgetting that he was on the run once more and he made the effort to go out into the new year celebrations. He was still arrogant enough to think that they were all out for him, and he weaved effortlessly through the club with the mindset that he wouldn’t finish the night in the bed that was currently his at his hotel. When he spotted the familiar face though he froze, watching her quietly as she made her way through the crowd before he saw her collide with someone and he automatically reached out to catch her. “Hi…” he began quietly, aware she’d hear him over the crowds. There was something different about her that much he could tell, and he felt a ghost of a smile tug at his lips. “Every party is my party sweetheart, don’t you remember? National Nicholas is a god day. The day the gift of me was born.”
Mara quirked an eyebrow when all he said was hi, her ears had hear him loud and clear as she tuned everything around them out and focused only on him. Tapping her fingers against her empty glass while she waited to see if he had any more words in him, but it was looking like she’d finally found a mute button to Nicholas. When he finally talked again though Mara let out a soft laugh, she shook her head. “Nah, I don’t remember. Nor do I celebrate that day.” She teased. Every year she had made to sure to send him a gift even though she knew better than to considering that they’d never actually made up. She’d just showed up at his door two years ago in typical Mara chaos and left him with a parting gift and a reminder that he could always contact her. As much as she held out hope that one day he’d call or text her the ring never came, the hope had eventually faded along with most of the memories from her time in Massachusetts. They were long buried away, she hadn’t intended to bring them out anytime soon. They were now just another cruel reminder of the life she’d once lead, but was now over. “Like everyone else in this club I celebrate what today actually is New Years Eve.” Sticking her tongue at him playfully, she used her glass to gesture to the people around them. “I guess my gift is going to be late this year though since you’re here. I hope you at least left a forwarding address because it was a very expensive gift.” She went to take a sip of the now empty glass, her face fell with disappointment. “Boo.” She commented, she tossed her glass to one of the guys that was passing by with a group of his friends. “Guess empty glasses signal that it’s time for me to be cut off.” She shrugged and looked towards the clock which was counting down quicker and quicker by the moment.
As the timer struck with less than five minutes on it Mara looked back at Nick. “National Nicholas day is almost over. I hope you already made your wish.” Closing her eyes at her words, she felt herself cringing. She knew it had came off awkward, but maybe that was part of her charm. “Anyways— I should get out of here.” She said, but her heels were still planted firmly on the ground. “I mean it’s not like we want to be stuck together at midnight. Been there, done that a time or two. Hell I probably still have the scars from last time.” Feeling the alcohol getting to her when she spoke the last part, she bit her bottom lip. “My bad. I didn’t mean it like that.” She apologized, she chewed on the inside of her cheek. “I should get out of here. Happy Birthday, Nick. I hope you have a wonder one.” Putting her hands on his shoulders, she stood on her top toes to lean in. Hesitating for a moment when they were close, she hated the fact that she still care when he clearly didn’t. Placing a kiss on his cheek quickly, she pulled back. Looking back at the clock once more, she knew it was past time to leave as it ticked down to the last minute. “You have about sixty seconds. Better hurry up and find someone. Nicholas Adler doesn’t seem like the type to not kiss on the New Year!” She yelled as everyone around them started to count down, she gave his arm a squeeze before moving to excuse herself from the scene.
