Jeon Somin- Running Man

My thoughts about Jeon Somin in Running Man.

Honestly, I didn’t like Somin for a long time. I’ve been a fan of Running Man since before Gary left so I was very used to the old members. When she and Sechan joined the team, I didn’t really like her, but didn’t feel too much negativity. I didn’t care much for Sechan but was usually annoyed by Somin’s desperation with men and attention-seeking. I found her desperation frustrating and the love line between her and Kwangsoo to be very artificial. She seemed to try too hard to fit in and I couldn’t vibe with her. At the same time, I felt like Jihyo wasn’t getting any screen time and whatever screen time she was getting was useless. Jihyo and Jungkook both seemed very dull and mellowed and I missed the old Running Man. However, over time I began to really enjoy this show again. I noticed that the other members were adjusting to the new ones and Jihyo and Jungkook came alive again. Gary’s departure truly broke the show and it almost got canceled. Luckily, the new members helped keep it alive. I think that’s incredibly important to remember.

Disliking a member and their actions is totally fine but it’s not okay to then go and bully the members. Hate comments are a form of cyber bullying. You have an opinion? Okay, keep it to yourself. You wanna share it? She your opinion, not your hatred. Also sharing your opinion is honestly so unnecessary. No matter what I felt about Somin or any of the other members, I never went around telling people or posting it on the Viki comments or even on this blog. I didn’t like Somin either, but the members like her and enjoy her company. They hang out with her outside of the show and they gave her so much love when she fell ill. What’s the point hating on her when your opinion does absolutely nothing? Now that Kwangsoo is gone, the producers fear adding another member because that member might face the same hate that Somin got. As international fans, we should be grateful that Running Man is still a show and it’s only because Sechan and Somin mixed so well with the existing cast and with the Korean fans.

The Somin hate is getting old and is so pointless. She’s an amazing person and plays a personality on a variety show. Who knows if that’s what she’s actually like in real life? And so what if she is? You don’t have to spend the day with her, you just have to watch a show for an hour. And even that you don’t have to do. Stop hating on people based on your assumptions about their identity and personality. Just appreciate what you have.
